For the kind of game which Dust is, i find it terribly wrong to fight for nothing in the most played game mode (public). You are a mercenary hired by corps, but there is no impact in the game, no long term plan, none of this faction gain something on the other. In a game such Dust, which should be pretty hardcore, this defeat the purpose of the game itself. If i have to fight in public match, which lead to nothing, then i would prefer it to be totally arcade or with ludicrously high isk payout, to let even the dumbest of blueberries play with his best gear.
An elegant method to add a sense to public matches would be to add campaigns.
Random example: Mineral conflict campaign
Background
Duvolle laboratories have found a planet with some resources that they need to improve their weapons. Ishukone corporation wants the same resources to build their stuff. (Classic gal-cal hatred) With the help of some other consociates they send mercs to protect the work sites they have estabilished.
Gameplay and rules
- Game modes: all.
- Campaign last [insert time] 3 month, select one faction.
- During the campaign period all pub match are campaign match.
- Ambush = 1 win point - Skirmish and dom = 2 win point
- Faction with more points at the end of the campaign wins.
- Play 60% of the match with your selected faction and claim the final reward upon victory.
- If your squad leader have selected another faction you will play for them anyway
- Players have a little mark on their image to help identify their faction
Bonus
Duvolle laboratories Gain some warbarge components for each match won Final reward: 25x experimental AR + 25x experimental shotgun
Ishukone corporation Gain 10% more isk for each match won Final reward: 25x experimental RR + 25x experimental sniper rifles
I know this is not a perfect reason for playing pub and would not change gameplay, but background stories are important to make the game immersive. Upon reading a brief descritption of a faction, the player decide to choose one and fight for it, it can be for personal interest or because he like the idea of that faction, but he decides to follow one path and he knows he will fight for that faction to make it win when campaign ends.
In term of programming it should require an effort only upon release of the first campaign, then succesive campaigns would use the same parameters with some changes, mostly in names or rewards. Also campaign can last for long periods, so there is a lot of time to prepare the new one, when the current is over.
Please CCP consider to add this feature

Ties in with the need for PvE content, possible tiers, and maybe mooks in FW.
Considering FW is a war literally between factions, it seems like it would make more sense if the mercenary element was just of the larger war. AI-controlled Amarr face off against AI-controlled Minmatar with us fighting along-side our faction of choice.
PvE and Pubs both could have tiers set to security levels (High-sec, Low-sec, Null-sec), with restrictions on equipment in higher sec, but better rewards in lesser security areas. So, players that want to leverage better gear for better rewards could play more null-sec pub/PvE, and newer players would have a somewhat safer if less-rewarding time in High-sec space.
That sort of thing?
I dunno. Skirmish/Dom/Ambush got a bit dull variety-wise within a few months of launch.
The Dren Swarm fiasco.

It's more about bringing a layer of sense in pub matches, but i don't dislike your ideas. Currently pubs are meaningless. We can play for isk and SP, but when you have a lot of both, you don't need to grind that much to maintain a decent level. We surely play for fun, but at this point it would be even more fun to not have limits and play constantly with infinite officer gear for everybody.
If you give a meaning to pub, then you are part of a evolving story, which you don't know how it will end and you are curious about it. It's much more a mental state than an actual gameplay improvement. It's the reason why people read books, watch movies/ TV series or play videogames, we want a stories, we want to escape from reality with a good story.
Dust is lacking of them: FW is somehow designed to have a background, LP market is the advantage we get, to help a faction or the other, not a good story, but it's enough to make it addictive.
PC is the most satisfactory game mode among the others on this aspect, it's pratically a white book and CEOs of the corps/alliaces involved are writing it, war room is kinda interesting. I understand why people involved in it don't want CCP to change it.
PUB is nothing, you play it to chill with friends, but at this point is poorly designed because we can't play it and chilling because isk.

I would like to see more content as well, I just don't think we will see anything to that extent implemented in this game. At most I think we can expect more superficial changes and not much more. I'll take what we get, still feels like I'm on a death watch though and the patient is getting weaker every day....
Hello? any one there?

Maybe we can just put this kind of campaign in the special contracts or FW tab of battle finder instead of the public battles tab. But I can see why you want it there though. |

ACTUALLY, DUST 514 has a campaign storyline. As when the game was originally conceived, you were supposed to be a female Gallente Merc making her way through New Eden. The project was turned into an online FPS instead.
Pubs are those pesky things that we need to get our SP.

That was just an advertiser... don't give too much about those from CCP!

Wow, this idea of yours is really great, I like it a lot. Giving more story and meaning to Dust ia what I have been waiting for for ages.
To add my two ISK to the topic, if CCP added something like a medal board or box / humidor in the MQ where you can view your achievements, not just a cheap neocon entry, a real box with medals in it; once you inspect them, you can read a little story to each of them. I'd like that.
Getting medals for FW rank achievements, for kill streak records, for events such as Mordu's Trials or defending Caldari Prime. This would give players some sense of achievement besides lifetime skillpoints accrual. |

This idea of yours is way too fun and good to be thought of by CCP. Put this in feedback, demand it's voice to be heard!
I'd rather look bad winning, than look good losing.

Epic storylines would probably be pretty popular and a good way to guide players. The game should start with you agreeing to kill yourself for the mind transfer and then entering a training field to get use to your new body. I think ironwolf saber did a storyline doc that was pretty good.
If there was a campaign I'd like it to play like armor core.

Missions like taking over an arms fort hm.
... Better see nineball... Make these people understand true difficulty...
Especially when he "commences hostilities." *shudder*
Asss for epic story, just make some serious quotes/scripts.
Look at J from AC: Verdict Day... "My life belongs to the battlefield; to live as I please, and die a senseless death" (tries to kill you because you're "going to stop the war" )
Or someone as sad as Joshua from AC: 4 "hey... I guess there's little need for words." (friend turned foe)
Or that dreaded mission from AC: 4 answer. "you're actions were clearly deliberate, there's no point in trying to reason with you." (player killed 100 million people in the mission before this)
Or the last mission in AC: Master of Arena (nineball) "those who wield too much power; those who bring chaos, they are simply not part of the program"
Or epic missions like marche au supplice from AC:4
Things like that, take it as an example
Entering the void and becoming wind.
