First of all, I'm sorry if this in the wrong section.
How does the smg compare with the light weapons, specifically the combat rifle? I ask because I want to fit knives in my primary slot so that I can access them quickly from cloak. The weapon wheel is just too faffy. Obviously I can't put the Combat Rifle in my sidearm slot, so I'm asking how does the smg compare with it? Is the range and dps similar (for the acr)? Is the smg viable to use as a sort of 'light weapon in a sidearm slot'? Does anybody have any experience with using the smg as a main? If so, how does it work for you? Is it as effective as a light weapon?
Thanks!

Things may have been tweaked recently, but from my experience the SMG is a buzzsaw. smg/knife fits are pretty effective.

In my experience, an assault SMG is a solid CQC weapon, but it simply doesn't have the range of any of the rifles. I assume you'll be using sidearm damage mods, so your SMG should tear people up at close range.. The DPS of the two is fairly comparable, just remember you're giving up ~20-25m in effective range by swapping out an aCR in favor of an SMG. During the sidearm event, I used a dual assault SMG fit to good effect. You won't have much diversity in the range you can engage targets from (close and closer), but the SMG works fine as a main weapon inside compounds, closed sockets, etc. |

If you're using knives, having a longer range weapon is better. If you're close enough and you're spotted, you'll want a better secondary than an SMG.

If you want a more reliable weapon at range, use the Magsec. It functions similarly to the SMG but has better range. Downsides are the charge up time, shallow clip, longish reload, and higher fitting requirements. |

SMG's will always be my go to weapon. Went 25/0 on a match yesterday with them and 5 knife kills.
The key is knowing the effective range. Don't try to outperform rifles at distance. I see that all too often. Also watch out for Amarr sentinels. Their resistances can surprise you if you don't have high proficiency to counteract it.
I prefer to keep SMG in primary though. In a pinch its easier to switch to. I don't want to be surprised and have to cycle out the knives first.
Edit: All this is map dependant though. You'll never catch me on Manus Peak with SMG's

If you get your SMG SS up to level 5 you will have decent range with the Assault variants. You may not be able to kill someone at extreme range but you can back them off and evade. |

I run nova knives and smg as my main fit on my min scout. As long as you upgrade them both fully with profi skills to 5 and the smg sharpshooter skill to 5 it is very deadly at range. It has a lower effective range then the cr but its just as deadly.
My main fit usaully looks something like this
Minmtar Scout MK.0
proto nova knives proto assault smg flux nade
1 complex shield extender 1 complex side arm damage mod 1 complex range/persion mod ( forget which goes on the shield side )
1 complex dampner 1 complex feroscale armor plate ( little extra hp with no movement penelity ) 1 advanced reper
1 adv r/e 1 adv/proto cloak
with this build i can usually see every thing and hide from eveything eWAR related, while having a little extra hp and doing great damage with both my weapon.
Before anyone says i can't fit all that proto stuff i have maxed out fitting skills, and if i wanted to i could fit a advanced flux nade on my suit for the shield tankers. |

I've actually found the SMG has surprisingly good range when aiming down the sights. I mean the best way to see is to try out a Standard one yourself and see if performs how you like. |

Thanks! firstly SMG is a great weapon but only the assault variants are worth useing but they are at L4 and L5 but NEED sharpshooter to tighten the spread and gain some effective range..it has a sight unlike magsec which only has ironsights.
magsec is the Cheaper(SP) alternative with more dps then standard (non assault) SMGs at L1 L3 and L5.. needs less SP spent as it already has long range and tight spread.. only thing it lacks is a Scope/sight. costs less CPU but slightly more PG then SMG
hope this helps

Breach smg is my go to sidearm. Slower rof comes out to higher accuracy. Less spray & pray, more shots on target.

Breach is ok but the slow RoF is quite a draw back, while you hit me with 1 bullet i can hit you with 3-4-5 bullets in the same time as your 1. so the damage is quite different in the long run. |
