I do understand how you feel about that because I felt like that too. The one and only advice I can give you is to try to keep calm and to think about what you did wrong when you get killed. Just try to be a badass

1) Go STD Heavy for the easy kills and beefed up early stats and DPS and just put SP into the suits/weapons you actually want, using the heavy suit till you're ready.
2) Go Logi, using Uplinks, Hives, and Rep tool - support your team to your fullest, gaining tons of WP which nets you more SP and ISK at the end of the match. Finding a squad with a heavy or two makes this much easier.
3) Go Shotgun with dampeners. Wouldn't take Proto dampeners to get under most Pub scans, and shotguns can 3 shot a heavy. You'll find it the bi-polar opposite of the STD Heavy route, as this is the fragile yet quick and deadly route.
4) Rail Rifle/Sniper - Obviously this route is keep out of danger and shoot from safety. Rail Rifle would be the prefer choice, as sniping isn't as forgiving to new players. |

What do you want to do?
What are you using?
What are you getting wrecked by?
Fair warning this game takes the mental fortitude it takes to survive boot camp to get into. New players get savaged and only a few stick around long.
Also ignore the STD heavy/scout/sniper BS. If you blindly take that crap advice without understanding what you are getting into you will get torched. You won't have fun. |

A good place to start, would be to purchase one copy of every MLT item in the marketplace, and then see which ones you prefer to use. When you do that, send me some mail in-game and I'll help you from there.
Also, I'd recommend joining the channel, Learning Coalition. There's plenty of instructors who train new players there, and it's run by Immortal Guides, which is an academy corp that I think you should check out.

I'd look into joining DUST University. They're a corp (like a guild or clan) that specializes in training new players. You're not expected to stay with them forever, but just until you learn the game. I'm not affiliated with them, I get no kickbacks or anything, they have a really good reputation in the community.
This game is really designed to be played in a squad, so squadding up with other players is critical. You share scans with each other, making it much easier to know where the enemy is and avoid ambushes. Teamwork is really important. If you don't already have a mic, get one.

Join DevHangout in DUST and voice up if you see me.
I am a sentinel/commando specialist and have run every role in the game at one point or another to learn how best to kill them.
Best advice is to join a corp, learn what suits and modules do what, and build your fits around your preferred play style.
This game can cater to almost any style and since it is less mindlessly twitchy strategy and fitting matter as much as fast reflexes and awareness..
Basic rules:
1: grenades are not instant kill weapons. Don't rely on them.
2: do not run straight at anything bigger than you. He is easier to hit but will have more HP and does more damage than you. Flank and backshot him.
3: your rifle will not kill vehicles. Get out of the way or use anti-vehicle weapons (forge gun, plasma cannon, swarms, AV grenades, remote explosives)
4: gallente and amarr weapons kill shields best
5: Minmatar and caldari weapons bust armor best.
6: Gallente and caldari weapons are the most evenly balanced for shields and armor.
6: use AoE blast weapons to kill scouts.
7: never sit still. Forge guns, plasma cannon, shotguns, snipers and nova knives can one-shot you.
8: sidearms are now deadly. Don't laugh at the jerk woth the pistol. He can kill you.
9: if you see multiple people with the same corp in the same match it is a squad. Expect to get killed if you encounter them.
10: this rule is by far the most important. Teamwork is overpowered and bringing friends who you work well with should be done at every opportunity.
Six newbies in militia gear who coordinate well can annihilate 30+ million SP lunatics like myself running solo.
Friends make DUST not suck. |

Plan your Skill points,
Squad up, use cover,
Check behind you often,
Learn to use your TACNET (top left minimap) but do not rely on it /Because scouts/
Learn where sniper A-holes like to be so you can move cover to cover to counter them,
Learn the pants tingling pleasure of killing a protobear sniper with a "starter" sniper build.
Have at-least a standard level swarm/AV suit,
as a newer guy you may wish to run with an Injector as its +60 wp and make you get more SP at the end
Learn how to extract maximum warpoints with out being "one of those people" who spams uplinks and ammo at a supply depo,
Learn how to use squad commands
Learn choakpoints
Learn where people like to put uplinks
Learn to fly a dropship
do not run at heavy suits from the front.
i think thats all the advice i can give you with out knowing your direction (assault/scout/logi)

You are probably a victim of delayed syncing (lag or whatever) wherein sound and visual effects are delayed up to a second or so. I thought I sucked at the game and then realized everything is off by a second so can't gauge damage taken and can't react to opponents. Also, hit detection is still a problem. Shotgun scouts will shoot you while still cloaked.
CALDARI SCOUT HIT DETECTION IS BROKEN! FACT.
A good test is to get a heavy suit and step out of cover for about a second and move back behind cover as an opponent is firing at you. You will see the bullet effects and hear the sounds as you take damage after you have moved back into cover. You will take damage just as an opponent appears rather than after they have appeared and begun to fire. Also, people just move faster due to syncing issues. The animation sputters ever so slightly. Also, you will see people are not even facing you when they shoot at you as they turn so you can't gauge if you are indeed flanking them.
You will notice this with others too. You'll see people shooting at where you were as you strafe around them and you are ahead of where they think you are so you suddenly become boss.
I really think there are a lot of people who think they are good at this game, but are really just playing on a fast enou connection that they are taking advantage of syncing.
For this reason, playing a scout or a low sp character is difficult. I had to switch to a medium and heavy suit just to have a buffer so I could, maybe, enjoy this game.

I thought we all dealt with that, its been the same for me on three different internet connections. I always keep on taking damage for a second when I'm behind cover. Just sit there and wait to see how bad the damage is. Some scouts move a lot faster than mine, minmatar with two enhanced catalyzers. And some move left to right faster than is possible for me.
For the op, squad up, like everyone advises. 1/12 with 180 points my last game, My scout died 9 times going solo, trying to get uplinks near objectives. Merc with bolt pistol, got me 4 times, around "A", never did see him. He protected that objective well and finished 20/3. Died every time I tried to make it to "E" trying to get an uplink over there. A heavy and a logi were defending "B", died three times with my hmg tryinig to take over that one. We finally got it when four of us happened to show up at the same time. It was a close game, two pretty bad teams, so I kept trying. Would have been a lot more efficient to join up with a couple mercs and stick together.
The weapons change all the time. I would do like someone else said and try all the militia versions. When I was playing a lot last spring I was doing well with a scrambler rifle, its not as effective now. And was doing real good with a heavy and a forge with a sub machine gun. Kalakota forge doesnt seem to have the same damage it used to against vehicles and I cant get into the same suit I used to run, they must have changed some of the pg and cpu requirements. Bolt pistol, combat rifle and rail rifle seem to be most popular now, it will change, so just skill into what you like most. I tried the bolt pistol, there are some assault rifles that can kill my scout before my pistol will charge. They have good aim and get there really fast, as they bounce all over the place. If you need to stop and aim you will likely choose a weapon thats more suited to that style. |

I disagree with people saying look for your style - they want you to suffer.
The problem with there idea is they're making you go the long haul. Do you want to suffer, die, and be useless for your first month?
Or do you want to spend not even a million SP, get a STD heavy and STD HMG - and be competitive?
I know I gave 4 routes but there is only, really, just 2. Logi and Heavy - if you go anything else you're going to feel pain, lots of it, as players out-class you at every turn. The other two routes require both patience and skill in FPS gaming.
But heavies stats make it so you can compete even against 30+ million SP players with minimal FPS experience required to be any good. Is scout shotgunning a lot of fun and can sometimes be rewarding? Yea, but in all likelihood - one skilled player is going to make you feel like a glass slipper ready to break.
Go down the easy routes first, it isn't much SP at all, and once you start earning ISK from matches and get a handle on the game and how everyone is playing it - start allocating points elsewhere.
But I'd highly suggest you make alts and experiment with weapons and different suit classes instead of using your main.
Ask me how much I care and win a cookie!

Of course, I don't mean for crouching though that can be useful for snipers and getting behind cover but that's not what I mean.
When you bring up your skills and marketplace, Triangle is SHOW INFO on that skill or item. Descriptions tell you with more detail what skills unlock and what passives they give. Items will give you flavor text (to which we generally ignore except lore purposes) to give you a "general" item of what the item does, but switching tabs will tell you raw data of different attributes of that items. Damage, clip size, rate of fire, maximum clusters, spawn time modifiers, active times, cooldown times, et cetera, et cetera.
My best piece of advice is to use this often. I've seen many players come into the game and not know about this. Many vets and even recently graduated academy players already know about this but tend to forget about it.
