I'm not going to take up the slogan and pretend like I understand the horrors these people went through but I certainly have to give those surviving staff at Charlie Hebdo a great deal of respect for refusing to be cowed by the violence initiated against them.
The French are not the type to let things like this keep them down for long.

The French are not the type to let things like this keep them down for long. It's not especially about charlie hebdo, it's about freedom of speech. They didn't just killed 12 people. They attacked the very heart of freedom. This slogan is a way to show that they may have try to kill our freedom by killing Charlie hebdo. But we all defend this freedom, we are this freedom that's why we say we are Charlie.
If it's about freedom of speech, which I don't necessarily think the focus should be on, then that I suppose is fine but let's be clear. You cannot attack freedom of speech. There is no manner in which to do so and you certainly cannot attack it through violence.
Let's not get on the moral high horse about "Our Freedom!" please let's just not it's too vast a discussion to have.
The one and only thing I dislike in your post above are the emotive buzzwords you use..... almost sounds like propaganda.
"Heart of Freedom" "Our Freedom" "Kill our Freedom"

When I say "our freedom", it's because France has always been a symbol of liberty throughout history. I dont think this kind of attack would've had the same impact in any other country. You don't seem to understand that it's ALL about freedom of speech..
This newspaper was particularly well known for beeing against all rules, for being sarcastic against everybody and no matter who or what it was.
In the last 200 years you mean? Either way you are right, the France historically is an example of one of the great democracies of the world.
And yes I do know the background on Charlie Hebdo. News coverage of the incident has been very detailed. Regardless there's no point in arguing about it.

Really true?.....really?!
Had u pegged as better than that
Hmmm. Sorry but I am not one for Hashtags and social media generated trends. I can appreciated what the Hashtag means and the sentiments it is generating around the world.
That is of course not to say that I don't sympathise with the staff's losses or the hardships they now face or understand why the people of the world are all standing up to celebrate the ideals of freedom of expression however I do so in my own way. I don't believe adding my digital tag to a public message board is indicative of that.
The second quote..... more an error on my part in terms of how I communicated the idea. I do not mean to infer that those of are joining in with the #JesuisCharlie movement are "pretending such" only that I myself could never hope to imagine such an awful situation.
Sorry if I don't hold up democratic ideals as the very centre of my universe.

It's probably wrong for me to bash ppl who aren't on the exact same page
I hate being such a flawed human sometimes
Edit: that's me saying sorry, I get carried away
Further edit: it was most likely wrong for me to make the thread to begin with
What doe ls it even accomplish... Really Middas...? Really...?!
Not at all.
It's just a cultural difference. I mean the people I know personally, myself included, are incredibly liberal in that way we think. That's just the way New Zealand is. It's cool to be what religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc that you want to be/are and we'll support you in that as well.
I'm just not a huge social media follower...... barely even use Facebook.
