Weapons on vehicles are broken in Dust514. Different weapons show different aspects of the problem which might well mean they are exhibiting different bugs. The effect to the player is the same. The weapon does not work consistently and occasionally does not work at all.
Rail guns are the worst, personally, because they will empty the magazine overheating the gun to unreachable levels. When it does that there is often no explosion, animation for the user (although others will see one) and no damage is rewarded. Often it seems to be triggered by enabling a module. So, armor tank busting around, gets hit and loses shields. First response is to enable an armor hardener. Then the gun no longer works. Sweet, better hope you have fuel injection and that it isn't cooling down.
Blasters have been Nerf Hammered into uselessness, IMHO, so I rarely will bring one out. Not worth the ISK or the time.
But, back to missiles*. If you tap (and I mean a very sharp, fast tap) the trigger you will most likely get one missile as a result. If you just reloaded the magazine and you have touched a module then you might well empty the clip if you simply pull the trigger. And they are subject to not firing at all, not doing any damage and emptying the magazine as well. A well rounded weapon, brought to you by CCP.
Some of the problem is Unreal Engine 3 and above. If you are running UE3* and require network interactivity you will most likely have a problem. The heavier the load on the systems, either your client or the servers, you will experience a range of problems. None of the UE3* games I have found problems in have the full breadth of CCP's issues in Dust514 however. A truly unique solution to weapon balance.
Also, some of this behavior exhibits itself on the ground as well as you will hear complaints about weapons doing no damage from Mercs. Just sayin, this might well be connected to generic damage model.
I don't play that often anymore so it is unlikely that I would spend any additional energy figuring out the actual problem. CCP doesn't have any plans to fix anything in the PS3 code nor have they ever 'liked' my previous, well stated and polite suggestions.
* I find that tapping repeatedly will have all the missiles in a magazine actually hit the target, be it installation or vehicle. If the missiles just rush out several will miss the target. A case in point is the buffed turrets. AT's will take them out with two magazines if all the missiles hit. A dump of the magazine will ensure you must reload the third time to finish off the turret.
In New Eden no SP is wisely spent.
CCP will Nerf the reason right out from under you.
