Well, colour me pleasantly surprised!
Although, the pessimist in me questions the wisdom of keeping 1.9's development a secret all this time.
I wonder how many people that have quit under the impression that it was unlikely to ever happen would still be here if CCP was a little more open about what they've been working on?
Sure, some might come back for 1.9, but many are gone for good now, lost forever. |

Primary reason for doing something like this is to not promise what isn't possible. So they don't want to announce it until they know for sure what is or isn't going to be in it.
Fair enough, and@Ripley, I understand the whole retention thing not being 100%, but that's not what I'm talking about here.
Basically, I just think it may have been a mistake for CCP to say that a client side patch was quote: "unlikely". I know for a fact that this is a big reason why many people left, and I'm just musing really over how many of them might have stayed if they knew that it wasn't completely off the table, as we were led to believe.
Not knowing for sure what 1.9 would CONTAIN is one thing. Knowing whether or not it is possible (or likely) at all is a completely different story. In many people's minds, the game was essentially on minimal life support, with no significant future content on the horizon.
I'm not saying that they should have made promises, it just seems like CCP did the complete OPPOSITE, and actually drove some players away unnecessarily.
How hard would it have been for them, once they decided that they WERE working on 1.9 again, to let us know, despite their previous claims that it was unlikely, that it was now possible (or even probable) without getting into the specifics?
It would at least have given the players something to look forward to, a ray of hope, if you will, and may have even encouraged some who have left to reconsider.
Again, I'm pleasantly surprised by the news, I just think that (once again) CCP handled the flow of information poorly. |
