I don't think jumping to great heights is unrealistic given that we are super soldiers in Iron Man suits. However, we will need to closely evaluate how the ability to do so 100% of the time affects the gameplay. If the effect is overly negative (ie Myrofibs being required to be competative), we may have to tone down their effect, and leave the big building-clearing jumps to a temporary ability, ie the jump module.
I don't mind players doing incredible things, but we also don't want the game to feel cartoony, you know? Not passing judgement yet, we'll need to see how things play out, but I'm skeptical right now.

To bad we could not have planets that have different gravity so some planets everyone is jumping high and some if you dont have myo then your stuck to the ground. same with movement speed. high gravity slows everyone down.
I am not a fan of jumps but I like the change. only wish we had more control over the jumps so when I only want/need to jump a small step I dont rocket over the building, lol

I love the things. Overuse is going to settle again, once people recognize that shields are a hefty sacrifice for triple stacking Myos.
I think its absolutely vital, IF the Myos get nerfed for "seriousness" sake, they stay powerful enough to catapult a light suit high enough to at least land on a container sized elevation (you know these things that are scattered around). You can get much more mileage out of the quickly old maps with this device.
The answer to your complaint is PvE. Always.

I think I could swallow a new piece of equipment that gave us jump height, but the idea of a stim doing it just seems wrong. Maybe it's all in my head. The game was becoming increasingly serious. This is a huge breakthrough as far as I am concerned. |

Rip, after multiple games today, I will say that jumping has changed the essence of the game. I won't label it as "bad" just yet because I think it's too early. But since Ambush is now a valid game mode, I had match after match with flying Mercs jumping, and jumping, and shooting mass drivers and plasma canons and flaylocks down on my head.
One minja went from standing still to at least 30 ft. In the air in the blink of an eye. I actually was so stunned I didn't even think to pull the trigger button.
we'll see how this all plays out in the coming weeks. |

After watching the link provided in a previous post, it did not seem overly excessive to me.
It does seem like a new, less number intensive way to balance shields vs. armor however. If the movement penalty of armor plates extends to jump height (Not so much that we are back to square one, however), then shield suits can more fully embody the idea of higher mobility in a way that does not devalue armor plates by increasing the HP bonus of shield mods.
Additionally, I think that calculation for fall damage should be changed - as it unfairly punishes shield suits by taking out a larger percentage of total health on a less massive suit.

I would rather have ridiculous jumping ability to increase vertical game play. The more outlandish options we have, in my mind, the more options for going after an objective. Also this opens different options for map making. Imagine a map with multiple ways in to a single point based on your build and abilities. The more nimble players can take the high road, while the less athletic players take a more direct approach. The more jumpy players will inevitably have less tank, and the less jumpy have the option for more tank. The more options given, the more diverse the player base can become.
Make the break from EVE Rattati, and let dust develop it's own way. The two games are fundamentally different, as long as the lore it's self is able to relate between the games, the skies the limit when it comes to the mechanics. I hope some day we'll be able to use war points for more then just orbitals at some point. But for now i will have fun playing the lost levels of dust! |

Personally i don't really have any problem with them(yet), although coupled with explosive spam it's making the game pretty cheap.
Do like that it changes the map and we have to relearn what are effective ingress/egress routes. Also worth considering what's happening here in light of variable gravity: many of us want to fight on the planets in their real g, that listed in the eve database. Our myofib experiment is highly worthwhile as research towards variable g environments - one of the primary concerns raised in previous discussions was 'will variable g break the maps?' Now we can find out.
For that reason imo it's worth running this bunnyfromhell-hopping experiment for at least a month or two to give the players time to figure out what's possible and adapt.
We'll have to put aside our pride because as the OP correctly states it does make this game and it's players(as if we had any pride left) look lame as hell. As far as not being set in New Eden i lost the feeling months ago - i'm only here to help with the RMT beta testing in the hopes of contributing to something better in the future.

If the game supported Titanfall or Mirror's Edge(Hi Rouge o/, i still have all my hopes pinned on you for real quality controls/mechanics/fidelity, just a friendly reminder) controls, i'd be right there with you, buddy.
But we don't. So while i agree that the myofib experiment is worth running(for several reasons) and i'm glad we're doing it, i think that any fps player looking at what we have in DUST right now would pretty much react with raised eyebrows and a chuckle.
New Eden does have a certain set of aesthetics which i would characterize as hard scifi set in a gritty dystopian future. I'm racking my brain for what the analog of our bunny-hopping might be in EVE and i'm coming up with......nothing. There is no eve analog to the bunny-hopping masshole. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

That video does not do it justice. He was either using only 1 or 2 myos or they weren't complex. I would be ok with it if that was the extent, but to see cal scouts jump literally 30m straight up, it's for lack of a better word, silly.

Fast moving suits with mass drivers and plasma cannons and flaylocks -- quick deaths from above.
Only way I've figured out to counter (without joining them) is to stay back and pick them off at range. Not a lot of fun for me.
The game has changed greatly. Maps play completely differently with virtually no vertical barrier providing any real cover.
Overwatch positions are now loloverwatch/
Not sure I like it -- frankly it felt very much like cloaked scouts instaganking with shotguns -- but will give it some more time for things to settle down before deciding. |

The concept of adding verticality to infantry combat is good. This implementation is terrible though. I'd like to see jet packs added one day. These would be equipment and have similar stats to the cloak with a suit that has a bonus to fitting it. They could be locked by swarms and create a huge increase in your profile when activated. That would be a reasonable way to offset the power of verticality. I really hate how floaty combat in games like Destiny are. This is the wrong direction for DUST.
I would tone this WAY down, and increase the default jump height by 10% or something (maybe 20% on heavy frames).
One of the best aspects of DUST is the suits feel like they have a heft and weight to them (you feel the impact when you activate the inertial dampeners). We desperately need a mass stat and have things like jump height, run speed, and inertia on strafing programmatically derived from that.
Best PvE idea ever!

Sad. New Eden's harsh combat philosophy doesn't make CCP the kind of money they would like so they are making concessions. That's the best reason I can come up with for the implementation of jumping myofibs.

How you people are proud of making this game I'll never understand, but then again, its not my name on it.
We get it, you like other games that are actually well made, and are critically praised. That doesn't mean you should go shifting whole elements into your game because you lack originality.
I'm guessing the lack of Dust at fanfest shows what part of the CCP family the makers of Dust are.

We are talking about immortal mercenaries who spend their lives in an endless war, despite individually having enough funds to buy entire countries. Each of them could spend centuries of coke and hookers instead of getting murdered on the battlefield. This can only mean one thing: They ******* enjoy war. Why wouldn't someone take the myofibs and cross them with amphetamines to get that super-jump kick that makes you feel like you are flying?
That's not silly. That's totally sensible. It both has strategic and recreational value.
If you want to talk about silly, we can talk about the short engagement ranges in the game and the fact that you can sprint for about twenty seconds at incredibly low speeds before you run out of stamina. But then you wouldn't have a game.
Really, the superjump module sounds more like an inevitable result of the basic premise of the game, not like a random addition. And it's not like everyone can run superjump all the time. It just means that there's more viable options for the highs than shield, damage mod and EWAR now. |
