What about fixing the real issues once and for all? Adding content is a great thing, and I'm pretty excited about it. But what is the point of all this new content, if IG, things are still the same?
Hit detection MUST be fixed. It is the most important "aspect" of an FPS, and it doesn't work properly (not at all indeed). It's not only about lags, even when then game runs well the hit detection is terrible. And some weapons are worse than others..
The weapons that are the most impacted by this issue are the explosive ones. PLC, MD, Flaylock, grenades.. How many times was I supposed to kill my target with a grenade or a flaylock shot, and it dealt absolutely nothing? I can't tell..
The balance between the main rifles is quite good now, it was a tough job. It's time to focus on the real issues, and bring Hit detection to Critical lvl on your trello board.

You say that as if it's even fixable. Don't you think that if it were simple as that, they would have fixed it already? I'm sure they would if they could. Creating new content is much, much harder than altering a few lines of code.
More than likely, the performance issues are a result of the poorly coded foundation. If that's the case, then there's nothing that can be done but press on.

More than likely, the performance issues are a result of the poorly coded foundation. If that's the case, then there's nothing that can be done but press on. I think that it requires quite some work to fix it, and that it's not only a lag issue. Explosives work 40% of the time since they had the damage falloff (REs dont have this issue, or way less). The problem I see is that it's not a fix/update they can monetize so they are not doing it. I may be wrong, but then I'd like to know the reason why, on a FPS, the broke hit detection everybody's complaining about is stil not fixed.
Honestly, I dont care about new content. Not that I think that they are bad (not at all -except strongboxes-) but I'd rather have this issue fixed than new suits/maps/weapons/whatever.

Complete nonsense. And CCP has been working on hit detection here and there since forever. Nobody is ever satisfied with it, and everyone has a different opinion on it, except everyone agrees that it is bad.
Also, note that last time a major hit detection change was made, it broke all of the game balance, which is roughly based on how effective different types of weapons are in the current balance. Changing hit detection would actually make gameplay worse even if hit detection was better. And then we'd have to balance everything again.
(So realistically, consider that if you miss a hit, your gun is already balanced on the assumption you would miss some hits.)
Sequal's Back wrote:Honestly, I dont care about new content. Not that I think that they are bad (not at all -except strongboxes-) but I'd rather have this issue fixed than new suits/maps/weapons/whatever.
It's also completely different developer skill sets to create items, create maps, add new menus and options in the UI, and change FPS mechanics in games. There is not any way to trade doing X for Y in the manner you seem to be suggesting, as often different developers specialize in different aspects of the product.

This makes total sense to me as what I saw from the last 2 patches were mostly cashgrab. They may have be working on it, but they never finished the job.
Soraya Xel wrote: Also, note that last time a major hit detection change was made, it broke all of the game balance, which is roughly based on how effective different types of weapons are in the current balance. No offense, but what you call a "major hit detection change" was when Aim Assist was added to the game. It wasn't a hit detection fix at all. It was made to hide the broken hit detection, but didn't change the hit detection itself!
Soraya Xel wrote:(So realistically, consider that if you miss a hit, your gun is already balanced on the assumption you would miss some hits.) This is the worst way to deal with this. A balance can't exist if there's a huge random factor on it. If a rebalance has to be made after the hit detection get fixed, then there will be one. But at least we will NOT have to pray that our guns work properly just before engaging (damn the flaylock/plc are so frustrating because of this). We should be able to rely on our weapon, not "considering that missing is normal because hit detection sucks".

But it's the choice of the company to chose if they'll pay for new content or fixing the actual one.

People will still complain regardless if CCP fixes all the issues. There are people who rather have more content over fixing old issues because they are bored with what they got. I agree. But don't expect a major fix and a major update anytime soon at once. CCP just doesn't have the team big enough for that as they are mostly focused on Project Legion and Eve: Valkyrie.

Stay gold, DUST bugs. As I said, if a balance is done with a working hit detection, there are no reasons that fixing it would make things worse^^
I understand that they dont have huge teams, and that they have to work on different games. But they could at least write somewhere that they are a little bit concerned about this issue.

I can't tell if this comment is for real or not...
On topic though, hit detection has barely changed since closed beta. In fact I'd go so far as to say closed beta played better than the current build, at least immediately prior to open beta. |

In open beta, there weren't all the weapons we have now. AR, HMG and SMG have a pretty good hit detection. That's probably why you think hit detection was better before ^^
Then, when they added new weapons, they didn't adapt hit detection on every one of them, such as IoP (they partially fixed it after a while), all explosives weapons, shotgun (the Bon's shotgun shows that it's not a lag issue so perfectly!) and some others..

For those of you who do not do game development or understand the business behind it needs to understand that fixing a bug is by far no means as cheap as producing new content.
This is generally referred to technical debt; CCP has had a bad history with it with long standing issues. Case in point POS Starbase code is so archaic and unnatural that there is not a developer within the company currently willing to touch it with a 40 foot pole. Last time it was touched in a QA environment it launched titans into uncontrollable light speed that landed right on the bubble making it impossible for the pilot to ever regain control of the ship within a reasonable time (a lifetime). Because the Star base code responsible for that bug is a mystery they never attempted to touch it again and reverted the changes. Its getting to the point they're going the chernobyl option (bury it) and hope nothing ugly ever arises from its grave.
To single out CCP would be unfair to I'll point to another game company that has a massive issue with its technical Debt. Digital Extremes and their free to play MMO game Warframe. The problem here? Bugs DON'T STAY fixed. Warframe sadly reeks of quickly done fixes as easily done as the OP suggests to be done; yet ever patch a immense number of bugs return and return frequently. DE only fixes the symptoms and rarely the cause of them. My favorite one that still pops up every other month is the ancient retribution bug. Oh how many a player tried to claim that prize only to find out its a fake power card designed to test the text length on cards in testing environments never designed for live play.
As to how this applies to Dust 514 there are a few things to consider. 1. We constantly need new players. 2. We are a flux income based game; how well it either attracts new customers; retains customers; or get recurring customers is a critical component to keeping the lights on. A nature similar to all Free to play games. 3. Thirdly we have limited resources and experience. CCP Rattati and his team are not the avengers; they cannot save the world in one afternoon. Even with community help reducing development and redevelopment costs (reducing rework) its not enough to justify buying new experience every month. I would kill million mercenaries if it meant we got a new model/technical artist, new netcode engineer, and engine expert and maybe a sound guy as well.
New content brings new players in; keeps semi interested folks in longer. Bugs fixes keeps veterans players in.
A balanced approach is best to this; forsaking one for the other is not healthy and so far the development team for dust 514 is expressing both approaches as evenly as they can afford.

Hit detection was actually a bit better when we had stronger aim assist. Well, at least it felt better for controller users. That's why I think it's not hit detection itself, but it's us missing our shots most of the times. Any other game I've ever played has both bullet magnetism (Halo, MAG, Battlefield, plenty of videos showing how it works) and aim magnetism/friction.
Either way, it's not entirely because it's generally a bit harder to aim with a controller, it's actually a game design choice in order to compensate from 10 to 30 ms of lag (actually the compensation time also depends on many other things). In fact, almost all recent PC FPS has bullet magnetism (but no aim friction and/or no aim magnetism for obvious reasons).

On many weapons the hit detection is terrible, but not all of them. Take the AR for example, sometimes hits are not all registered but it's not a real problem as it has a quite good rof, same for the ACR and most rifles.
The problem is mostly with slow rof weapons where each shot matters and explosives ones as the explosion is random as fu*k. The hit detection is different between weapons which shows that it's not a lag issue.
IWS: fixing hit detection on weapons in a fps is both for new players AND veterans. It's so obvious I can't understand why you keep arguing against that. When there are important bugs in a game, you dont release new content over these bugs to make the community "forget" about them, you fix them.
