So since Legion is still a prototype we can let our imagination fly a bit. (oily drone on drone action)
Game modes, drones and the player.
Would you like to see AI Drones in Exploration mode as a form of PvE? Rogue drone invasions happening (rarely?) mid-match (PvPvE)? Rogue drone incursions as exploration / mission sites? Training drones for shooting ranges, tutorials and practice areas (with selectable "difficulty", damage (dps), damage type and drone size from light to heavy) How about a horde mode that was so often asked to be implemented to Dust?
Equipment drones, what types of drones would you like to use?
Logistics drone for added support capability? Sentry drone to aid you defend that one point you are holding by yourself? ECM/ECCM drone(s) to inhibit enemies scanners, boost yours, reduced dB Assault drone that hovers around you blasting away at enemies trying to kill you? Shield/armor drone that protects you from certain amount of damage? Stationary alarm drone that sends you a notification when it detects hostiles in X meter radius?
(Some of these ideas have already been suggested but I can't remember names so I'll apologize here for this petty thievery)

I see the potential for drones as being support tools.
If they had auto-aim features and suchlike I could see that very easily becoming a controversial and difficult to balance feature.
I know the key to Logibro's heart

Would be cool to see armor rep drones... you have a squad of 6 and it just buzzes around topping people up. Would be great for logis using single target rep tools and such.
Keep the heavy focused with rep tool while the drone tops up your light/medium frame peeps as they take damage.
Could be fun! A drone with auto targetting functionality wouldn't be too bad as long as their dps wasn't too high. |

Exploration (with some event attached e.g. no lights, traps, disease, rogue drones etc): - bases with some buildings going high up - underground bases (dungeon like) - abandoned spacestation / starbase - unknown planet or moon surface with (e.g. with bottlenecks (e.g. bridges or walls), well guarded spots or foxhole / trench battles)
Combat training - training facilities group training - training facilities weapons training
Combat defence (e.g. every engineer or scientist killed = less victory points) - manufacturing facilities - research facilities - defend the military base from drones - city invasion (would be fun, but not in short or medium term plan)
Combat attack - attack the drone base, underground base, spacestation etc
Just a few examples. |

The #1 use for Drones in Dust/Legion is the new player experience, imho. Especially as a lot of their players will likely be Eve players new to FPS who will need to learn to shoot from scratch. Training & equipment testing grounds would be an extension of this.
PvE would be good to have, but we know that CCP see their games is primarily for PvP, and PvE has never been their strong point. Expect it to be somewhat predictable, with players rapidly learning how to farm even the toughest PvE challenges.
Player-deployable drones are the most interesting area for me, but they'd need to be carefully balanced to avoid being too powerful. Scout drones with cameras & sensors that you can remotely pilot would be a really interesting addition to the game, along with weaponry designed to take them out. Battlefield information control.

Drones would make great tutorial targets and could be used in training (assuming Corporations can buy a training area) and so on.
While PVE might be predictable and missions repeat them self's but it could offer a break to the awful grind Dust currently has with pub matches.
Player deployable drones are the most interesting area for me too and I agree that the balancing has to be done with extreme care. Scout drones like you described them would be a awesome and would offer a new facet to EWAR that currently is bland and one dimensional. I do like the idea of specialized equipment/weapons to take out drones with

I have wanted a PvE system to fight drones since Uprising 1.0. I would like to see this fleshed out with two primary game modes: survival and extermination.
Survival Mode wrote:
- Minimum three merc squad required
- Time limit: None
- Rewards: SP + ISK (increases the more drones that are destroyed)
Survival mode pits the squad against waves of drones that increase in size and difficulty. Every 4 - 6 waves a boss wave event occurs that ramps up the difficulty. Successfully completing the boss waves awards bonus ISK. You may only die once before being eliminated, but you can be needled back to life.
Extermination Mode wrote:
- Minimum four merc squad required
- Time Limit: 15 - 30 minutes
- Rewards:SP + ISK (flat payout if mission is a success) + Chance for salvage
Extermination mode drops the squad into an infested drone hive. Mercs must search and destroy drones and their nests. Lower difficulty missions may only have the mercs destroying 10 - 20 drones within the time frame. Higher difficulties may have them fighting more drones, immobile drone gun placements, nests that can repair near-by drones, drones with EWAR, and a variety of other obstacles. A CRU is dropped at the entrance to the mission so mercs can die multiple times in this mode.

Maybe automatic combat drones would keep certain people from using aimbots.
That'd be a win-win scenario if I've ever seen one.

Accessory drones like what you are describing could occupy your equipment slots and have a whole tree of skills devoted to them. I would like to see a super-light variety of drone that fires at whatever you are aiming at, but only when you move within the drone's optimal range. They make circles around your merc a la electrons around an atom until they need to fire.
They would not have a high amount of HP, but they are small targets and moving relatively quickly so killing one isn't easy. They also won't be no-scoping badasses like the turrets currently in Dust 514. I'm thinking their initial weaponry will match the rifle weaponry used by each race (e.g Amarr drones would have a scrambler rifle, Caldari a rail rifle, and so on).

I'm thinking their initial weaponry will match the rifle weaponry used by each race (e.g Amarr drones would have a scrambler rifle, Caldari a rail rifle, and so on).
Drones would be their own skill tree entirely with three main branches like you said,
- Logistics Drone Operation
- Operation range - Maximum hit points - Maximum nanites - [Specialization skill here]
- Combat Drone Operation
- Operation range - Maximum hit points - Maximum ammo - [Specialization skill here]
- E-WAR Drone Operation
- Operation range - Maximum hit points - EWAR range increase - [Specialization skill here]
Logistics drones (repairs & revival and resupply) would be the most durable drone of the lot but has no weaponry. Would have nanite clusters that can be replesnished from supply depots. Basically mobile nanohives and triage stations.
Combat drones would be armed with racial rifle like you said and it would engage targets at racial optimal but only targets that the "host" has spotted or if "host" takes damage. Damage for Pro drone would be that of a ADV rifle for example, would have ammunition and reload times, ammo can be resupplied with nanohives, supply depots or resupply drone. (Sentry variant with longer range but lower damage output and lower health would also be in this tree.) [Link]
E-WAR drones could offer dampening fields, increase precision, jam hostile radar, cause fake red dots on radar, increase sensor strength (counter jamming?) or act as a scout camera drone. These would be the weakest drones health wise and would have no weaponry. (Webber drones would most likely fall into this category as well)
All drones would require equipment slots and bandwidth and once deployed the drone cannot be retrieved.
Drones could open up a interesting squad leader / specialist suit with multiple equipment slots, bonus to drones (bandwidth, durability, max ammo/nanites and max operation range for example) and sidearms (only weapon in the suit) but would have fairly weak defenses and limited high and low slots.

PVE is all nice ad dandy, but wheres the risk?
Though PVE can offer risks, one thing that the player has to be allways on the lookout in EVE is being attacked while doing PVE. Doing PVR dosent isolate the player from PVP, its not suposed to be a safe heaven.
PVE sites should be inserted in such mechanic that that makes this scenario possible. Let it be only a few insert / extraction points from where players can come and go. And make it possible to other payers to get into the instance to PVE or to chase and kill PVE's.
Bottom line is, PVP should not be safe.
And yeah, I like the idea of wild life / drones appearing from nowhere in a match, it adds a layer of tactics and danger. |

Turn friendly fire on, make it where the ISK payout is divided by the number of mercs in the squad. That is how I imagine a legitimate mercenary contract would work anyway.
Merc 1, "Hmmm... it's just me and merc 2 left... and the ISK payout basically doubles if he's dead..."
*Aims at merc 2's exposed back.*
Merc 2, "Hey man, I need that nanohive whenever..."
*turns around*

I imagine exploration and mission sites to be PvPvE zones ("no man's land") so you never know if you are going to run into another player nor would you know if he's friend or foe (proximity chat would be amazing in this scenario).
I like your idea about insert / extraction points. Insertion could be anywhere on the map with orbital deployment and after mission parameters (kill X drones, hack the drone mainframe, retrieve artifacts / data pad / Quafe recipe and so forth) are done you'd get a notification on where your extraction point is (so it's not a static point on that map that's camped 24/7).
And Ripley Riley's idea sounds awesome, missions are easier to do as a squad but the payout is also split between the squad.

It also opens up chances to AWOX people in corp squads and what not.
Well it depends if contracts will be public / anyone can join or if you will be able to join with your team mates.
At least in EVE, one would be mad to go rat with outside alliance people. The risk usually comes from outside. So, well, I dont see the situation above hapening often. |

Yeah I can see it working if its an open area with higher player count. But if the maps are like today, with a limitation of players, there maybe a way to corps exploit the system, like occupying all slots thus locking the place out.
