This right here disgusts me on so many levels I'm not even going to respond to it. I should've known the Dust forum was not a place to discuss QUALITY GAMES.
Slow down, man!
I think metroid has some fantastic games in its history. I'm just not convinced that they represent strong character development. The comment I made here is referring to the first metroid, where the ending reveals that the hero is actually a woman. That was ahead of its time, but they killed it by then showing that she's got a great body, which just fell back into the all so common stereotypes of video games. But this is just beside the point really because even if they had just left it as "the hero is a woman", I still wouldn't call that deep character development, even for that era.
I would say the same for the other metroids I have played: great games that are very well designed in true nintendo glory, but I never saw strong character development. Now, I admittedly haven't played all of the metroids and have never completed any of them, so I may be missing something.
In short, if you disagree, please explain. I'd love to hear your rationale.

Samus Aran is a God. That's her ******* character development.
Depending on whether or not you choose to scan down all the lore in the Prime series, it gives not only Samus a deep sense of character but YOU a sense of BEING her character.
The way she saved the entire Luminoth race in Echoes still sends chills down my spine. How the entire Galactic Federation was practically in awe at her presence, how she saved the entire ******* human race through sheer will.
In Metroid, the story is what makes Samus's character. You don't see her from a third person perspective, you ARE her.

boy you can go **** yourself, for real, you have NO idea what you are talking about i guaran ******* tee you most of the people who played Metroid Prime were teenagers and adults NOT kids, most of the people who played Donkey Kong Country Returns were ADULTS, and about half of the people who play Pokemon XY are young adults and teens, and adults have always loved Zelda And I'm pretty sure hating on Kirby is a mortal sin. Yes the beginners levels look childish, but as you continue playing the difficulty gets increasingly difficult.
Adults definitely play them. Me and a number of friends that are all in the 30-45 year old range still play Nintendo. I hate the kiddie graphics at times, but I can't deny that Nintendo knows how to design a really fun game, so I keep playing them. My kids got a Wii for Xmas this year and I played Mario Galaxy for the first time. I lost count of the number of times I said out loud in amazement how brilliant the game concept and design are. AND, the kiddie graphics mean my 4 and 6 year old can watch me play it. First time in 20 years that the kiddie graphics didn't bother me. |

I only played the first 20% of the first Prime, so I never got far enough in the series to see that. Sounds cool though.

Yeah but the Last of Us detracted way too much from the zombie aspect and made itself look way too much like Batman Arkham Asylum. The nail in the coffin for me was not being able to go back and play earlier levels with the flamethrower and all the upgraded weapons. Real disappointment. I wish I could've tried the online co op but I was only renting it and you need a pass code.
They honestly could've included the story-related parts with humans and just added MORE ZOMBIE KILLING LEVELS in between. Like there was a huge opportunity in the Pittsburgh level for them to expand upon but they didn't.

I'm not going to lie that it will make shooter oriented gamers cringe, though. Locking on targets makes it easy mode sometimes. Although I heard if you buy the Trilogy pack, they added the Wii remote aiming mechanic to the first 2 games which would greatly improve the FPS aspect.
In Metroid, it's more about dodging incoming damage and letting the Power Suit take care of telling you where to shoot.
We can blame the Japanese for this... most of them get motion sickness from playing FPS.

Haven't played it yet. Figure I'll pick it up cheap once I finally get around to buying a ps4 (might as well have the better graphics).
Seems like they missed an opportunity for easy re-playability by not allowing people to replay some action scenes with upgraded weapons.

Defiance looks terrible... and that's coming from someone who likes DUST...
In all seriousness though, people like different stuff. The cartoony style may really appeal to some people, and that's cool. It would suck if all games had the same look and feel. Lots of people love League of Legends and Hearthstone, and I don't personally see the appeal at all. That doesn't mean they're stupid, just that they have different taste than I do. I just hope CCP doesn't borrow anything from Defiance for Legion.
Best PvE idea ever!

1. Its a hell of lot more fun than Dust
2. Weapon Mods
3. PVE
4. Bigger battles. Not 16 vs 16 its as many as we can cram into it the battle. I have been in one battle where 40+ players where holding a point against an onslaught of enemies. Total enemies killed in battle was in the hundreds.
5. No stupid blueberries
6. People actually are playing
7. Side quest
8. Vehicle lock. Its yours no one can take it
9. I can drive a Mad MAXX style Charger
10. Actual hit detection
Do I have to continue or do you get the point. The only reason I still come to forums is the hopes Dust someday becomes better than it is.

Recap of halo- so basically you have the covenant who.at first is trying to release an anchient power and master cheid has to stop them. Well he doesn't succeed and the flood (which is basically space zombies) are released. So now the covenant wants to destroy the flood with the 7 halo rings which form a giant weapon which stops the flood. Sounds good well wrong it stops thw flood by destroying its food source (if you haven't guessed it its sentient life). So master cheif destroys the first ring then proceedes to destroy 2/3 others. Tahts basically up until 3 which is the last part of the main story i played. If you couldn't tell the covenant have been at war with humanity for centuries now.

This is also worth a read. It's arguable that science fiction began with the cavemen paintings, in my opinion.

More people have watched aliens, it's also considerably more recent. That's why I used it as a point of reference. I didn't say it was the genesis of space sci fi.

story in online gaming is meh.. once you play through a story about 100 hours or much less then online game has to have something else besides story to make it mass appealing.. take SWTOR it's whole selling point was it was a story based MMO which was pretty fail.. they put too much stock into romancing an NPC and not enough into actual gameplay or meaningful PVP, by meaningful I mean a place that lures both carebear an PVPer some sort of special resource is collected in a PVP zone that drives an economy, not just some reward points to spend in a special PVP reward store.. scripted story in MMO is pretty pointless, story in all my gaming annoys me after Wing Commander 3 was about the last decent story imo.. i dont need bad voice acting which is the standard these days to drive my online gaming.

Still can't really believe that you'd put the likes of Donkey Kong forward as an example of character development. I simply don't believe character development is possible in side-scrolling platformers, they just scream 'These aren't even supposed to be real people!'. That also applies to the more 'mature' indie platformers for PC. Can't people just be happy to play for the gameplay without making out that a game with a kid with a head like a watermelon is some kind of cinematic masterpiece? /off topic rant |
