Yea, unless you have dedicated tankers with you, or a full squad who's all coordinating and helping you at every turn, you're just flying against the clock in most cases. There are just so many instances where no amount of skill will help you, and you're just going to die to math at some point.
Flying right now, particularly solo, is just stupid.
If you want to fly, you better be on comms, have a well oiled squad, and pray the enemy isn't doing the same. New tanks will eat you for breakfast, and the abundance of AV means you won't be getting many kills by yourself.
If you play solo, skill tanks. They're specifically made for solo players, both kinds of tanks. I lose waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more ISK in my tanks since I'm bad, but let me tell you, it is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY less frustrating.

You can get some mileage, again, if you're in a well oiled squad, which is totally fine. But again, this is done better by the ADS, the ASSAULT craft, that brings a STRIKE team with it. Standard dropships as transport is a joke thanks to how slow they are, and how they take two people to provide anything other than spawns and scans.
Also, fitting an ADS with even one side gun, in this AV environment, is risky business at best. So, that's a 3 man crew, plus yourself. You won't be dropping much.
They need to change the name of Dropship to Gunship and be done with it, because we currently have no troop transport oriented ariel vehicles in DUST. They don't exist. Nor do they need to, because dedicated troop transport has no place in a game where the dev team is actively looking to shrink maps to increase performance.
