CCP you need to swap keys and strongboxes to prevent all this rage.
heres the thing, we have hundreds of strongboxes now and no keys to open them, hence all the rage.
everyone feels this way because to us it feels like we have all this loot in our hands already and your sticking the way to get at it behind a paywall.
BUT
if the strongboxes were the rare object (and sold for AUR) and they keys were as common as boxes now then there wouldnt of been so much rage!
functionally its identicle i know, but people dont think like that, since the boxes are the source of all the loot it just feels like the loots already ours and just not accessable. but if the boxes were rare then we would be genuinly excited to open them because of their rarity.
TL:DR make the boxes rare and the keys common because psychology.

thats because its human nature, while functionally its the same, the boxes contain the loot, so from our perspective we already have all the loot and just cant get at it, but if the boxes were the rare piece then internally our minds wouldnt cincider it to be the same thing because keys contain no loot :P
its basic psychology and im rather upset that they were soo close to making that an awesome thing that everyone was ecited about
"oh yah i got a strongbox lets open this badboy!!!"
to
"**** another 16 strongboxes i cant do anything with...."
nobody wants to purcahse acess to something they already own, but people WOULD buy strongboxes as long ass they had keys to open them.

nobody wants to purcahse access to someething they already own, but people WOULD buy strongboxes as long as they had keys to open them. It works both ways. "Ugh! I have these strongboxes. I need to get my stuff back so I will get keys!" Copy and paste from a previous post I made:
"I watched a documentary on math and how it works with psychology. In one part, a psychologist was stopping people on the street and offering them a chance to get some money by playing a game. He had a roulette wheel. Call black or red and get some money. But he treated people two different ways. Group A was given 10 dollars and asked if they want to risk their 10 to get 20. Group B was given 20 dollars, then had a 10 taken away, and asked if they want to play to get the 10 back.
Group A generally said "No thanks" and walked away with some lunch money. Group generally said "I would like to play." The reason why is because Group A was given, well, a free lunch while Group B felt they had something taken away and they wanted to get it back. Group B members spoke about "I wanted my money back!" That is similar to how crates/strongboxes work. We cannot buy them with ISK because they exist to earn money for CCP. Like drug dealers, expect to get a free key every now and then to push people into getting more keys. "
By making the strongboxes, the thing they say the stuff is in, abundant and keys hard to find it compels people to want to know what the stuff they "already have" is. People will see that they have all these strongboxes and they just need the key. Sure, you can flip the scenario both ways to favor selling keys versus boxes. One advantage with selling keys rather than boxes is that it might give people the impression that CCP isn't selling the loot. The loot you earned, you just need to get a key to get into it. If it was selling strongboxes, CCP would be selling the loot.
Of course, gear actually isn't in the boxes. But by making it seem that way, it might compel more people to get keys, "I wonder what is inside!" is more of a mental tugging action rather than "I wonder what I will get if I buy a box." All I know is that there is a reason why games with this mechanic sell keys rather than boxes considering it is a very common tactic. If the other way was better, I think someone would have done it the other way by now.

the problem with the study is that it measures a one time interaction and not the effects of prolonged repeated interaction.
the other problem is that in the study the $10 they had left was still valid, it hasd a use. but in our little strongbox world they dont. they arnt useful on their own.
its like telling subject B he cant spend the $10 he has left unless he wins the game.
it changes things quite a bit
as now subject A walks away with 10$ and subject B either plays or walks away with nothing.
this situation leaves subject B with an overall negative feeling about the interaction because he was denied ALL of what was givin to him if he chose not to play the game instead of just it being about risking half.

I would actually be more annoyed. Because I'd have a useless loot item that only became useful if I pumped money into the game. |

Not quite as useless, but close enough. CCP really screwed up on this one. And console kids? Woe are the rich, that they can afford better gaming equipment. Such a terrible life you must lead. |

Are you sure you just don't want us to have tons of free boxes? I know you're game you rogue... CCP switches the drop rate and now we have keys to open all these boxes.
Next week you will claim its less psychologically damaging if the keys are more rare.
Personally I just wish they would let me sell the boxes for like 50 isk, but they wouldn't do that as they want to think my annoyance at the clutter would drive me to gamble. Can't blame them though I'm sure it will work on others. |

Then there would be no point to collecting keys to begin with as they would be as common as mud. I think this can be solved by making the boxes less common, the keys more common, but both still remain rare.
