I have fired numerous clips and couldnt seem to kill someone at point blank range so I gave up on the weapon, I hear its hit detection. I would really love to be able to kill when in the open chasing down almost dead enemies. Aim for the head. I will take that advance. I scrapped all my Ewar modules apart from precision enhancer, going with 3 enhanced repairs and loving it. I can duck and return with almost full eHP and finish 3 enemies at a go, very much fun haha

Too many conflicting advice I am at level 5 operation and I think level 2 proficiency. Whenever I got killed by the shotgun its always been at a longer range than I can shoot. I dont know if increasing proficiency will change much. I had to default to a breach scrambler pistol when all else failed. I even used a breach shotgun when I was fed up of almost killing enemies. I do think that the shotgun does give me overconfidence as I chase down 5 enemies when I am with it. I was more careful when I used only sidearms

The Breach Shotgun is fun. Plus, you earn every kill with it more so than virtually every other weapon in the game. Yeah, it sucks. Which is precisely the reason you ought to START using it. Especially if you are a new player. Trial by ordeal.
Then again, not everybody makes intentionally gimped fits for funsies.

Shotgun hit detection and pellet spread aren't always predictable. I won't go for a headshot unless they're standing still. |

Sadly with my Amarr I cant do jumping jacks like all the Galente and Minamatar Scouts I have come across. I gave up on the breach scrambler pistol too Now I use a combat rifle and a flaylock: increase to blast radius is very enticing to make me skill it up. I have remotes and cloak in my equipment slot but my other fitting has uplinks instead of remotes and I just see a heavy and just stand still and die since I cant do much

You might consider running a red bottle or two, then: Sprint, jump, aim down, and time the shot. Don't weigh the Amarr scout down with armor that slows you down, either, as the shotgun scout unable to close the distance to its target is in a bad place.
But if you've had trouble with the single shot mechanics of the scrambler pistol, I suspect you're going to struggle with the shotgun too, so you might want to go to an automatic weapon like the ACR, ASR, ARR, or one of the AR variants. They can be very effective with the Am Scout and they are a bit more user friendly. |

Some very good advice in the replies already.
at 5 & 2 you are plenty skilled in - just keep practising. get close (use cloak, speed), aim properly via hipfire not sights and hit them as many times as possible before they figure out what's going on. if they manage to get an aim on you - either run away or carry a sidearm. hooray!
it might be different for some but I've found you rarely get loadsakills with an SG - it's great for sneaky play but never for stand up fights which you will lose every time.

I m guessing red bottle is kin cats. I have to admit that its getting harder, with all the protos, I needed 2 complex damps to not get scanned. If I met KB/M users its useless with single shot weapons if I dont finish them before they see me, thats why I am using the flaylock. Strafing is one thing but moving around in semi circles or circles and shooting perfectly is another story

It's not KBM that are moving in circles -- that's impossible. You're simply being killed by better players, IMO. |

No, don't listen to him, he has no idea what he's talking about. See I can not defend my argument too and just call you wrong, aren't I smart?
Inb4 gotta jump homes, that's terrible advice for a new player and only works for scouts when they catch you off guard. I've killed many a scout with a rifle just because I know exactly where they will be once they jump. And you are probably one of those people who would then blame hit detection when you miss after bunny hopping like a spaz. |

I have killed a lot of scouts with my breach scrambler it works like a shotgun, but with lag its useless, flaylock works wonders with lag as I dont have to aim. With all the skills I spent on the scrambler, the target HUD or whatever its called is so small that its very easy to miss, especially during freeze frames and circle strafing. I am in no way a new player though. I guess automatic weapons do make up for the lag and other frame rate issues. My preferred weapons are
Light slot : Breach scrambler pistol sidearm slot: Bolt pistol
but lag and hit detection issues makes using it a chore

It's much harder than most will think. Well with a Militia Shotgun and STD Calscout it is. :p
Flank and blap. I like it. Reminds me of the shake and vac advert.

@Timtron
Try all the advice, see what works for you.
I think you'll find that the way you end up having to dance around trying to land enough shots means attempting headshots after the first, assuming you catch them unawares and you can guarantee the hit, isn't good advice. But you never know - it may work for you. With the high alpha damage you already have though, headshots aren't as important as they are with other guns.
Also I would try the breach at some point. Because the low clip size will make you a better shotgunner. When you only have two shots to play with, your aim will improve, as will your positioning. Then you can go back to normal shotty and wreck face ;-)

This is simply not true. KBM can strafe circles easy, it is not any easier or harder than analog sticks on a gamepad. Circle strafing is dependent on how you manipulate your aiming controls moreso than your movement. Any lateral or diagonal movement is all you need, the look controls handle the rest and actually create the circle. Anyone with a hand for their mouse or thumb for their sticks can strafe circles around their opponent in as wide or tight a formation as possible. And anyone with with half decent dexterity can do it well regardless of control input choice. |

It's the way hit detection in DUST works.
You have to wait for your circle "Crosshair" To light up "Red"
You can have that circle dead center on target... and if it isn't lit up "Red" your shots will only do 5% damage..
You can't really just twitch aim a shotgun... Because CCP's hit detection system lags and won't light up the crosshairs that fast.
A Good shotgunner is a patient one with Hit detection and will only shoot when their crosshairs are red and lit up, and wait for that exact time it does.
AS the time goes on you will get faster at the process of waiting for your crosshairs to light up before you fire... To the point where it feel almost instinct.
But it will ruin you when you go to play another Shooter game with actual competent hit detection systems. |
