I was wondering if Dust University or some other training corp was out there. Thinking of helping new players out. The game needs it

What do you mean? I have gotten bored and figured that making a new beginner corp would be nice if the ones of old are all dead. Guide some people in the right direction, and to encourage them to keep the game at least installed on their ps3 after they get stomped a couple times

I saw a few of them around, but I pretty much see the same people every 20 matches or so. If it were up to be, I'd say the playerbase consists of around 2k players, most of which are corp-less.
That said, I STILL DO SEE some of them. I've also seen other training corps try to start out and fail, so best of luck and don't get your hopes up if you try and make your own. |

So i was checking out the 'NPE' with an alt and notice that with kills my rank was still showing up as a major, however most players were showing up as recruits. I feel like people are testing the game but not continuing on once they join the masses of us who have been playing for a while

The 2k figure is how many they are on at any given moment (updated every 15 minutes if I recall).
I'm only speaking for myself when I state the following.
Anyways, we're still around but we're not that active as we use to be when it comes to holding lectures and stuff like that. The current recruiting tools we have are too limited (only chat channels, forums, and mail). The recruiter reward system as seen here needs to be overhauled for better flexibility, better progress tracking, and have better integration with the PlayStation Network so we can get more players to join the game. The NPE needs to be overhauled as well to encourage new players to grind 100,000 WPs each for this to work. Until we have all of these in place, the Ivy League and the Learning Coalition are not likely to be 100% effective for a long time.
Another problem we have is what happened during Fanfest 2014 when the Dust 514 Keynote went Live with only news about Project Legion which gave people the impression that Dust is dead. As a result, the motivation to continue the lectures at D-UNI greatly diminished in the span of less than half an hour that day. Since then, classes were less frequent and eventually we kind of fell silent.
But we are not really dead as a corp.
We still have players joining D-UNI on a regular basis which is about 21 new members a week -- some are returning from a long break and then having to rejoin the corp after being booted every month for inactivity. Dennie Fleetfoot (aka Kevall Longstride, aka one of our CPMs) is still actively keeping tabs on who's been logging in within the past 30 days, hands out written guides as mail to the new recruits, etc. The monthly culling of inactive characters in our corp is meant to help CCP get a better idea on how player retention is going for Dust.
Also, now that we're seeing a massive jump in progress for Dust in terms of actual updates and a brand new release featuring personal warbarges, it seem I might actually decide to come back to giving more lectures. And since now I have cross trained into a lot of things outside my Nova Knifing profession, I might be able to teach more in my lectures. But I'll have to wait until the "Next Release" comes next month.

On the occasions that I have made a new character, I go and check out the academy to see what's going on. You see a lot of the new players having fun, figuring out the game doing silly stuff. I try and aid them with ammo, logistics repping etc...
Clearly people play and enjoy the game as noobs while they are competing at their basic level, so I can only assume when they leave the academy and start getting hammered by ravaging proto squads they quit, thinking that there is no chance for them.
Would it be possible to gather more noobs by keeping the academy running longer, give them slow progression out of the academy somehow instead of throwing them in at the deep end after a day or two?
People like to say "oh well when I started back in beta, back in 1.0 etc.. it was just as hard blah blah". Honestly that's not entirely true. Yes of course you would run into good squads and proto gear back then but it was much more few and far between as it is now. I just think if you want new players to stick around and get involved in DUST, they need a better and longer transition from the academy.

I agree with this. I remember when back in closed beta it was pretty brutal for a new player but that doesn't mean we should force new players today to experience that kind of hell. Eve Online had the same problem (it eventually got addressed). Some say respecs help, but that clearly didn't solve the problem. The NPE still sucks.
There have been many recommendations on how to make NPE better. We just need to start implementing them.

No problem.
Right now, I feel that the Ivy League and the Learning Coalition should cooperate in getting CCP to improve the NPE and help enhance third-party recruiting tools if we want to be truly effective as an alliance/coalition that teaches new players.

Hello there!
Dust University is still around. To say it's "active"... you'd have to define a little more specific standards.
For instance, I switched at a time where Kevall was in the middle of a vacation. Until he came back, it seems like the corp does not have that many members...
However, he came back and I was sent a ton of mail with very detailed information. If anyone is helping with Player Retention, it's Kevall Longstride / Dennie Fleetfoot. The amount of information and the extremely well laid-out formats, it enough to show the player the full extent of the game.
Playing in their corp for the past week has made me realize many of the Dust University members are casual members. You may see a couple log in once or twice a week. Some only log in for a couple matches. Are they active? Yes, but not as much as other "Active Corps" which have tons of members playing 20 to 40+ hours a week.
Furthermore, many leave Dust University. And that's great! Graduating from Dust Uni and gravitate to another corp (or venture forth and make their own!) means Dust Uni has done its job.
I can't speak for Immortal Guides, but Fox Gaiden's EVE toon is on 24/7 to monitor and record the chats. His Learning Coalition chat, which is by far the most successful "Dust Help" channel that possibly rivals EVE's "Help" channels, is one of the channels I'm constantly apart of, consistently helping out player with questions about the game and the game's future, and offering them facts about the game, information from Blue Tag posts on the forums, and my personal opinions on gameplay.
I would imagine Immortal Guides is a little more "active" than Dust Uni, but I believe Immortal Guides players are on a little more, while the Dust Uni players are more casual than the Immortal Guides players. However, I'm making a big assumption here as I haven't met too many players in Immortal Guides, other than Fox.
Great to see another fellow mercenary willing to help new players! Join us in the Learning Coalition and see whether you want to join Dust Uni or Immortal.
See you in the channels and on the battlefield! o7

Its been a week or so since i have been on the forums so i am not sure how fresh this is in peoples minds. I am definitely in this game for the long run, and its future instances. Never have I played a game where I feel a kill means something other than your KDR. I really want other people to get that enjoyment out of the game.
