Legion development team is currently under the delusion they can create a quality competitive project that has nothing unique going for it, and a much smaller staff and budget than other AAA teams.
Basically, they are attempting to direct the creation of Legion from a marketing point of view instead of as actual game designers. This is why it will fail. Going with Himiko here... a thing I usually don't do...
But you can see why it's still tempting, right, to try to make that game? Capsuleers barely care enough to drag themselves to their PCs to play EVE Online. OK, I kid, but looking at the recent numbers posted by Bungie (self reported, sure) for their Destiny Beta is kind of astounding. Then look at peak concurrent users for EVE Online over the last five years. Make that plateaued concurrent users.
Every time anyone tries to point out that it is such an odd idea to make a science fiction FPS MMO hybrid type of game exclusively for consolesGǪ wellGǪ not really. If Dust 514 had achieved even a fraction of its lofty ambitions the question would currently be, "Why should we care about capsuleers?" It is kind of funny that when it comes to ship boarding, people will routinely respond that you can't do ship boarding, because capsuleers will actually care. The argument that ship boarding would get some EVE Player's knickers in a twist and boo, hoo, hoo, you have no idea how hard a landlord has to work to make ISK renting out systems to null bears for rattingGǪ wouldn't be anything like a reason not to implement that particular style of gameplay. Because the EVE Universe sci fi console FPS would be driving CCP's quarterly earnings reports and we dirty Dust mercenaries would be calling the shots.
But Dust 514, as we all know, did not live up to its many promises.
And part of the reason why is that CCP seemed to be chasing those elusive massive numbers, designed Dust 514 to be the game that console players wanted to play. Built Dust 514 on the shifting sands of a marketeers dream. Instead of, as they told us they were doing, building an actual sand box in which we, the players could build castles and try to fulfill our own dreams.
As long as Legion is also being built as an answer to the questions "What do players like? What will they spend money on?" Legion will also turn to dust.
It doesn't really matter what capsuleers think. They are no more or less special than any other group of players that play any other game.
If Legion is designed to be a great game, in its own right, then anyone that plays it will embrace or dismiss the game on its own merits. Sure, it should be true to EVE Online and a fitting addition to that game universe. Yes, people who have dedicated themselves to EVE can offer some great insight as to whether or not Legion is that fitting addition to EVE Online. But even there, you will get a lot of different opinions. Capsuleers hardly agree on whether EVE Online is true to EVE Online.
But I also agree that if Legion development is being driven by marketing, and gameplay is being built to support monetization schemes, instead of the other way around, then Legion isn't worth making. But designing Legion to give the capsuleers something to care about runs as much risk of turning it into a cobbled together hodge podge of gimmicks as designing Legion to drive the cash shop. If Legion is a decent game in its own right, then people that play EVE, as games, will appreciate that. And they will care. Whether or not I'm farting up local with pleas for air support so I can grind better salvage to sell on the player market. Capsuleer plz? |
