keys and boxes are available in the EOM salvage, as well as rewards for daily missions. Each box contains a good chance of aur std/adv/pro gear for the new players and veterans alike, skillbooks, rare gear such as officer gear, plus boosters.
We are using this logic as the foundation of loot, instead of the EOM salvage which was too limited for our needs.

i assume they will be something along the lines of what a few other games already do like STO where these are quite common items to get but the keys are not. while everyone can get access to them they will likely aquire more boxes than keys hence the keys for aur.
if they are using the same model as other games we might see extra rare bpos and items in these boxes which can only be obtained through opening them.
overall should be a nice addition to the game. we all like free stuff

edit : or what they said above me I have major pay-to-win alarms going off. It may release with a very reasonable mix of gear, and reasonable drop rates of keys, and then some dude in the financial department might have the bright idea of silently turning a few dials on various percentages to make them more enticing to spend the AUR. Combine this with player trading, and this well-intentioned mechanic could easily devolve into buying officer gear for AUR. The extreme rarity of officer gear is what keeps the balance of otherwise very OP items in-check (and I love that they are OP and very rare--it adds more risk/reward). If it ever becomes possible to buy a ton of boxes for very little ISK and unlock them for AUR to get tons of officer gear, the game will have crossed the threshold into pay-to-win territory.
All parties involved (CCP, CPM, the players) need to be vigilant against this happening. It could seriously break DUST. I would like to hear CCP commit to always keeping the CPM informed about any changes to drop rates in the future. There should be a policy that CCP never changes drop rates without publicly announcing it.

Blah blah irrelevant post blah. Your point regards player trading, a feature that defeats your greatest concern. Play eve sometime. When CCP says player trading, that means EVERYTHING. When items can be traded, keys can be bought for aurum and traded for isk. This way the casual player can find his/her character with real money while the hardcore player can use the isk they earn to buy otherwise aurum goods from ppl who do support the game. Everything in game becomes attainable. The game then is truly free to play. Even boosters could potentially go for a few million isk. Meditate on the glorious truth of eve player trading. It will be a magical thing |

Irrelevant? I don't thibk what Vellocet said was irrelevant, it was absolutely true. If it happebs that you earn much more boxes than keys, and that these keys can be obtained much easily with AUR, then it could unbalance the game seriously between players who pay and those who don't.
But we don't know the droprate yet so we'll just have to wait and see ^^

But we don't know the droprate yet so we'll just have to wait and see ^^ The irrelevance Greiv is referring to is Vell0cet's statements of "pay-to-win" in the first, following it up with "player market" in the next.
We already know Mission Rewards will allow us to earn keys. My fear is that drop rates of Encrypted Strongboxes will be so common, it will entice users to buy AUR for the purpose of mass purchasing of keys and enlist in "RNG pay-to-win" lottery so to speak.
Player markets and/or player trading would in fact make it further from a "pay-to-win" scenario. While this would still depend on Lockbox drop rates, it would allow players the option of working toward keys via Missions, or buying or trading with other players to achieve keys with ISK.
What interests me is Rattati revealing that skillbooks would be something dropped from Lockboxes, which strongly suggests to me that Player Market and/or Trading is in the near future. Skillbooks are either not a problem for many vets - either the ISK is not a problem, or we already have said skill. It's great that this is being implemented, don't get me wrong, as it greatly helps the NPE. However as a vet, I don't need extra skillbooks. Unless those skillbooks can become an extra revenue source.
TL;DR: "Lockboxes" + "Player trading/market" =/= "Pay-to-win". "Lockboxes" + "Drop rates" may = "Pay-to-win" or at the very least, the stench of similar enticement of "mobile game" apps.

I'm less concerned about the box to key ratio.
They should absolutely entice people but if the strongboxes net sufficient mat+¬riel to account for decent earnings then you could have a 1/10 ratio and be fine.
People get so fixated on the gear that they forget that your average proto stomping lunatic isn't much less destructive in STD gear than he is in PRO.
SP is king. What I like is the potential to gain boosters from EOM salvage occasionally. That alone makes opening them with whatever keys you scrounge worth the effort blasting away in matches.
The only advantage this crap gives someone is having more stuff.
Until CCP puts the invulnerable uberdropsuit that requires officer weapons to kill we have not achieved PtW.

Player trading is listed on the roadmap for DUST. I suspect this will launch with reasonable rates. My fear is that guys in the financial department will try to ninja tweak the rates to boost revenue at some point. I think it's reasonable for us to demand that any such decision should be discussed with the CPM beforehand, and always announced publicly when drop rates do change. They don't have to publish the rates, but they should let us know when the rates are changing.
Officer gear must always remain very rare. If AUR becomes a shortcut to cheap/easy officer gear, then there will be serious, game-breaking problems.

Officer gear isn't as swanky as people make it out to be.
I rather gleefully expend them when I get them.
But it's only slightly better than proto, besides which there is already a massive stockpile of officer weapons in play.
For example I have 30 thale rifles.
I can't use them. But I have them. If I logged in I could go from sniper 1 to proficiency 4 when I got off work and play demonic LOLmando sniper god.
But the STD does the job I need it to (shooting snipers)

All parties involved (CCP, CPM, the players) need to be vigilant against this happening. It could seriously break DUST. I would like to hear CCP commit to always keeping the CPM informed about any changes to drop rates in the future. There should be a policy that CCP never changes drop rates without publicly announcing it.
yep same here as I log into dust and I see "Unlock your mystery box today!!!" all over my screen... Depending on what gear is in those boxes this is a whole nother breed of Pay-to-win.... |

Whoa, wait a minute.
HMG + SCR + Flaylock on a Sentinel? Well that sounds interesting.

You and Cat and Arkena need to get these and all run the same setup.

But we don't know the droprate yet so we'll just have to wait and see ^^ Excuse me did you say blah blah even more irrelevant post blah? Oh I see... You had a bandwagon to jumpbon so yyou didn't bother to read my post. Player trading means hacked decryptor keys will be available for isk. For more info, google "Plex for free". Have a great day |

Bing bing bing we've got a winner here! And the nicer thing (potentially) about strongboxes with skillbooks is that, in eve, some skillbooks are drop only(or is that different now?) Meaning a rare skill book, depending on skill, may be worth quite a chunk of isk(or perhaps trade for a couple keys? Lol) |

On other terms: CCP Rattati has the same internet problems as I once did! :p I feel pretty strong about them. Pretty strong. It's the keys. There in lies the rub. keys can be obtained through missions as well if i'm no mistaken keys and boxes are available in the EOM salvage, as well as rewards for daily missions. Each box contains a good chance of aur std/adv/pro gear for the new players and veterans alike, skillbooks, rare gear such as officer gear, plus boosters. We are using this logic as the foundation of loot, instead of the EOM salvage which was too limited for our needs. Terribly sorry to bother you, but will the skillbooks level up the skill or just unlock it for free? If the latter, what happens if you already have it?
IGS is so quiet now, the silence is almost unbearable.

Okay. I have 4 boxes, and bought two keys because lol that's how much AUR I had left. Each key is 800 AUR, if bought. Not TOO expensive, but not cheap either. Since you have a chance of acquiring officer gear, I feel it is justified.
Anywho, on to the Kinder surprises. You unlock boxes with missions, and how much you are able to get are listed on the rewards side of the mission menu. Some give 1, others as much as 3. I had to play 3 matches to unlock 3 boxes, and get 1k WP to unlock 1 other.
Since I only had 2 keys, I'm not able to tell you how often you would get 'good' drops. There is another player, though, who is doing exactly that. Kudos to him. Anywho, with the two keys I've used, I've acquired 1x Krin's AR and 9x Defender Special Issue MK-II A.
I, also, finished 5 missions in quick succession with 3 total matches, and have received 5x Hellmar Ak.0s (I THINK they were 5. Forgot the exact amount). With each 5 missions you finish, you get a special reward, by the way.
Most of the mission rewards offered ISK, 5x whatever item (for me, they were 'Guardwire' Bolt Pistols), or boxes.
It is possible to earn SP, but I don't have any missions that offer them as rewards. |

Two light weapons on an Assault? With the other stats that sounds like it's going to be one OP suit. Though I wouldn't expect anything less from a suit named after the Holy One. I call it the Thundercougarfalconbird
