You know, I just don't think there is anything wrong with FoTM methods. I have my complaints about aspects of the game. I think all scouts should lose an equipment slot. I retract my complaint about the scrubs who snipe from the top of the MCC. I want them to fix bugs.
All of that being said. A bunch of cloaked scouts with shotguns isn't an issue. Outside of some bugs, it's fine. I think there might be some balance issue with Heavies but that's about it. I don't even think it's bad.
I run ADV Heavy sometimes. I run Shotgun and ACR Cloaked Scout. I run Cloaked AV Scout (RE's and AV Nades). I run G-Assault with AR (BTW, it's sick. The 5% bonus per point makes the AR just plain Sick). I run a MLT Min Heavy with a MLT Armor Rep and a MLT Damage mod and a Rail Rifle. I run ADV and partial PROTO Amarr-Logi as well.
I started 30 days before 1.7. I wasted all of my skill points in the AR and then it got nerfed in 1.7. I went to RR next. I had SP limitations and someone said don't do Scrambler Rifle so I just randomly picked RR. I ran ARR until 1.8. In 1.8, my ARR was losing to the ACR 1v1 way to often to make it viable. Now I run ACR.
The problem is, as vets play, they will have skilled proto with at least 3 prof in multiple weapons. So whenever one of those weapons becomes viable again, a vet is able to pick it back up. At 22mil SP, I'm starting to hit that wall.
And before someone says "try x and see how good you are" just know I MLT forge snipe with 0 points in FG as well. I challenge myself and do silly things like any other player. BTW, I also have ran the Flaylock side arm for about 4 months straight. I only run SMG on my Swarm Fit and FG Fit.
Again, What is wrong with FoTM? Why is that even a saying? Shouldn't FoTM just be "Best Set Ups Available Now" as opposed to some condescending statement?
Is it wrong to use the mathematically best gear and set ups in addition to skill so I can win?

You are right. There is nothing wrong with using broken mechanics to "win" inherently meaningless battles others just want to have fun in.
I am sure this kind of thing didn't lead to a great many people quitting the game before they even had the chance to see its strong points.
But you go on ahead and keep doing what you are doing and needing to win at all costs, because then we will all know that you are consequently a superior human being to everyone else.

Your disgust is understandable but misplaced. Running FOTM is not inherently bad and specializing in one role and completely maxing it out leads to greater discrepancy than mixing it up. One of the fun things about this game, probably unintentional, is that the game is constantly changing. What works one build doesn't work in the next. Its not the FOTM that causes the problem, it is the matchmaking and the fact that vets can immediately go protoish in the new fotm while newer players have to start from scratch. That wouldn't be better though if vets stuck more to a few maxed out roles rather than fotm though.
Because, that's why.

Assault/Plasma Rifle was not nerfed in 1.7; just that far better weapons were added. For every other patch in Uprising, that is when the Assault/Plasma Rifle was nerfed.
Anyway, the problem is that FoTM is used to describe several things in this game compared to every other game I have played that has had a FoTM. Allow me to explain:
1. Most people will state "this is FoTM" has another way to say "this is too powerful." The problem is that not everyone means FoTM (Flavor/Fit of the Month; I prefer Flavor) as being too powerful. In other games that have a clear FoTM such as League of Legends or World of Warcraft, it might not even be the fact that something is too powerful that is causing people to go there; it just means it is popular. In League, when a champion is picked on a stream or in a tournament that has people saying "why was that picked?!" and the game goes well, it may cause a renewed interest in that champion. In the early days, Dyrus playing Singed when he was considered "barely decent" caused him to be in every game. So if you have two people, one saying "Flavor of the Month is just popular, for whatever reason" and another saying "Flavor of the Month means overpowered", you have a disconnect in communication.
2. My concern is that Flavor of the Month can make a game boring. League of Legends and DUST offers a huge amount of choice, more than a lot of other games. Between fitting, suits, champions, rune pages, masteries, and skill points there are a lot of different ways to run a character. The problem is that if something becomes FoTM, whether because it is simply the best option or just being popular, it makes the game more stagnant. One of the advantages that something like DUST has over Titan is the level of customization beyond just "10 primary weapons, 4 sidearms, 1 augmentation to each weapon, choice 2 perks from a pool of 10." That level of customization means NOTHING if there are only a few things that are used.
3. FoTM may become just how the developers begin to create the game. Jump to Season 1 League of Legends. No one has figured out "the best way" to play. You have a lot of different things happening, some successful, some not. People discover "hey, if we put the ADC with a Support and give the Support ZERO gold from kills, get items that give passive gold, and turn those items into cheap things that give an aura boost in a team, that is great!" So that is what supports did; Philosopher's Stone, Heart of Gold, Aegis of the Legion, Reverie, Randuin's Omen. Every game, always the same. Well, people figured something else out: "if we have no one else buy wards and ONLY the Support, we can save everyone a huge amount of gold!" Riot decides to add an Item that gives Free Wards to facilitate making it easier for Supports to be ward monkeys.
Enter Season 3. Supports build: Sightstone, boots, Ruby Sightstone, boots of mobility, and the rest of the income was spent solely on more wards and items to let you see the other people's wards. Boring as all hell. The developers help push the game into that direction because of how people were playing. The Flavor of the Month becomes the complete metagame. The game became stagnant as hell.
Going with your statement of: "Is it wrong to use the mathematically best gear and set ups in addition to skill so I can win?" There you are talking about things being powerful, possibly too powerful. Is it wrong for players to use it? No but it is poor game design that has made it such an obvious "you should use this and this if you want to do X." That is why people complain.
"This is B.S! This is B.S! I paid money! Cash money, dollars money, cash money!"

The problem with fotm is that it's the path of least resistance, and is most frequently used to completely destroy the fun of others. Gallente scouts are awful to deal with if you're not a scout yourself. Huge numbers of vehicles cannot be fought by non-squads of avers / vehicles. Frisbee remotes are pathetically easy and require no gungame. Heavy frames / Light frames are used simply because they offer so many advantages over other suits.
FoTM is complained about because of the frustration it causes in people who *don't* abuse it. I cannot count the number of dren scouts with cloaks, remotes and shotguns I have encountered just today, let alone in the past months.

It is a glass half full/half empty thing. If the game never changed then FOTM makes it boring and predictable, but things change, still. I kind of find it fun trying to guess what chsnges will come so I can skill into them now. I went proto swarms in 1.7 because I figured nothing was so clearly broken, CCP is going to buff the hell out of these things. That one didn't work out so well.

The AR was nerfed. They increased spray to make it practically unusable in a 1v1 strafe battle. Re read the notes for 1.7.
All of that being said. I appreciate everyone's feedback except for the first idiot (One Eyed King).
I guess my rebuttle to the complaints is that using alternate styles has a risk of causing you to die and/or lose a bit more often and I don't think there is an issue with that. I like running my Gal Assault with a Proto AR. It's actually fun doing well. Right now I'm finishing my last 4 Ratatti's Assault Aur Purchase (worth a try tbh for anyone with some extra aur). No one is going to say that is FoTM but I do well and enjoy it.
I must admit. I decided to run a basic min scout without cloak but instead with compact hives and RE's. Some HP and a complex dampener with a basic AR. Unfortunately, I was very unsuccessful but I actually enjoyed the attempt from my part. reminded me of when I skilled into min scout a the beginning of 1.8 and I had to run the basic and adv only without a cloak b/c it took up too much PG and CPU and I didn't get the proto until far after 1.8.
Anyway, nothing wrong with it. The game is unbalanced and it's not the players faults that they play the game in a selfish way. Can't blame them for wanting to win. It's more of CCP's fault and CPM's fault really (I have seen very little evidence that they argued proper balance and very few of them even play the game). Balance is the problem not FoTM IMO.

I didn't say that I don't have a problem with the unbalanced elements. Trust me, there are things I think they should do. That being said, I accept the reality that if I am a cloaked shotgun scout against another cloaked shotgun scout then how is that unbalanced? It only becomes unbalanced when I'm up against those tactical AR's people have been using lately. Not entirely sure why though.

FoTM is a problem that is a result of a larger problem. FoTM is a problem on its own because it leads to relatively stagnant, undynamic gameplay. Most everyone just uses/spams whatever the FoTM is. The larger problem is the inherent imbalanced design which allowed for the creation of the imbalances in the first place. DUST is fundamentally supposed to have a "rock-paper-scissors" balance at its core. The balance is supposed to ensure no one element is the All-Time Winner, there's always supposed to be a reasonable counter that isn't just rock vs. bigger rock. The FoTM presence is a result of that balance not existing, evidenced by ppl flocking in droves to whatever item/fitting can be calculated as the Most Often Winner.
Is this bad? yes. When gameplay stagnates, players frustrate. When players frustrate, players quit. When players quit, games die off. the end.

Using the best gear for the job makes sense if your doing PC or perhaps an FW game....
To me when I see a fit become the current flavor because it provides a clear tactical advantage and I run across it being used in pubs by a bunch of people that used to run different fits I just think:
"This dude is a scrub nugget that is compensating for poor gun-game or tactical skills"
Maybe it's fun for them and that's great but it sucks for people that are interested in another role that is less tactically viable....
These FOTM chasers are making pubs a horrible place for lower SP players and that is ultimately worse for the game.
FOTM is only a problem becaues of human nature (big surprise)....
As for King, he's a fellow scout and like us all has been abused for the better portion of a year only to now have CCP overdo it on the scout balancing and make the G-Scout such a FOTM menace while leaving the Min/Amarr in a very oddly, quasi-useless place....
I understand and relate to his bitterness.

I was wondering the same thing. Sounds fishy.
The problem with FOTM is twofold:
One, it's boring. Diversity is the lifeblood of this game.
Two, it's a marker for bad balancing. It punishes people who like to play a certain way (logi, for example) because if a specific setup is markedly superior to others, the others fade away and die. How many good logis you see running around now?
Ok, a third, reason: it's bullsh*t. A Caldari scout hiding behind a wall got off 2 shotgun rounds on me without de cloaking last night. I saw him out of the corner of my eye but he was barely even visible as a shimmer and had already fired a round as I turned. I was dead before I could return fire. My cores are maxed and I had a complex precision enhancer on my suit. That's an unfair mechanic and makes people not want to play. That's never healthy for a game.

1) I used 30 day passive since like day 10 of me playing. I have used a booster every chance I could and omega's during every event the last 4 or 5 months. Not to mention that I've easily picked up 2 mil or so after bonus pool was exhausted over the course of me starting. Can't tell you how many 1k WP ambush matches I run a week after my SP pool is depleted. It's a lot.
2) I don't think FoTM is boring. Two people with the exact same fit duking it out is a way of measuring your skill (i.e. I beat that guy 3 to 2 so I feel good about my abilities). Using a non FoTM and doing reasonably well is a sign of skill as well.
3) 100% a marker for bad balance. And you are right, there is a punishment if you decide not to play the FoTM to help in another way. This is why I actually have a lower KDR than most scouts the past couple of months. It's because I choose a harassment role as opposed to the typical scout role. Harrasement is when you take on multiple people at the same time and distract them to attract more players to a single null. When they do this it frees up the other nulls.
4) Cloaks are getting nerfed ridiculously. Every scout will have to use a complex dampener to include a Gal scout. Without it a single complex precision enhancer on any medium will pick up every scout that doesn't except for Gal. A single one on any scout suit will pick up all scouts to include the gal if they don't wear a dampener. Personally, there should only be one equipment slot AND I think there should be one less module slot. The suits are small yet hold as many modules as a heavy. I don't think that makes a lot of sense.
I run cloaked scout and uncloaked. I will adapt and the nerfing of the dampening on the cloak hurts me. I've posted other threads about this as well. To get by a triple precision enhanced proto cal scout I have to run 3 complex dampeners and be cloaked with the proto cloak. Most Cal Scouts wear two allowing me to get by with 3x dampeners and no cloak which will be fun.
Anyway, I get that there is a balance issue and agree on that. But I have to take the stand that it's not the players faults that play that way.

It's boring because you see nothing else. There's no adapting to changing tactics, no variety. No paper. It's all rock and scissors. You may like duking it out because you're a scout and are using the FoTM. I don't, so I don't. I will lose every time to the cloaked shotty scout and I will never be able to be convinced that I should be OK with 99% of people using it because there is no effective counter.

Why not? Lets take the 1.7 epidemic of RR sentinels. I'm sorry but that just screams "I need 1000eHP to be relevant." I don't respect that.
Let's go a step further. Nyain San spamming 4 tanks in ambush backed up by brick tanked slayer proto gal logis perma-scanning everyone and turning spawn camping into an art form.
