Please hear me out, I'll be quick. I'd really like to see the RoF drop as the HMG heats up, building up to it locking up when overheated. This would cause heavies to have to keep an eye on their heat gauge and let off the trigger more often to avoid loosing DPS. This would actually make the heavy class a more skill oriented class, forcing it to closely manage that heat.
As for specifics... I suppose at around 25% heat buildup the HMG starts to loose RoF, dropping down to about 30% of it's maximum (around 600rpm) right at full heat buildup.
My questions:
- Is this doable without a clientside update?
- Would this be an acceptable change for the real heavies out there who aren't just out there running a fatsuit because it's so easy to rack up kills in it right now?

Cat Merc wrote:Without heat up the HMG can fire for around 11 seconds. Considering how long it takes for the overheat, I assume it takes 9 seconds to overheat.
How about reducing that to 5 seconds to overheat? That's how long an AR can fire, and if I can take down a heavy in that amount of time, you can do that TWICE (HMG has double the DPS of an AR). Right around 9 seconds, yes. I don't think you even can overheat the Gastun's.
The reason I requested a damage dropoff effect is because simply adjusting the heat build up does more damage to new players than older players since (iirc) the operations skill directly effects heat build up. Can't look it up atm to verify that though, let me know if I'm wrong.
Giving the HMG damage dropoff encourages being smart as opposed to hosing down everything. It encourages using cover, moving and firing in spurts instead of being a stationary Gatling turret attached to a rep tool.
It also allows the heavy, when he/she needs to, to keep firing as the weapon goes into the danger zone when in trouble while still firing an absolute minimum 600RPM as it reaches overheat state. If the Overheat bar is 9 seconds long, 2.25 seconds into it the ROM's would gradually scale down as the bar fills up down to 600 at the 9 second mark. Imho, 2.25 seconds of 2000rpm hellfire raining on enemies in front of you should be sufficient if you are a smart player.

I do not really agree with rate of fire decrease based on heat build up but I do feel that the overheat should be reduced overall. Thank you very much. I was suggesting a RoF drop as opposed to the gun overheating faster. It would allow people to keep firing as long as they do now, but with a DPS penalty if they are not careful with their heat build up.
I'm of course open to the idea of shortening the overheat bar, I just thought this might be a better alternative to encourage smart gameplay.

I'm of course open to the idea of shortening the overheat bar, I just thought this might be a better alternative to encourage smart gameplay. I understand but I remember when heavy had a really bad overheat and the actual heavy bonus was to reduce overheat. Once they removed the suit bonus they decreased overheat. Back then that wasn't such an issue since the gun was underperforming but as it stands it majorly needs this overheat back. FoTM heavies are just pressing fire and forgetting, mowing down everyone in their way without consequence or skill involved. That skill needs to come back to the suit to reduce the abuse the suit is suffering right now. I was in an ambush yesterday where there where at least 9 heavies... That is not fun at all, specially when it was a city map. I'll support any ideas that push the HMG into balance as long as it doesn't break the HMG again, so I'm all for it. This is just an alternative that might have been more attractive to some people than a straight lockup of their gun happening sooner.
