It wasn't just a magazine staff hit. They shot a woman in the street merely because they found a cartoon offensive. But when the French found the two responsible, two more people working with them took hostages which resulted in the death of a french policewoman.

A couple years ago, some cartoons that "offended Islam" were published, originally in Denmark Caused big stink, riots, people died Charlie Hebdo is a French mag that has republished the cartoons. Employees, cartoonists, have been threatened. This week, two terrorists raided Charlie Hebdo to impose Islamic blasphemy laws, ie death penalty 12 deaths at Hebdo, more at related incidents "Je suis Charlie" = "I am Charlie" is a slogan adopted by millions to express solidarity with victims and say that we will not be cowed by terrorism into giving up fundamental right of freedom of expression. OP is expressing that solidarity. To emphasise, stated aim of attack is essentially a challenge to basic human right of freedom of expression |

Its the worst terrorist attack in France since the 1960s.

Context is important. The reason no one takes that dictator seriously is context. Remember the Cold War? For decades the USA and the USSR tried to outdo eachother with launch vehicles and detection and anti missile defenses, ect. North Korea doesn't even have a stable launch vehicle. How are they going to go have a nuclear war with a country thats been preparing for one for 50 years when their bomb cant even fly? The bomb is real but the credibility of their threat to use it is not.
As for those terrorists, if im not mistaken, we are actually bombing them as we speak.
I dont think the French response to this has been disproportionate. They had their manhunt, they had their day of mourning. They haven't interned anybody or declared war on anybody. They just raised their level of security alertness. Which makes sense when you consider 3 national police officers were targeted and killed during the rampage. |

They attacked the very heart of freedom. This slogan is a way to show that they may have try to kill our freedom by killing Charlie hebdo. If it's about freedom of speech, which I don't necessarily think the focus should be on, then that I suppose is fine but let's be clear. You cannot attack freedom of speech. There is no manner in which to do so and you certainly cannot attack it through violence.
Let's not get on the moral high horse about "Our Freedom!" please let's just not it's too vast a discussion to have.
The one and only thing I dislike in your post above are the emotive buzzwords you use..... almost sounds like propaganda.

And yes I do know the background on Charlie Hebdo. News coverage of the incident has been very detailed. Regardless there's no point in arguing about it.

Outside of the USA, there's no such thing as freedom of speech in the west.

Hmmm. Sorry but I am not one for Hashtags and social media generated trends. I can appreciated what the Hashtag means and the sentiments it is generating around the world.
That is of course not to say that I don't sympathise with the staff's losses or the hardships they now face or understand why the people of the world are all standing up to celebrate the ideals of freedom of expression however I do so in my own way. I don't believe adding my digital tag to a public message board is indicative of that.
The second quote..... more an error on my part in terms of how I communicated the idea. I do not mean to infer that those of are joining in with the #JesuisCharlie movement are "pretending such" only that I myself could never hope to imagine such an awful situation.
Sorry if I don't hold up democratic ideals as the very centre of my universe.

It's hard to embrace democracy sometimes, the modern world still riddled with flaws
It's probably wrong for me to bash ppl who aren't on the exact same page
I hate being such a flawed human sometimes
Edit: that's me saying sorry, I get carried away
Further edit: it was most likely wrong for me to make the thread to begin with
What doe ls it even accomplish... Really Middas...? Really...?!

Not at all.
It's just a cultural difference. I mean the people I know personally, myself included, are incredibly liberal in that way we think. That's just the way New Zealand is. It's cool to be what religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc that you want to be/are and we'll support you in that as well.
I'm just not a huge social media follower...... barely even use Facebook.
