Get yourself a cloak, a advanced scout and a rail rifle, combat rifle, or SCR. Then slowly work your way up the core skills, ewar skills, and tank little by little. The best advice I can give you is that with maxed core skills you can turn any suit into a monster if your good. Proto suits are overhyped and you will loose money if you aim to "protostomp". It's a tough road ahead of you but with about 10M sp and not wasting your sp you will be okay. The first 3-6 months are rough.

Pretty much what BL4CKST4R said. Be sure to look at your suit's most relevant tanking skills as well. Do not forget to spec into grenades as well - a basic Flux grenade wipes shields and the blast goes through walls for destroying deployed equipment if it's close enough.

Yeah, HMG heavies are an epidemic right now. For the love of god, never approach them from the front, and avoid being seen by them if you can. Forge guns aren't exactly overpowered against infantry though, they're an anti-vehicle weapon that requires charging up and it takes a fair bit of skill to hit a moving infantryman since its projectile has travel time. Sure, there's some people that are super good at nailing those direct hits, but they're low in number and are overall much less deadly to infantry than a heavy with any HMG.

Never stop moving unless you are cloaked or have a good reason while in cover. A sitting target is a headshot victim. This goes double for uncloaked Scouts, triple for one without maxed out core skills, quadruple for one with little FPS experience.

Pick your fights carefully. When possible, always try to go for surprise. Scouts do not have as much HP as the other frames, so going toe to toe is less than ideal. When you do go toe to toe, use your superior strafing speed to throw off your enemy's aim. In extremely close quarters, jumping is actually pretty effective with a Scout because you'll break aim, probably leave their view thanks to Scout jumping height, and they'll have to spin around to find you again if they're not another Scout.

Yeah, the SP grind is rough. Thankfully, you gain 24,000 per day passively on top of whatever you're making actively. Still, I hear you. Even us 40+ million SP vets still have things to grind out, but getting the core skills high/maxed is by far the most arduous thing you'll have to do in Dust. Ambush is considered the best mode for grinding isk/SP because of its fast match turnover. You can do multiple Ambush matches in the time it would take a Skirmish or Domination to finish, getting more SP overall and much more isk since the isk payouts between Ambush, Skirmish, and Domination are all very close.

Once you have a fair bit of isk, consider doing Factional Warfare while you wait for SP. Factional Warfare Loyalty Store equipment all requires fewer ranks in their relevant skill to use, with the exception of the Specialist weapons. It can be a good way to get better gear faster than you normally would, but FW is all Skirmish.

Join a corporation too, there are a few out there specifically for newbies. It helps to have a community of people to talk to, squad with, and ask questions to. Just avoid duna corp, that's just a scam corp that likes to sucker in newbies for isk tax farming.

How about I give a little more constructive advice:

1: Find a corp, and squad up.
2: Dropsuit upgrades are critical. Anything that reduces CPU/PG costs or upgrades the CPU/PG of a dropsuit is CRITICAL. Minimum level should be 3 ASAP.
3: Specialize. Pick a suit class and a weapon, then get that suit, weapon set and your preferred equipment (and your core skills) up quickly as you can. Once you are able to run ADV sets consistently you are in a good spot.

Amarr/Gallente dropsuit skill priorities:

Weapon to 5, proficiency 3, all related skills to 3.
Dropsuit Electronics and Engineering to 5 as soon as you can bring yourself to grind.
All armor skills to 5
One or two equipment skills.
A sidearm.
Grenades to 3.
Dropsuit (Assault, scout, sentinel or logistics) to 3-5 depending on how much you love it.

Caldari dropsuit skill priorities:

Weapon to 5, proficiency 3, all related skills to 3.
Dropsuit Electronics and Engineering to 5 as soon as you can bring yourself to grind.
All Shield skills to 5
One or two equipment skills.
A sidearm.
Grenades to 3.
Dropsuit (Assault, scout, sentinel or logistics) to 3-5 depending on how much you love it.

Minmatar Dropsuit skill priorities:

Weapon to 5, proficiency 3, all related skills to 3.
Dropsuit Electronics and Engineering to 5 as soon as you can bring yourself to grind.
All armor OR shield skills to 5 Recommend Shields
Weapon Upgrades 5
One or two equipment skills.
A sidearm.
Grenades to 3.
Dropsuit (Assault, scout, sentinel or logistics) to 3-5 depending on how much you love it.
Biotics, Cardiac Regulation and Kinetic catalyzation as high as you want. Minmatar go fasta.


Forge Gun survival tip: Don't stand still. Think of it as an antitank sniper rifle.
HMG survival tip: Engage from OUTSIDE 40 meters. The weapons are much less efficient past that, and heavies should be hiding from people outside that range, not engaging. if you can keep a heavy spamming his trigger you can force an overheat, where his gun seizes and jams for about ten seconds. It sucks badly.

Ghost means the way of the Minja.

He'll teach you how to creep up on heavies and whisper sweet nothings into their ear while you slit their throats.

Just remember, if they see ya, yer dead. If they don't see ya, they're dead.

Make sure your passive SP is activated on the character you want. I'd actually suggest making an alternate PSN ID and another Dust account on it, leaving your main account for awhile and letting the passive SP do the work (You get around 30K or so SP every 12 hours I believe). Taking this route will allow you to try new things and get used to the game, plus, if you want to rinse and repeat after burning through the starting 500K SP, you can transfer whatever Isk you've got to your main account, thus allowing you to both test things and make Isk.

There really isn't much in the way of advice though that hasn't already been mentioned. Dust is a very slow game, progression wise, and you won't start seeing major improvements before around three to four months of play. I know that sounds horrible, but the game is pretty addicting, and the SP events have been plentiful lately, so it's not all that bad if you actually like the game. I would recommend putting single levels into certain items though. Combat and rail rifles are really good, even at basic level (12SP each). Scout suits are unfortunately a major SP sink, so it's going to take awhile to really get into them. You're probably looking at one of the most SP intensive roles in the game.

What suit are you wanting by the way? You mentioned Nova Knives, so I'd assume Minmatar, but if you've done any forum lurking, you're probably aware that the other suits are generally considered better.

welcome to the game. soem game modes/maps will have more prefferance for a type of suit then others.. expect scouts and heavys more in tight urban maps and single cap point matches.. where in ambush and multi cap point matches you may see more medium suits
i would suggest a few things like getting standard equipment weapon suit and tank first
ie..

racial dropsuit type 3 then onto the "profession" of your choice ie.. amarr medium 3 -> amarr assault 1 (easyest suit for a new player to get into dust with due to nice high eHP and fitting slots)

basic core skills are
-armor upgrades 1 ->armor plates 1 ->armor rep 1

-shield upgrades 1 -> shield extension 1
(dont bother with shield recharging or regulation till later if your going to shield tank)

-dropsuit core upgrades 2 -> nanocircuitry 1(suggested for injecters[rez+nice war point gain] and hives[ammo, good for keeping yoruself supplied in fights]) this opens up more options for utility and War Point gain aswell as ease of fitting equipment/moduals

weaponry is a little trickier, depends on your playstyle for the "main weapon" which you shoudl try the militia versions to find which you like best/perform best with..

-weaponry 3
-hand held weapon upgrades 1
-light weapon Op 1 to 3 -> weapon of choice + Swarm for anti vehicle
-sidearm 2 -> sidearm of choice (SMG or Magsec currently best)
-explosives 1 -> grenades 1 as that will open up normal damage , "Flux" and Anti vehicle grenades.

after you have all this you will be rocking a nice standard Medium suit of your racial choice(psst go amarr) and standard gear costs less PG and CPU then militia gear

this all in all this should take maybe 1m SP and like 1.5m to 2.5m isk.

medium suits are the cheapest to get into by maybe 50,000 SP and are somewhat versitile on the battlefield..
once you are settled into a medium suit role you can expand from there into scout suits.. which take heavy sp to be good or Heavysuits "commando" and make use of your swarms and hives and light weapon"rifle" so you can feild both at the same time or dump another 260,000sp into weapon 5 and heavy weapons 1 and HMG1 and go the sentinel route with the slow moveing big gun go ra-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta... and then later PRRRRRRRRP...

New players have to face suits with over 1000 hp....
with guns that deal upto 30% less dps without dmg mods on either suits.
Against guns that deal upto 25% of their suit hp in single bursts (CR) or 1 shot them (SCR, Sniper, forge) or can 5 shot them from 100m (RR).
Not to mention their sidearms are pathetic in comparison to ishukone assault smgs.
As a result of poor skill implementation they are not only visible, but also blind to enemies approaching, (EWAR)


On top of all this they can't enjoy vehicle roles as their tanks stand no chance (ion cannons, particle cannons, XT missiles, ALL INSTALLATIONS, OP SWARMS + IAFG)

And they can't even learn to ads or ds because of terrifying forgeguns and dead easy to use instakill swarms (SOON tm)

So what can a newb do in dust?

Well they have the special privilege of being meatshields and an easy 50 Wp + another 50 if they get picked up by a dirty needle.

BTW all new players should put 1 point into uplinks, 2 into nanohives and 1 into repair tools just to get their warpoints going while they dont know how to fight.

2) Once inside your 'Merc Quarters' press L1. Scroll down to "Corporation."

3) Then, from the list of "My Corporation," "Search," "Create Corporation," choose the 2nd option - - "Search."

4) Click Left on your controller's D-pad, then click Up on the D-pad, then click Right. A search box will appear.

5) In the search box type "Goonfeet" and wait.

6) Once Goonfeet appears in the list, click the "X" button on your controller. A list will appear of "Show Info," "Apply to Corporation," and "Give Money."

7) Choose the second option - - "Apply to Corporation." In your application, write simply: "I <3 Kane Spero."

8) If they reject, go to your character menu and create a second character and repeat steps 1-7.

9) If they accept, find Breaking Stuff in your newly created Corporation Chat Tab (you may have seen him on the forums, even in this post - - he's oh-so-friendly) and remind him of your situation. [You may access the corporation chat tab by clicking the "Select" button while in your Merc Quarters."]

10) Tell members of Goonfeet that you'd like to learn everything there is to know about Dust. This includes skills, fitting, and corporation roles. In particular, you'd like to learn how to manage your Corporation's Wallet.

11) Once you gain access to this, I will leave you to decide how to proceed.

7 is not a trap. It is how one becomes a part of corporations in Dust 514. A corporation is community of players. Goonfeet is a great place to start because they're so amazing. Feel free to read their inspirational corporation description: http://evemaps.dotlan.net/corp/Goonfeet.

Nonetheless, if you'd like to merely test step 7: when you turn on Dust, before accepting your character choice, scroll to the right and click create on one of the other two empty places. Go through the same motions you did with ISAAC35 - - of course, with a new name. After this, you may complete the steps as described.

As for your question, I am unable to asses Goonfeet's feelings about Dead Space. Perhaps one of their adepts may provide you with an answer. Nonetheless, my suggestion is: get over Dead Space and get with Kane Spero. Right now he's decease. But, like Jesus Christ himself, I suspect Kane'll resurrect sometime in the near future to spread his awesomeness throughout the Dust community.

You gotta upgrade your passive scan radius, and if the red dot is moving slower behind cover, it's a heavy. Flank and gank. It's the only way to take them on with nova knives unless they suck.

join a corporation that can help you learn everything you need to know before you put any SP into skills. gaining SP is a huge grind so you do not want to waste it.

Don't get too excited stabbing heavies. Most of the heavy players now are noobs, if you find a heavy from a bigger corp he'll likely send you to the respawn screen. Focus on light and medium suits, let the heavies be. You'll want to start tackling heavies with adv scout and adv knives

ISSAC, don't follow our advice---don't listen to us. Most of us on this forum are lousy players at Dust... LOUSY, LOUSY, LOUSY players at this game (YES, me too, often times).
Dust is INTENDED to be mean on New players, punishingly mean, and we were all crushed and trampled under this game, each in her own way... but mostly due to preconceived fps ideas we carried in the front door with us. Lots of us who consider ourselves "successful" STILL don't know how poorly we're playing this game, and how SO much better we could be if we only stopped treating this like "the olther fps" we played. The advice we're giving you now,... we don't even know if it will help you---it's only the path we think WE should have taken to successfully avoid the beating we took when we started the game. I like Crimson's advice, but Isaac, any of these tips may just make you blow your hard-earned SP on a path you won't realize you regret until 3 months from now.

You've already splurged SP and ISK on fancy knives... How do YOU know you want to be a scout (assassin) doing Ninja kills?
Lots of players have found Ninja killing in Dust nowhere as satisfying as other skills and "pimped-roles" they created for themselves in this game, weird customized roles that allow them to kick the arse off other players still trying to just be a "medic" or "knife-assassin". Dust is like a blob---no distinct promises, and all your choices are at risk.

You have an advantage over most (maybe all) the players who posted here---because you're not a previous FPS gamer, so you are free-minded with no prejudicial expectations brought in from other fps games. LOL, right now you're actually better than us.

So seriously, DON'T spend any more ISK and SP, reaching for weapons and Scout suits. Nope! Play this game on the CHEAP--
1--Use ONLY enough of your SP only to unlock each weapon you might like. Spend just enough to TRY into it,...don't BUY into it.
2--Use ONLY enough of you ISK to shop in the MILITIA martketplace. Smart Veteran players STILL buy from there.
3--Use ONLY the free suits that are already in the dropsuit menu of your living quarters. Live like Ebeneezer Scrooge, don't laugh!

These three laws let you just have fun with the game, if you decide you want to be just a weekend casual visitor.
And these lawas will protect your assets if you decide you like the game so much you want to be an addict for 6 months, and learn what's up with this game.

The New Player Experience is an issue that we have been struggling with for a long time. It has gotten better, but as you have pointed out, it has a long way to go.

You want to get a suit before filling out any of your core skills? Everybody did that when Uprising 1.0 first came about, then cried that they screwed up and wanted a respec. Something like that doesn't garner a respec. That's just stupid skill planning.

This takes many months of grinding, nevermind hours.

Some assorted information:

Minmitar Scouts suits have a bonus to Nova Knife damage. They are also the fastest suit.

Racial bonuses are based on the level you have skilled into the suit of a particular race, not what race your character is.

The only effect your CharacterGÇÖs race has is which Star System (Local Chat) becomes your home (there are 12 per race), and what racial dropsuit your starter suits will be based on.

Alt is indeed an abbreviation for Alternative Character.

Learning Coalition is a chat channel where you can ask questions in game. At the bottom of your channel list is a + sign, which will bring up a dialog box where you can type in the name of a channel you want to join.

I have guides for everythingGǪ except being a Scout. Sorry, always meant to write one but I never got around to doing the research.

Onslaught Inc is a cool Corp. I look for squads in their public chat often (I usually play as Crash Gaden). You made a decent choice there. I run a training Corp, but you can still access most of the services I provide through the Learning Coalition chat channel while remaining a member of Onslaught.

Get a second Email address and create a second PSN account, then create a second DUST account so that you will have a second character collecting passive Skill Points. Take the time to try to come up with a cool and unique name. If it takes you a few days or a week to find one that is not taken that is fine, it is not your main account, although if you get a good name I bet it will become your main account. If you play a lot and you reach the weekly active skill point cap, you can switch to your second character. If you want to try a different play style, while keeping your main focused on one role, use your second character.

The Cloaking Device is camouflage, not invisibility. Think Predator. It only makes you invisible in certain lighting conditions, or if the other guy has a low res TV. That being said, if I am hunting you down and I lose track of you for a second it is harder to find you again, so it does help in escaping if you combine it with other diversion techniques. Also, with the Cloak you are almost invisible when you are standing still. All that is visible when you are still is a slight wave in the air like hot air over a sun backed highway. However, I have killed Scouts when they are Cloaked and standing stillGǪ I have an eye for detail.

While most people will tell you to train your core skills first, and they are right most of the time, in your case you are doing it correctly. For your play style of choice you need the Cloak bonus. You need the Minmatar Scout suit, a good Nova Knife, and a Cloak. You can actually do it without the Cloak, but the cloak makes it easier. While getting more Armor/Shields from core skills will help, you are mainly trying not to get shot at in the first place. For Electronics and Engineering (CPU/PG), train as needed to fit what you want to fit.
