Hello everyone,
SirManBoy here declaring my candidacy for CPM1.
MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH DUST 514
While starting off as just an occasional retreat from a game called MAG, Dust 514 has since gone on to become my #1 love in gaming. More than a year and over $600 USD invested in my character later, it still brings me an immense amount of joy and satisfaction to play this game and cap out my character each week. Much of the passion I have for this game can be attributed to the tremendous community I'm a part of as a member of Molon Labe (special shout outs to Hawkin Pete, Thor Odinson42, yruphct, ZEROBLOOM, X-eon, and Mobius Kaethis). I'm very fortunate to play with such an awesome and dedicated group of people, many of whom I legitimately consider friends.
Apart from the relationships that it's allowed me to forge, I also love Dust 514 because it soothes my itch for character development. In my opinion, Dust has done a better job than any other game I have ever played at giving me the deep character development experience necessary to express a play style perfectly suited to my personality. To play my logi character in Dust 514 is to play a role that resonates with me as a person--to be someone who routinely makes sacrifices for the betterment of others, for the good of the group.
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
I am a very happy high school social studies teacher with previous experience in real estate sales, collections, and loss mitigation for Enterprise Rent-a-Car. I currently instruct an Advanced Placement Macroeconomics course, as well as a pre-IB course called Global Studies.
MY MISSION AS A MEMBER OF CPM1
My primary mission as a member of the CPM will be to advocate for game mode mechanics that allow underdogs, players and corps alike, to find a niche in the game that makes them relevant and more competitive. For example, one of my biggest frustrations with Dust has been with the talent bottleneck that is Planetary Conquest. In its current form, PC is simply a 16-player vs. 16-player contest of who has the better gun game. Under these conditions, there is little hope for larger corps with average talent to compete against smaller corps with elite players. Other factors need to be accounted for, not the least of which is size.

I see the best in people and have the ability to work with anyone to facilitate results within any social dynamic or organization. As someone who spent many years collecting money for large corporations and who is now a public school educator, I have a vast amount of experience effectively communicating with people in sometimes difficult and contentious situations. While I could tell you about all of the big ideas I have pertaining to game play tweaks and game modes, the single greatest asset I bring to the table is my experience as a level-headed and tactful communicator who values reaching goals over appeasing egos, including my own.
I will be both the glue and the grease of the CPM. |

SirManBoy,
Glad to have you in the race. Glad to see we've got a professional educator hoping in the race. The CSM has had a couple teachers and coaches (see current CSM Mike Azariah) and it might be nice to continue the trend with the CPM.
Would you mind linking a couple of your noticeable thread posts so folks can get an idea of how you communicate?
Also, I would like to extend you an offer to come on the Biomassed podcast to talk a bit about why you would like to be on the CPM and what you would like to focus on if elected. We are on Sunday nights at 8pm Pacific Standard Time (0300 UTC). Contact me on Skype or twitter and i'll get you the details.
So...on to basic candidate questions for you:
1) Other than the forums how do you intend to collect and communicate requests, needs, POV of the community? In particular, those outside your corp / alliance.
2) What level of interaction would you like to establish between the CPM and CSM? What areas are critical for you to work together on going forward.
3) What are the top 3 Dust related changes you would encourage CCP to make for the current player base in the next few months. I'm looking for concrete examples that are realistic to achieve.
4) What aspect or features in Legion that you've heard of are you most interested in working on? What features discussed so far are you most concerned about and why? (Note: my assumption is that there will be limited initial engagement in Legion as per CCP note but will likely have increased interaction as Legion development and the relationship between CCP and CPM1 grows.)
5) In Spring of 2015, when CPM1's term is up, what would you want people to have said about your tenure as a CPM member?
Thank you for your time.

I graciously accept your offer to appear on the Biomassed podcast. I could talk Dust for hours, so I'd be thrilled to come on the program sometime. I'll be sure to contact you through the channels you've specified.
1. My current plan is to utilize Twitter, Skype, and Reddit AMAs for most of my communications with the Dust community outside of the forums.
2. I just started my EVE career about a week ago, so the thought of interacting with the CSM as a member of the CPM is quite an exciting proposition. I look forward to familiarizing myself with the members of the CSM, identifying common goals, and helping CCP create the dynamic relationship that these two games deserve to have with one another.
3. A few modest and realistic changes that I think would be well-received among the current player base include higher ISK payouts, most aspects of KAGEHOSHI's medium frame overhaul proposal, and changes to the SP capping system that allow less experienced players the option to gain more ground on 53+ million SP vets like myself.
4. My ideal version of legion will have features like Team Deploy, a player-driven marketplace, larger battles, PvE, and game mechanics that allow underdog corps to develop strategies for neutralizing and overcoming opponents who rely solely on elite FPS gun games. My biggest concerns are currently in the realm of character development and what changes are being discussed for the skill system. I actually quite enjoy Dust's current system, so I'm worried about some of the rumors I've been hearing on the forums.
5. That I served on the CPM with the same enthusiasm and passion for the game that I have as a player.
Thanks for the questions!

Hello!
Just wanted to say thats its nice to see a MAG player running for the CPM office, i was worried we had lost so many of you over the Rouge Wedding incident!
I really enjoyed your post and wanted to ask a couple of questions if i may?
firstly, i loved that you acknowledge the 'under dogs' section of the community, this is something that i have been a little concerned that so few people even saw this issue, so thanks for seeing it! my question is how would you go about petitioning change to CCP for Dust 514 on the 'under dogs' issue? What would be the key deliverables as you see it to enact change for this group?
Secondly i was really excited to see you talk about PC and how this as a game mode / concept is in need of review / overhaul, my question here would be what do you feel has been the primary downfall of PC in your opinions? was it mechanics based or was it the attitudes of players? or both? perhaps to throw in some context, what was your opinion of district locking and how do you feel it has impacted the game downstream?
Thanks for your time!

Hi CEO!
Were you MAG player as well? I have many fond memories and several friendships thanks to that game. What's more, it was MAG that made me a fan of online FPS games, so if it wasn't for MAG, I wouldn't be the devoted Dust player that I am today. To this day, I still have two large SVER decals on my 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander. HAHA
SVER Decal 1
SVER Decal 2
Now to your questions!
I have been an underdog for virtually my entire FPS career. In MAG I was a member of the Professionals [PRO], a large and extremely active clan of mostly average and below average players who used coordination, tactics, teamwork and superior numbers to regularly overcome adversaries who outclassed us, especially in terms of gun game. I started my career in Dust with the same core guys as a member of Planetary Response Organisation, but an internal rift eventually caused me and many others to break away and become the original members of Molon Labe. Something that has always bothered me about Dust is its lack of team-oriented, community-fostering mechanics. In my opinion, one of the best ways this could have been remedied would have been to have developed a team deploy system similar to the clan deploy system in MAG. There is no better way for a large group of average players to get better as a collective unit than to regularly deploy together as a team to build a chemistry and experience as a single, cohesive fighting force. Sure, such a mechanic would have been a nightmare for solo, go-it-alone types who can't be bothered with forming relationships with people and joining corps who then join alliances, but this game should have never been aimed at pleasing those types in the first place. In my experience, those kinds of players don't become emotionally invested and therefore they cannot be relied upon to provide long-term financial support or passionate and effective word-of-mouth marketing. However, had CCP given us team deploy, an outlet that fosters teamwork, excitement, loyalty, devotion, and community, the state of the game would be in a different place today, especially with respect to player retention and activity.
Now, at this juncture, I realize that team deploy simply isn't going to happen for Dust 514 on the PS3. I remember a time when devs were supposedly working on it and promising it for a future build, but that dream is dead. So what now, right? What can CCP possibly do to improve the game experience for average players who can't realistically compete with ultra rich players from elite corps with otherworldly gun games? Here are some things, given the game's current limitations, that I think need to happen for the betterment of the average Joe:
1. Higher ISK and LP payouts. 2. Better, more competitive basic and advanced suits (see Kagehoshi's medium frame proposal for a great example). 3. Another reevaluation of PC timers so that more matches are possible thus pressuring elite, land-owning corps to defend more of their territory, more often, especially with overlapping timers. This would allow alliances of lesser skilled players to zerg their way to victories against smaller, more exclusive entities that rely on their guns to currently win infrequent, easily organized 16 vs. 16 showdowns. 4. Cheaper clone packs.
Granted, these aren't revolutionary, mind-blowing changes, but I think they are reasonable, realistic, and good for the little guy. Of course, I'm always receptive to ideas presented by others who share the same sentiment. In my opinion, coming up with great ideas is less important than being someone who can recognize great ideas from others and see them through to the finish line. This community is a treasure chest of smart, talented people, and as a council member, my intention is to loot it for all it's worth. =)
The primary downfall of PC is that its mechanics have played right in the hands of this community's small, elite corps. The timers and the format have allowed highly exclusive corps to make a big impact and to experience enormous success with minimal activity or organizational stress. PC mechanics should have always favored size over skill, inclusive communities over exclusive cliques. It should have rewarded corps who recruited for quantity over quality and made it necessary for elite corps to regularly field B teams and C teams in PC battles in order to take and defend territory. Say what you want about the likes of the 2,000+ merc corp FACTION WARFARE ARMY, but their model should have paid dividends in PC.
District locking made a number of mercs from elite corps extremely rich and one way to soften the damage and address this disparity is to increase ISK and LP payouts for everyone and to make those payouts go farther by making basic and advanced suits more competitive.
Thanks for the questions, CEO!

Yes. If my legacy is that I championed improvements and changes to Dust/Legion that made the actions of the majority of players more relevant, then I would be extremely proud of my service on the CPM.
I believe that a game which focuses on the importance of numbers and the relevancy of the little guy is one that fosters community building and therefore expansion of the player base. The Dust University's, Subdreddit's, Planetary Response Organisation's, and Faction Warfare Army's of the world should have always possessed the model for success in this game, not the elite corps with highly exclusive recruiting practices. The elites are extremely important to this community, but their success needs to be scaled down in favor of a model that encourages corps to recruit and utilize large and highly diverse rosters of players. |
