That is pretty much how I play. If we need av I'm the av, if we need logi I'm the logi, if we need a heavy, I'm the heavy, if we need a counter sniper I'm the counter sniper etc. etc. Majority of the players will spam one fit over and over regardless of whether or not it's useful in the current match. I had to explain that to a squadmate once when he laughed at me having 30 fittings. It's not that I'll die 30 times in a match I've never died that many times in a match, it's preparation. If something is happening and I need to change my strategy drastically, I have a fit for that. QFFT.
Most smurfs are to stupid to realize this. They keep coming in with the same damn fits, get slaughtered, wonder why it's not working, then give up and go snipe.
If you see something that need's doing, then do it. Don't wait for your stupid teammates. Adaptability is everything in this game.

And please don't tell them to use that **** militia av fit that can't kill a decent tank even with 5 people. Respectfully, I disagree. This is exactly what Militia fits are for -- it's better to bring in a low-level relevant mil fit than an irrelevant proto fit most of the time.
On this toon J4yne, he's primarily a logi, but I have a number of fits that are completely mil -- Cal forge gun, for instance, scout fittings with uplinks, and some mil tank and DS fittings. Granted, my mil forge fitting is nowhere near as effective as my Prof 5 Kaal forge fit on my heavy toon Punch, but it's still better than spawning in with an irrelevant fit. If more mercs weren't afraid to switch out when necessary, a bunch of low-level fits suddenly become effective, due to force multiplication.
I think that most mercs think that when the going gets tough, they need to start spawning in with their best stuff. But that's not always the case.
The most important thing to develop in this game is situation awareness, something which (I personally think) has been lost in the last 6 months or so after Fanfest, when a lot of beta vets decided to move on. 'Situation awareness' is the in-the-moment awareness of how the enemy team is currently kicking your ass, and what needs to be done to effectively counter it. Development of this skill is the most important asset to acquire -- it frequently (not always) beats gear. The reason is that it allows you to frequently get the drop on the enemy, because they either weren't aware of the counter, or are too engrossed with protostomping 'bloodlust' to be able to switch gears in time to realize what is happening and counter back. It's also not an easy thing to acquire, because it's easy to get lost in the heat of battle or frustration -- but the skill allows you to step out of that and examine objectively what the current situation is, and how to improve it. It is, honestly, the most valuable skill to have.
I'm basically talking about the ability to outplay your opponent. I know it may seem impossible when you are getting stomped, but it is possible -- when the enemy is trying to overrun you with vehicles, I've spawned crappy mil tanks and taken them out, before they even knew what hit them. I've flanked better equipped squads in mil fittings, and been able to take a few with me -- and my gun game is by no means the best; it's all due to flanking and surprising the enemy when they least suspect you.
If you are getting stomped, try anything else, even if you think it's crazy. Anything is better than spawning in with the same damn fitting you know won't work. If half the people who give up and snipe instead started playing with classes outside their comfort zone, this game (and everyone's experience of it) would improve greatly.
