NICE, to see this thread run so many pages.
I predicted that, once the heat dies down about Equipment (anti-spamming) Bandwith being introduced, Patch 1.10 would be remembered for boldly attacking the "Strafing Exploit" (some argue it's really a strafing CHEAT), in more exotic and controversial ways than previous game titles ever really did.
Not trying to speak for CCP, but I feel sure they have teammates who have always felt the "strafe" technique of avoiding your opponent's bullets, was a legendary gimmick that has unfairly ruled fps games for way too long.
"Strafing" is an excuse-name for what we are doing---we're really jumping backwards like bunnies, backpedalling in 15 ft diameter circles around the shooter, figure-eight rolling with the analogue sticks while shooting, and leap-froggin over the shooter's head right after we quick-shotty him.
We only call it "strafing" for the same reason a lousy driver who nearly causes highway accidents calls herself "an aggressive driver": to give a more positive "power" perspective on what she is doing, while implying that other drivers are weaker or timid if they can't drive the way she does.
...There really never was any such reality as "aggressive drivers". They are just lousy drivers who push the exploitable intention of road safety lines and procedures, and make driving unsafe for the rest of us.
...There really never was much reality in what we call "strafing" in our fps games. The arguement is that these are just players who exploit the intention of the controller buttons and game movements, and make the game annoyingly too cartoonish and evasive for the rest of us.
I am not officially saying I agree or disagree with the argument about the strafe-exploit gimmick. But, just like the issues that Aim-Assist responded to in Dust, I think it is something that needs to be strongly REDUCED (not entirely eliminated). And I'm glad to see Dust is the game stepping forward to inventively try.

It's likely not going to be as rock-solid and unnecessary to tweak as the Aim-Assist design was, but I believe with some adjustments and polish, the Strafe-Penalty mechanic will work.
The SIGNIFICANCE of it is certainly starting to sink in... LOL.
