I think battles on the ships are natural. We see a lot of them in Star wars, Battlestar galactica, etc. But ships belong to pilots. I shall be mad if someone eject me from my battlecruiser as I flying around :)
So it must be a dedicated rule about boarding ships. For me personaly it should be available only for capital and supercapital class ships. They are big enough to have space for 16vs16 or more. Of course it shall need another battle mode because present skirmish/ambush mode is not ok for it.
But how we can board a spaceship? I still don't have a good idea enough to share it here. But with sure I can say It shouldn't be easy, but also shouldn't be impossible. In future of course.
Boarding towers. In present days the only way to take active tower from its owner is to destroy it and put your own tower. Here comes the second opportunity.
Let me explain for pure dusters how towers blowing works. First you must get fleet and start shooting the tower. Once the tower shield fall below 25%, the tower go in reinforce mode. In that mode tower is invulnerable for ships. When the reinforcement timer ends you can shoot it again and destroy it Here comes the role of mercenaries. Let say the reinforcement mode last 1d and 17 hours. Time enough battles to be arranged. Imagine the tower have 5 or 10 or other number vulnerable points. For every one of them we can expect dedicated fight. For example one for the CPU core, one for the fuel bays, one for the weapon management (it mean even the tower guns are online they may be unusable/hacked) , one for the tower shield control and other critical points CCP can implement.
The battles itself can be magnificent. Imagine a battles with low to zero gravity (I had play some in old Unreal 2 many years ago and it was pure fun), no LAV and HAV but dropship available, why not some special designed vehicles for low/zero gravity. Battles not only in the tower but on it surface too. If gravity is missing, there is no up and down, it can be so delusive for everyone, boarding hook if you start float uncontrollable and reactive backpack with limited fuel( something like that ), different behavior on some weapons(mass drivers, granades), and a lot more the environment can offer.
The final idea is that the attackers can take control after 10 or more different fights over the tower, or the defender can return control without need of shield repairing, again after winning 10 or more battles.
I am sure there will be a lot yes or no about my idea, and I know that there are 7 more types of planets waiting for its battlefields designs. But we have all the time ahead, and I shall be glad to see something like that in future.
