Hello there.
I have been rolling an idea around in my head about the SP cap.
Basically where Im coming from is that the current cap mechanics make it pretty much impossible to catch up to veteran players if you are just starting the game, because the SP cap is pretty low and makes getting the SP you need to make your first proto level fit a pretty long process.
My idea is to implement a progressive SP cap, where the lower your SP is, the higher your cap is. This can be done through a straight formula calculated every week when cap resets, or by brackets.
Example Numbers: Take your average SP amount of all players (not counting players no longer active), and build brackets based on how much SP they have compared to each other.
People who have earned 50% or less of the average amount will have 4x (or maybe even unlimited) current SP cap for the week.
People who have earned 50% or greater, up to the average SP, will have 3x current SP cap for the week.
People who have earned the average SP up to 2x the average SP number will get 2x current SP cap for the week.
People who have earned more than 2x the average SP number will get the normal current SP cap for the week.
You can fiddle with the numbers above or the methodology all you want, the basic idea is that people with less SP should get a higher cap each week so they have a chance in hell of catching up before doomsday.

Too much math, too many variables.
Needs to be simplified but I absolutely agree with your intentions.
EVE Online is what you get when engineers attempt to create "fun" without consulting someone who comprehends the word.

Any SP balancing should not be to make new players catch up to veterans faster, however the balance curve of how quickly players go from level 1 skills to level 3 skills to level 5 skills could be a useful discussion.
If new players have really integrated into a community on the game where they get all the info they need about what to skill up, when they hit 6-8 million SP they will already have enough skills to have proto suit, weapon, and a good smattering of dropsuit upgrades, armor/shield, etc.
Equipment can make you perform better, but still learning how to play the game is the most important part. |

The difference in HP from a starter medium suit to a proto medium suit is 2-3x the HP, and thats not counting damage/scanning/skill and all the other advantages veteran players have. Im not sure about you but I find that kind of difference in equipment is pretty dramatic. The starter player experience is one of being not only stomped by superior equipment, but of also being blocked from achieving the same equipment by a restrictive SP cap.
Expecting people to compete against people with 500+ hp more than them even though they are using the exact same suit type is just silly, yet thats what we have. Either make some equipment restricted brackets to play in, or make it easier to catch up in SP (I personally would prefer both). |

I have like.. 34 million SP right now, sometimes I go back and just spend a whole day playing the starter 'frontline' and 'medic' suits, dont change the loadouts.
Sure I do have all the benefits of skills boosting the stuff in the starter fits, but I don't find it impossible to be competative.
Many FPS dont really have HP bars, just shoot a few times and the guy duys, or when you get shot you see red around the screen to indicate how wounded you are, Dust is different from many FPS out there, people survive longer.
New players do have all the tools they need, and they can make those tools better with skills for sure, and proto suits can help you equip more stuff.
I would say, I'm not against the amount of SP progression that is going on. but the SP progression versus skill progression might need some tweeking.

OK well, if you think the starter suits are good at anything but being crushed into a bloody heap because you can do ok with them, good for you. I can do OK with them too, that doesnt mean they are anywhere near as effective as running a proto fit with complex modules, or even a standard fit with advanced modules.
This isnt a thread about how unreasonably insane you are that you think having ~1/3rd the health other people using the same exact suit type is somehow a competitive situation by any definition of the word, its about the SP cap being unfriendly to new players. |

You kinda got your wish, there's going to be a higher SP cap now, but older players will get a slightly higher SP cap because of veteran loyalty level.
Which I agree with, things should not be skewed towards new players earning tons more SP.

Is it me or this guy would like that proto and militia be competitive against each other? HAHAHAHAHA GTFO pls.
Dust is about grinding and getting sp to maximise your chances to win. Why the hell would a new MLT frontline scrub be competitive against a full proto vet? :o What is the point of sp then???
Proto and mlt suits arent the same suits btw, don't you ever say this again.
Sorry for my bad english.

Im pretty happy with the higher cap. The real issue is getting those new players to a baseline of competitiveness (basically one or two fits that go toe to toe with the vets), which this helps with. |

They are the same type of suits. The militia medium frame is the same as proto medium frame, militia heavy is the same as proto heavy, etc.
I dont even know what to say about the grinding and getting sp to win, Im playing this game because its fun. The SP thing is an mildly amusing sidebar to me.
Whats not fun is throwing militia frames into the same games as proto suits and expecting them to just deal with it even though its clearly not any kind of competition between them. Thats kinda what Im getting at. Proto suits stomp milita/std stuff. Why are they thrown into the same games together? |
