I am thinking of making my first purchase with IRL money in Dust - the mercenary pack, but with the talk about legion and Dust going off I am unable to decide, because I don't have a PC and I won't be able to play Legion wen it comes out, so my money would be led to waste. P.S. Can someone tell me when exatly are they shutting Dust, if they ever do that.

I think it is, if there is a pack you really want, but don't have yet. Supporting the current team in their efforts is pretty neat. It's what made me waste my first dollar on this game, to be honest.
Now, if you have everything you could possibly want, and you're not in the need for more boosters, then no. |

Is it worth spending money on DUST?
Right now yes.
Well with active development plans for the next year... Money spent with what is gained in entertainment value is worth it.
But if you look at the pricing models in DUST in general it is only worth it to a point.
Stuff is crazy expensive in DUST. You can spend 100 bux quick in this game for very limited gain.
Where that same 100 bux would get you 3 amazing games and the years of development that went with it off PSN...
If you do buy something in DUST... make sure you do atleast an hour of research on it..

I recently bought the merc pack. Happy that I did, using the aur to buy boosters has massively increased my skill progression. I reckon there's more than enough life in the game to justify it. I'd probably quite happily pay a similar amount of IRL money on another game that I might play for a couple weeks or a month. There's considerably more than that left in Dust, and I'll play it more. |

First thing is first, it turned out that CCP was not going to kill Dust. In fact, we haven't seen anything posted by the Devs regarding Project Legion for a long time now. In fact, that section of the forums is looking as dead as Doc Holliday in Tombstone. In the meantime, CCP Rattati, ever since he took over development of Dust immediately after Fanfest 2014, has helped Dust rebuild some confidence in the community.
But that is not to say that everything in Dust is worth spending money on. Some things are worth spending money on like Boosters, Merc Packs (especially the $100 ones), Jara Kumora (only if you want to decorate your merc quarters -- her sellback boost is not much), and BPOs (don't buy the APEX ones if you're willing to grind Faction Warfare). If Simple Trading gets introduced in the 1.1 update of the Next Release (supposedly coming in March 2015), buying the AUR consumables like dropsuits, weapons, and modules, would be a great way to make ISK from other players in the secondary market when it happens.
However...
I highly suggest that you do NOT buy any of the AUR Keys. They are absolutely useless, are chance based in regards to which box gets opened, and most of the time those keys unlock boxes filled with crap that is not even worth a unit of Tritanium. Again, don't buy the APEX suits if you're willing to grind Faction Warfare and earn them for free. But if you don't have the patience, go ahead and buy them.

I just spent 50$ on the war profiteer pack. The 3 apex suits and lav bpo really served me well so far. (car-remotes are fun) Only gripe, the aurum amount is way too low, I'd rather ditch the jara kumora for more aur :o Hopefully we can sell jara kumora to other players eventually.
If you enjoy the game, consider spending some money - dust can only keep on going if someone pays for the -free- in free to play for others. If they changed the aurum bar to increase the moment you buy aurum I'd probably get another pack. *wallet cries* |

Spending money on DUST 514 ensures the continual development of DUST 514. If the company (CCP) is steadily making a profit from a service or game (EVE/DUST514) then you can bet they will not want to stray from that project to start another one in the hopes of that project being more successful i.e. Project Legion
So in conclusion if you would like to see DUST 514 go on living for 5 - 10 more years then you should probably support the development of the game! if not then we all will need to shell out over a grand for a new PC and all of us should be ready to start paying a subscription.

YOU wouldn't need to buy the merc pack in that case. But the merc pack, just like PLEX in Eve Online, will need to be purchased first from CCP before it is then injected into the secondary market by the player for selling.

If you will have fun with it and the money is not completely necessary, yes.
People will spend 50 dollars for a good dinner and a movie with friends. If you will get the same amount of enjoyment out of your purchase it is the same thing; 50 dollars for some fun. If you have the expectation that spending that money will get you 'sexual intercourse' in regards to DUST you are probably being too hopeful.
Frankly, I would expect nothing to transfer over the Legion. If you have that in mind, are you still willing to buy the items? Pessimistically, "Legion has been quite for so long and the team wants to get a whole bunch of new EVE players into Legion that there is no way that they are going to let us keep 40 million SP and millions of ISK. At the best, you are keeping your name, BPO's as skins, and maybe your Loyalty Rank."
DUST has to be shut off at some point, like all games really. Sony is only going to support the PS3 for so long and IF Legion comes out and there is ANY kind of transfer, I highly doubt that CCP will continue to work on DUST.

If DUST is making money then why even continue development on a game (Legion) that may never see the light of day? Thats a waste of good resources!
Personally I am a console player, I have always been a console player and i will always be a console player, so i keep the faith that as long as you all and myself help support the game we will NEVER have to see Legion!! Because I would probably hate the game anyways on a PC.

Whether or not Legion comes out is something that I feel has little bearing on whether DUST is still around in 18 months. Was only using Legion as an example.
Hope that DUST stays around either way, whether it be 'Legion' or DUST.

The only drawback I see would be spending real money only to find out that your purchase has been nerfed into oblivion or the game has changed in some way that makes your purchase virtually worthless. At this point, I would still focus on what I could get for free. This game is old tech and the community is not growing or gathering a following. IMO, money better spent elsewhere, buddy.
Besides, CCP never improves the performance of their servers and we're still seeing a lot of lag. I honestly haven't witnessed any evidence of their trying to improve the technical aspects of the game. Still glitches galore. This game is such a headache and an embarrassment. |

I wouldn't respec unless I had all my core skills maxed out and at least two full protos, otherwise you might paint yourself into a corner that you have to buy another respec token to get out of.
I respec'd with all my cores maxed out, 5 proto suits, weapons, gear, and still managed to wish I had done it slightly differently. So I can only imagine if I had far less SP and tried to do trade one proto for another. Nope, too scary for me.
I'm assuming you're newish, since I've not seen you around, or newish to our corp, either way, glad you're on board.

Just do not buy a respec and do not buy decryptor keys.
Chances are whatever you want to respec into can be gained with a few boosters and a good week of grinding and then you will have your current setup plus the new one.
BPOs are great but not as great as you may think so take this purchase with caution, suits change and could leave you regretting the purchase at some point. My rule on Dust purchases is to spend what I can enjoy before the next update.
Boosters are worth it even if you are just saving the SP.
The bundle packs when on sale will make you a pretty good amount of ISK depending on how much you die. |

DUST is in no danger of being shut down, because the first thing they'd do was announce the cancellation of the planned development cycles to save money. That will come long before we see the servers given a headshot.

Dust will likely remain active while Legion is in Beta, and Legion won't even be in Beta for a while yet. Even after Legion is released, DUST may continue for a while if it still has enough of a player base to pay for itself.
Of course at some point, probably in a year or two, people will stop spending money on DUST because they think it will soon shut down, and then DUST will soon shut down because no one is spending money on it.

Support the game and it will continue existing. CCP will not shut off the servers if they are making money.
The fact that there is a roadmap and planned future releases seemingly indicates that the game will be around for a while yet. |

One of the things that I gained when I achieved "Worst Player in DUST514 ever" status was the complete quelling of the urge to financially support a game in which I am exclusively cannon fodder.
This is a prototype-level sig. I worked hard for it, and I'm going to use it every time. So, just get used to it.

Maybe that's why you suck don't tell me you have never heard of PAY TO WIN! You don't want to be cannon fodder maybe purchase a little something that will give you a better edge against your opponent.

You know, you might be right... What should I purchase to add to the 5,200,000 Unused SP I currently have for my full-5-cored character? In other words, this side of purchasing CCP outright and changing the code in my personal favor, very little would alter my sucking.

I'd wait till a point with more concrete plans where they lay out exactly how importing into Legion will go, if there'll be a Legion, if Dust is now a "revived" thing (since it was killed), and if/when Dust/Legion will be displayed at Fanfest as a proper part of the EVE universe.
Right now, it feels kinda like we've picked up a formal agreement for Friends-With-Benefits post break-up with an ex and no real way of knowing when the rug might get pulled out from under us.

Personally I am a console player, I have always been a console player and i will always be a console player, so i keep the faith that as long as you all and myself help support the game we will NEVER have to see Legion!! Because I would probably hate the game anyways on a PC. Wasn't making a statement about DUST. I was only giving the pessimistic possibility of DUST disappearing in short order. Whether or not Legion comes out is something that I feel has little bearing on whether DUST is still around in 18 months. Was only using Legion as an example. Hope that DUST stays around either way, whether it be 'Legion' or DUST.
Even if Legion did come out... Would you just end DUST if you where the CEO of CCP? with a declining revenue portfolio and this being the only product that you have that actually shows revenue growth?
If CCP Does Launch Legion next year. Would they want to port it ever to PS4? Could you really ever combine PC and PS4 populations?
How could you develop for PC and have the luxury to update user clients instantaneously then have to go through a few day 3rd party process to update console user clients.? (PSN)
After spending, some say millions, launching a product on console and making headway would you just throw that investment away? Again if you where the CEO of CCP...
I Don't see it making sense for CCP to get rid of DUST or shut it down.... I See it being around for a atleast a year or two... and possibly if there is enough of a market... Ported to the PS4.

Get the Merc pack, and use some of the aur to get the mlt shield extender BPO, the mlt armor plate BPO, and you can easily get a suit that costs less than ~1200 ISK, with over 600 ehp |

You make a lot of sensible statements, but when I think of "logic" or being "reasonable" I don't really think of the CEO of CCP.
