Just wanted to toss this note into the fray, my PS3 has been hard-crashing with Dust514 for a few months now. I should have reinstalled it earlier, but whatever. When I went to uninstall, I noted that the install file was at 5.7GB, and now it's around 3.2GB. I'm hoping that this will reduce hard crashes.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

The hard crash might also be the result of lack of cooling. Elevate your PS3 with 2 blocks to make a gap for air to pass through and avoid placing the PS3 inside any confined space such as that of a backed shelf.

There does seem to be a bit of client 'bloat', recently did the same as you and reinstalled Dust. Found the fresh copy significantly smaller in footprint.
Also took the opportunity to do a back up and full reformat of the SSD I've got in my PS3. The game does seem a little snappier in the menus as a result.

Maken,
Thank you for the good suggestion. I have done this and have also experienced crashing within 10-15 minutes of boot-up
Apothecary,
Interesting, I'll keep notes on the behavior. I'm not worried about the file size, but I had the client installed from back in the 1.2-1.3 days on this particular box
Kevall,
How do you like the SSD in your playstation?
Additional notes,
On a second PS3, my profile would still crash, but it usually took half as long. On my primary PS3, a different account doesn't have freezing issues.
Thanks all,

I had this exact same problem so I dusted out my PS3 and made sure that it was well ventilated. This solved the problem for a while but despite these methods it would persist.
Eventually, I solved the problem completely by reducing the amount of channels I have. In a span of 4 months, I've only had this happen once.

Update: Played on and off over 5 hours today, responsive and stable, lots of FW. Then, while waiting for deployment, it hard froze on me again.
Atiim,
Thank you, I have not thought to flush my channels, I will try this next. This is probably the last thing I can think of to clear [Fits, Save Game File, Install]. Now that I ramble on, I haven't cleared my vehicle fits... so I'll do that as well.
Can anyone think of any other cache location to clear?
Cache Locations I know of:
Channels < thanks Atiim Fittings Vehicle Fittings Save Game File < on the XMB in the PS3 Menu Install FIle
Thanks All,

Try cleaning out the PS3. I know this works on both slim versions, not sure on the fatty:
-Unplug the power cable -WHILST HOLDING THE EJECT BUTTON, plug the cable back in -When the fans start wait 2 seconds and let go of the eject button -Once the fans have turned off, unplug the power cable again -Take a vaccuum cleaner, and use it to suck all dust out of the vents at the back, do it for about 1 minute. -Plug back in whilst holding the eject button omce more -Repeat the above steps till you have unplugged the power cable again -Put power cable back in, power up as normal.
This increased my speed drastically. Hope it helps you and others!

Denchlad 7,
I appreciate you sharing that method. I'm curious to the reason for the eject-button dance? Does this clear out capacitors? ("The Capacitor Is Empty") I'll give this a try.
I'm not having hard freezes in other games during extended play, other than the 1/year that most playstations experience.
Thanks to you all for your advice!

EDIT: Denchlad 7, can you clarify [Repeat the above steps till you have unplugged the power cable again] in the above list. I'm wondering how many cycles.

My ps3 slim has past its date on cleaning. I normally clean it every month but now with college = Not a chance of even using the ps3.
I have been getting disconnected from the FREAKING PSN NETWORK!! It happens 4 times when playing Dust 514.
Its not the game its just PSN are DICKS.

Please do vacuum your ps3 out. Reinstall should help with the bloat on the client and any memory leaks that previously exist.

I probably should have followed some of these suggestions over the summer, before my PS3 got the YLOD. I was getting more frequent hard freezes, PSN cut outs, and crashes with Dust, and then all of a sudden one day the console just spontaneously shut down (while playing Dust). Haven't been able to turn it on since.
Also, had no idea the client file size ballooned up to ~6gb. I've never deleted and re-installed Dust since I first downloaded it in 2012 (apart from update installations).

When you hold the eject button it boots the PS3 in its Cleaning Mode, if you like. Consider it like booting your PC in Safe Mode, or something like that.
By repeating, I mean the following: -Unplug the power cable from the PS3 -Whilst holding the Eject Button, plug power cable back in -Release Eject Button 2 seconds after fans have turned on -When fans have turned off unplug power cable -Reconnect power cable
Do this before and after vaccuuming the system.

Turns out this is not recommended for SuperSlim PS3's. Currently I'm stuck in the infinite recovery loop, and will be looking at a clean reformat or new hard drive depending on the course of the day. Hopefully all this will result in the freeze issue stopping after all.

I now consider not having SSD as your primary boot drive if the option to do so exists, as the act of a fool.
My laptop, my gaming PC rig and the PS3 have SSD. Even my mid 2007 iMac now has a 1tb SSD hybrid in there.
The important thing, if getting one for the PS3, is to get one with TRIM support built in, as the Sony OS doesn't have it. The difference in loading speed is noticeable, as well as the console being a bit quieter. Textures and maps load much quicker from the cache and UI just seems snappier.
The real difference is in installation times especially for Disc based games. Dust installs quicker than normal as you'd expect but The install time for The Last Of Us was halved from its disc. Formatting, recovery and back up is also much faster.
Ultimately you can still use the normal drive and enjoy the console and game to the same extent. I just wouldn't want to lose that edge in speed that the SSD gives me.

THIS CAN DAMAGE YOUR PS3 Never use vaccum cleaner to clear your electronic like that. 1. If vacum cleaner starts spin fans - this generate electricy in your system 2. You can easly damage electronics with static electricy from vacum celaner
Whach out what you do!
