Dropships should be one of those persistent things in the air in DUST 514. It add's to everyone's gameplay.
But right now Dropships hurt... not a little but ALOT. 2-3 shots for most suits your down TTK is under 1 second in most cases vs infantry. That would have to drastically change to make them a consistent relevant contributing play style to DUST 514.
Dropships need that ability to tank in the air but also takes a while or some decent team work with a gunner to eliminate threats quickly. This will give Forge Gunners/SL's something to shoot at and make them a consistent viable playstyle, while giving dropships the ability to somewhat tank and exchange fire in a meaningful exchange.
This will allow dropships to act as more mobile troop transport aswell which was their intended role. To have mobile CRU's on them to stop red line activity as well as be durable enough to transport troops from one fight zone to the next.
With the way dropships are currently they are setup as roaming slayer vehicles. With little tank and alot of gank. CCP's idea was to create a hit and run mentality with dropships.
-I am saying they need to be there in the air for the whole idea of Tanks, Infantry and Air to make sense. And if that is the central premise then the burst damage potential has to go in favor of giving them staying power and relevancy in their role that this game sorely needs. See, where your wrong is that you think people will actually use ADSs as a transport ship. If it can't be used as an effective combat ship, why waste +10x the ISK on it over a throwaway MLT ship? I would agree that the STD DSs need a huge buff defense wise, but the ADS should be the glass cannon it is currently. This is also the reason why I think logistics ships are a waste unless they come with some serious buffs and new features to vehicle logistics. Its role as is could be fulfilled by a 30k MLT dropship. Some ideas I've had are the Sky-Hook Equipment and this cluster of ideas.
I do believe that the ADS's current role is sound as an all gank no tank slayer vehicle. if you want something killed you call over your friendly ADS and he beats the **** out of anything and everything.
The transport dropships need a buff however, to be an all tank no gank vehicle, if you want to get from point A to point B, you ask for your friendly Transport vehicle over.
The transport dropship needs a few buffs however to do so. perhaps a bonus to mods that keep it alive, much like the logi lav had the resistance bonus. they need to be able to stay put for a long period of time while providing cover fire to keep large advances at bay. then pick up the troops and fly to the next location.
to keep the Transport dropship balanced, they need to be slow, and unmoving, AV should not knock it around as much, and takes a while to bring it up to speed. it would be a target to many forms of av, and the ADS would take it for easy pickings. teamwork should be required to keep this behemoth of a ship in the sky.
