Is a reinstall better? Think IWS said something to that effect.

Well, there is the potential for unintended file interaction so a clean install would still be a good idea. Sure, it takes longer, but that's the downside of a clean install. The real issue, though, is if there will be a new client up tomorrow. Could just be the current client. |

I deleted the game and re-downloaded and installed last week and I can say for sure, the menus and stuff load faster and are snappier. I didn't really notice any difference in game but I think it was worth it just for the faster UI in menus. Felt a lot smoother.

Always delete and reinstall.
Did some testing on this a few months back and it makes a noticeable difference in menus and the Neocom.

I had an old client and the game size was around 5GB. Deleted and reinstalled the new client and that is only 2GB-2.5GB (don't know off the top of my head)
It does seem to load faster and smoother when you first start the game and like CommanderBolt said earlier, the UI and menus do seem abit faster. I don't have an SSD or anything but the loading times do seem a bit better.
I doubt they could upload a new client to the PSN so fast but then again downtime will be 3+ hours so i don't see why they couldn't swap the client to include the released update.
Thinking about it now every dust player will be wanting to download the update as soon as possible so....im anticipating some downloading issues as everyone and their mom downloads the updates.

Wow. Old Dust514 was around 5.13 GB of data.
I heard they managed to make it around 2.5GB
That should help. A LOT.
I also have never uninstalled since I got it back in Open Beta-1.0.
If this fixes all my PC lag ever, I will be a very happy Ghost.

actually, it's better if you format the entire ps3 first, and then install (after getting back your psn account).

I have never, ever re-installed Dust514.
Either IWS doesn't know anything about how PS3/PSN do updates or he doesn't know how software works.

I did not noticed any effect of reinstalling in terms of loading times but I use a hybrid drive thus it is as fast as it is technically possible on the PS3.
reinstalling reduces the size of your installation though because old data is not deleted automatically. |

danie braz wrote:Is a reinstall better? Think IWS said something to that effect. yes, delete and download/install a new client, it cleans out the cache speeds up menus and can get rid of unwanted file interaction (crashes)

Which means I can't do it until tomorrow, since I have to use my PS4 USB for my PS3 Controller. *SIGH* I'll just download and then defrag later. Sucks. I was gonna do it tonight. its actually 2356mb or something, after logging in all my charaters it went up to like 2370ish which i assume is cache for racial suits/quarters

PlayStation 3 handles files like Linux in a format called CellFS so your files are never fragmented. |

Defrag your PS3 once a month and it will run beautifully. that internet wisdom... again, ps3 handles files like Linux in a format called CellFS so your files are never fragmented. I think most of the community is Windows-brained so it's the best way for them to explain it in one word.
For those of us with a little more knowledge, we know it's not the case.
For those interested:
Quote:NTFS is a Microsoft technology and will never be used locally on the PS3. NTFS is part of the Windows NT family of products (NT 3.0-4.0, 2K, XP, Vista) and is well over a decade and a half old.
PS3 uses a Sony proprietary format that is loosely based on EXT3 which requires no defragmentation.
In addition the way the files are managed on the PS3 means that very few if any file fragments are generated during the course of your use.
File Fragments are generated when a file is written too and the file size grows as a result. The majority of Game saves and game installs never increases the size of the actual file size over time. Thus no fragments are ever generated by the player when committing to these operations.
Only times where fragmentation might occur are software patches to already installed data, add-ons, or the repetition of continuously downloaded material like videos. However none of these are enough to create massive amounts of file fragmentation that becomes detrimental to the system.
Also during the starting install and starting download screens the PS3 does a quick shuffling of data that is currently on the drive in order to make room for the new file that is to be created on the hard drive. This drastically reduces the odds of fragmentation even more. The shuffling attempts to re-unit fragments or move smaller files around to locations where a fragment for bigger files might end up thus creating a larger space for larger files. Since there is so little fragmentation to begin with this process normally only takes a few seconds before it can actually start the download/install process.
As a result if a defrag utility was ever created for the PS3 it would be useless. The performance benefits are so small that you'll question why you even bothered to run the defrag to begin with.
The only time this system begins to break down is when your hard drive is almost completely full. Since you need a large space to do defrag to begin with it further negates the necessity for a defrag utility so both means of fragmentation prevention fails. However in this case you should be considering getting a new hard drive for your PS3 anyway, as you've obviously have out grown your 20/40/60/80 gig hard drive. http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-General/What-does-quot-Rebuilding-Database-quot-mean/m-p/6504841/highlight/true#M109789
