I would love to see this but giving away unlimited weapons of any kind could get ugly.
We should get a race reset and have to make that choice one time. Newbies should be given 100 of each suit and be forced to select their race after they leave the academy then receive unlimited of the race they select like normal.

I don't see how having unlimited access to other race's starter fits it could possibly get ugly; they're just starter fits with just militia weapons. Seems like an unjustified fear.
New players shouldn't be locked in by race.

I would like to pursue this further, more racial flavor in sidearms f.ex. and sharing of fits. I would also like to name them something more distinctive, in line with the "Federal Marine, etc." LP convention.

Rattati was always Gallente xD
But Gallentean tech has been needing a boost just as much as Amarr.

Get more creative, like the way vehicles are named, or ships are named in EVE (I don't play though)
Minmatar - warrior
Amarr - paladin
Gallente - something greek-ish
Caldari - something Japanese-like, or named after an animal

I saw that thread, some amazingly cool names. We considered it at some point, but for new players, what the hell is a Warrior, Artificer etc. Thinking about it, maybe something cool we could do with that are the packaged fits, like the Mauler, but racially flavored, standard grade bpos that can't be changed. Maybe getting ahead of myself here...

That seems like a bad idea. New players are going to get confused. They're going to look at it and think:
"Oh, I can't remove the gun from this setup and put it on another one. I guess setups aren't actually customizable."
Instead, I'd reccomend giving them a normal fitting, and 20 copies of it. |

Each race needs a "specialty" starter with one of the racial non-assault rifles, like an Amarr "Imperial Suppressor" starter with the Laser, Min with MD, Gal light frame with SG or PlC, perhaps a Cal heavy with militia forge, all with appropriate lore AND role-based names. That would be amazing for new players and add more tangible incentive to explore the skill tree. Hell, that'd even get me a little wet from the sheer geekdom and I've been here for ages.

I think a Heavy with a Forge Gun would actually make for a more sensible AV starter fit than the one we currently have.
The Forge Gun *always* works, in contrast to the swarmer. |
