please read more so that you at least SOUND like you know what your talking about
http://www.gamasutra.com/category/design/
this is one of my favorite resources of old it has a backlog of TONS of articles / blogs / and words of wisdom from some of the best there ever has been and its a great place to start really learning what game design and balance is all about
heres a good one from richard garfield, someone whos games and writings have taught me alot about how to design and play
http://gamasutra.com/view/news/181326/Magic_The_Gatherings_Richard_Garfields_strategies_for_game_balancing.php
**** it just read anything richard garfield writes, he doesnt always hit the mark in his games but his writing is damn insightful.

another article that i thought had some really good insights
use this as a stepping stone and search out more.
brought to you by the co-author of the Origins TCG wich sadly could never go to market due to wizards of the coast holding the copyright on anything consisting of a deck of cards assembled from a pool of available cards in a set and refusing to licence the copyright to us

Ironically Alpha MtG was banned from tournaments pretty early on because of how imbalanced it was and how players could black lotus into dark rituals into drop a card (I forget the last bit of the combo sadly) to pretty much guarantee victory turn one. Now serious tournaments fix this by restricting cards to the latest editions which are meticulously balanced towards one another. In magic, when you pull cards from any edition, as fun as that can be, that's where you run into many of the broken ridiculous combos.
That said, I absolutely agree with him on working hard to prevent dominate gameplay. I'm always trying to figure out myself what seems out of place and champion its change regardless of if it hurts me. I think a game with diverse strategy = a fun game. But I also run myself as a jack of all trades master of none so I suppose in that situation I am quite biased. I want everything to be viable for something, even flaylocks! |

another awesome article i read way back when
http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/mr11b
obviously when designing a card game alot of my original research and inspiration came from the design of other card games but that doesnt mean it doesnt apply to games like dust
there are timmys, johnnys, and spikes in dust as well

That was an interesting article. I would have to say I'm probably Johnny/Timmy, I like to think of creative ways to win and hate using other guides but I do like to pull off crazy wins. Hell some of the most fun that I have in this game is constantly rebuilding 30 suit layouts to play with. I absolutely cannot stand the Spike mindset, I don't understand what the point of playing a strategy oriented game if you are simply going to copy-cat another player's strategy. |

im getting more trolly latily, it must be all the "this is OP" "that is OP" talk latily and my anoyance that most people describing something as OP have no idea what it means to have an overpowered thing in a game and how to identify when something is overpowered or not.
this post is a little of both.
mostly because the ignorant ones wont bother with the reading and will continue on their way, and the ones actually interested in game design, balance, and learning from games will take the reading to heart and get something out of the links ive shared.
so i win either way, and well so does everyone else lol

Will check out the links for sure. Have read some of Garfield work as well as a lot of Mark Rosewater weekly article on making magic.
For quick little insights to game theory and design check out Extra Creditz. While it may not be as in depth, it is worth having it playing in the background while cruising the forums
