Was the HMG buffed somehow to make it appear it has longer range? It's not by much - but it seems i'm hitting people almost as hard from distances as if they were up close.

Have you checked the efficiency rating to see if it stays at 100% past 30 meters?
The only thing they changed was the removal of the stunlock, which should make it feel like you're doing less damage...
idk, I saw some guy the other day go 45/10 with a C-I standard sentinel and an MH-82. Every time I tried getting close to him in my proto amarr sentinel I would die before I could even return fire from around 30-40 meters...so I have no idea what's going on.

I've noticed the same actually. Maybe 30m in game is further away than you imagine when you think of it in your head. I get insta-popped by HMG's all the time and go "wtf, from all the way over there???", then see 30ish meters on the death report and confusion ensues.
Edit: Also noticed the same while using one.

My squishy Scout routinely dies to HMG fire.
* Totally expect to get smashed at 0-20 meters. * Somewhat irritating to die at 20-30 meters. * Dying > 30 meters ... a problem, IMHO.
But at least you fatties can't glue me to the ground anymore!

There are two explanations here after doing some testing (Efficinacy rating was the same since 2 weeks ago btw, so no range increase)
1) Everyone else has less HP and aren't adapting to the hot fix yet, making HMG appear more powerful then it is vs scout spam.
2) CCP are terrible programmers and accidentally, again, trying to fix something broke something else.
My guess is that the bullet fall-out damage that gives reduced damage at range was messed with. HMG probably does closer to full damage at range then it used too.

though the burst will lose to a plain hmg every time even thou it has higher rate of fire and cost more dos'nt make since

I believe CCP mentioned that vehicle damage from HMGs were being tweaked to make them more effective, particularly against LAVs. Haven't had any tank/HMG experience as of yet...

Personally I'm thinking it's more people switching to either lower tier plates or ferroscales after the armour plate changes. I will go and double check the numbers for the HMG though just to be sure, but the general HP decrease would be what my money would be on.

If you think it's OP now, a shame you weren't around when it could easily shred people 70-80 yards out due to the sharpshooter skill.
It's a walk in the park now.
HMG is probably the only weapon I can currently say is in the right spot.

Here's My theory you space pirates. The HMG spread was so bad at 30 m pre alpha, that stunlock worked against it. Now that its gone, more movement = more random hmg spread to run into

I was a witness to that unfortunately. I swear I thought he killed me with six kin burst before the kill feed updated.
