If you are talking about the baseline skills, then yes. You can even go with the "if it is a baseline skill that gives you a blanket buff, you should use it." Engineering and Electronics are much more of the "Fork and Knife" of the steak that is the DUST skill tree, essential, but anything that is a flat bonus and not module efficiency is generally worth skilling up because it is always in effect. Sure, you can get into the fact that it is not always super useful if you are running around as a Heavy or a Tank to have Range, Damp, and Precision maxed but they are still good to have.
Same thing with % HP, Sprint Speed/Stamina/Recharge really.

Dampening is most important, as you will easily be killed if you are scanned.
Then I would say Range, because that is your bonus, and Precision third.

Don't dampen...as with the 30% bonus from caldari scout operati0n V and dampening V you dont need to. I run precision with codebreakers to catch any sneaky scouts sneaking up on me on my radar

I have precision and range to 5. Dampening to 4.
The PE's are nice to have. Slap on two to scan arrogant scouts who haven't put/skille enough damps on (I've scanned a cloaked Gallente Scout with only one PE before).
Range and Scout to 5, and I don't need to fit an Amplifier on the suit.
I have been scanned once (no damps fitted, must've been a Proto Gallogi). I've been passively scanned and then ambushed by an ak.0 scout (or maybe he just saw me).
Give the Magsex some love.

Yes I have used fits similar to this, its a nice role to play but personally I grew to dislike it in some ways as with this fit, you are great in a squad or solo and offer a very heightened sense of awareness for yourself and squad. However you have:
A. Bugger all speed (which is I guess a personal preference maybe) B. Bugger all hit points, (A rail rifle or other rifleman you didn't spot or you were not made aware of by your scans will pick you off in a split second at even 80-100M range.) C. I would argue more limited in your weapon role (I.E high alpha damage weapons [SG,PLC etc..] suit this loadout more than general rifles)

Gal scout + 3 Complex Dampeners + Proto Cloak being tracked by a Commando with a Laser rifle (not saying it's the commando or the laser rifle) it was when i hit the bottom with this game. I have a Cal Scout too, that's beyond useless. (being tracked by heavies when i'm using 2 Comp Dampeners)
Why did you guys listen to all these cry babies and ruin the game for us ?! Anything other than brick tanked suits is borderline useless.
Choices we made were supposed to have bonuses and consequences.... I ended up with 2 Proto Assault Suits, 2 Proto Scout suits, 1 Proto Heavy and Proto Commando... Choices don't mean anything anymore. It is better to remove that "Description" section from each suit, weapon and item. it get's changed every two weeks anyways. |

It's the truth though. The base range on the Assault is so small that it poses more problems than benefits.
1) You've likely seen anything within that range and if you haven't, they saw -you- and there's a reason they're behind you. 2) The only thing that will be within that range to begin with is CQC and if they're that close, it's already too late to do anything about it. 3) This is assuming you even see it as the icons will often be too close together for you to even notice something is there. 4) Obligatory mention of the 'not able to hear anything behind me' optimization that makes the base scan range useless all together.

It's good for true-noob stomping. If they have dampening skills trained up, it will cancel out your precision skills. You can use your Assault radar to guess who will be the weakest link and knock them out fast. Most vets will have dampening 5.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a much longer sensor range, but with the falloff mechanic that many modules have space-side?

I believe you are correct.
According to my numbers, a Min Assault (50 dB base, 45 dB with max skills) needs 1 complex damp (34 dB with max skills) to evade vehicle scanners (35 dB).

of course it will help, even if you use an assault suit. not everybody uses a scout and every medium wont have dampening to 5, granted outside your eyes serve you better but indoors or when hacking stuff people can spawn on, you get a heads up
