But we complained about hit detection for nearly a year solid... Instead of fixing the Core Mechanic and issue to helping DUST be a success they just slapped an Aim assist band-aid over it...
Then started a big forum propaganda train about how every FPS has aim assist... Even though a big chunk of the DUST community came from MAG, Soccom and CS:GO which had no aim assist... DUST 514 actually HAD aim assist, yes even back in chromo. It was actually removed during Uprising 1.0, and everyone and their mother complained about the aiming.
Nah the same Aim assist was present in Uprising launch.. I Spent alot of time dueling people in corp battles in Chromosome and then in No show PC's on Uprising launch....
Dust's slight aim assist in Chromo and Uprising was commented on and enjoyed by the general community.... CCP Tried to implement a very strong aim assist Twice in Beta;s.... To have the community collective flip **** about it. And they remove it.
So CCP Removed Magnetic aim assist.
The Aim assist of old was more LDS snaps... Allowing a playing to LDS and have the camera transition as you look to your sights/scope center more on the target your close to...
LDS snaps is one of the most widely accepted Aim assist features for a FPS... as it allows DS3 users to already be somewhat close to target when fine aiming with LDS.... Giving them a competitive chance .... Even new players enjoyed this iteration of DUST's aim assist.
But DUST through these times never had a magnetic aim assist... Or a Hit detection buff forcing you to use it or be at a disadvantage...
What Made the Launch of Uprising so terrible for Hitting stuff? CCP Wolfman Overhauled the entire Aim system and Hit detection system.... Because he said at the time the old system was causing us to loose 1-2 FPS....
First thing DS3 users noticed? Infinite joystick acceleration causing inconsistent input... Basically when you move your joystick maxed to one side... The aim get's faster and faster ...
This created a massive problem for Mouse users aswell as the same mvoement with the mouse yielded completely different input results...
They then gave a blanket Damage buff to everything by 10% to make up for the terrible hit detection..... You could have your aim perfect and would still be missing... When you could actually get it there.. As the Crosshairs turning "Red" Was extremely delayed and laggy...
We spent 1.2 and 1.3 fixing aiming controls and they started getting better around 1.3...... Remember CCP Wolfman changed the aiming system from Chromosome which was widely enjoyed by their customer base... Then we spent Uprising 1.0,1.1,1.2,1.3 trying to fix it...
During this time CCP shanghai's Executive Producer quit.... Leaving the DUST team without a boss and free reign to develop whatever they felt like in their internal teams...
1.4-1.6 DUST had dark times with terrible update after terrible Update... Emptying out their player base they gained back from the Terrible Uprising launch....
Then CCP Rouge came into picture....
I Know my DUST history... I lived it.... making passionate Forum posts warning CCP all along the way... |

Cat Merc wrote: You don't know your DUST history. There was no aim assist back in Uprising, CCP commented on the fact saying that they "Wanted to rework it before implementing it again". Uprising's aiming was complained about NON STOP until aim assist appeared, every 5th thread was complaining about how ****** the aiming was, I have no idea how you missed that.
You are right, DUST never had magnetic aim assist, but that doesn't mean magnetic aim assist isn't used in other shooters. COD, BF, Borderlands, Halo, Destiny, Crysis, etc', all have magnetic aim assist, all stronger than DUST's. DUST had aim adhesion, slowing down your aiming once you are on target.
Wolfman overhauled the aiming because even before Uprising people complained about bad aim mechanics, just that we got so used to it we stopped caring, and yes he did a **** poor job at it.
The 10% damage buff happened to compensate for the damage bonus from Weaponry no longer existing. If you look back, you'll see them removing the 2% per level Weaponry damage bonus from the skill, because they felt like it was a pointless thing to have a skill if everyone brought it to level 5 as one of the first things you do. (Don't agree with it, but whatever) People complained that weapons feel too weak now, CCP tracked the cause to be the Weaponry damage bonus removal, and added a blanket 10% damage buff to all weapons.
After that you are correct, they spent dev time trying to refine Wolfman's system, and we are where we are right now. The aiming is still substandard, and would be frustrating as all hell to a lot of people without aim assist. Note: I am not one of them, I did fine before aim assist and I would do fine after it's gone. My K/D actually dropped after aim assist was released, because people could actually *ghasp* hit me now.
There was in the beginning of Uprising... I Spent to much time dueling at that time to know.... certain aspects where even present on the Mouse... Hell, I won a bunch of duels using LDS snaps during PC time.... So meh....
We always had aim adhesion... At the start with the Joystick acceleration and aim adhesion tweaking it almost felt like it repelled your aim off target.. Which there was several posts made.... with dev response even.
What Uprising 1.4 brought was Magnetic Aim assist.. And a massive hit detection "Grace zone"
Read Reviews from back in Chromosome of DUST.... Most of the complaints were, the system felt "Clunky" and slow... No customization on controls... Maxed out sensitivity and it still felt wrong... Much Change in a few years?
Biggest thing the community cried about? Rotation caps... So Heavies back in Chromosome could only turn at a max out speed... no matter how high sensitivity was... How much you moved your Joystick or Mouse... These where even present on Assault suits as some found out..
This was CCP's balancing idea for classes. And limiting control ability like that in a console is brutal... It's a neat concept having movement acceleration and deceleration like they did... Combined with the camera speed caps... But it went over terribly with everyone...
Including the physical health of some peoples wrists...
The games you quoted with magnetic aim assist all have one thing in common... Their ttk is crazy low.....
But again their Magnetic Aim assist is stronger but also more polished... It does the basic work....And leaves the fine work to the user... Dust leaves the basic work to the user and does the fine work for you.
And yup your right about the 10% removal, I have even made the point in posts years ago... And didn't agree with the skill removal as it was a skill that actually felt rewarding getting as a new player and was a worth while skill sink... Instead of the skill we have now which has 2 levels that just do nothing...
But the main complaint around the issue wasn't the TTK, it was the crappy Aiming... adhesion tweaks and joystick acceleration curves that made it near impossible to consistently aim at a target... Almost slipping off on purpose.
Love it or hate it... The Aiming system is here to stay...For better or for worse(Like damn...)... Ir works decent i guess lol? Hit detection consistency is still a massive problem...
But in the End, game performance has been more of the problem with DUST.... Even watching recent You-tube vids and watching the frame rate dips and them struggle to aim because it is terrible.
But I might aswell have posted your GIF of beating a dead horse as Aeon has pointed out :( |
