As Jadek and Topher have implied, this discussion has been had before:
https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=138736
Not to be a jerk though, it is a discussion we need to have, just saying if anyone is super hardcore about it, there's 15 pages of solid discussion right there. :)
Having read through most of that myself, most of my favorites are ones that have already been mentioned here: Effigy Nephilim Einherjar
And as far as I'm concerned, I will always consider "Bunny" an affectionate term for us. Even if some EVE players have used it as a derogative, I've far more often heard it in affectionate or neutral-casual uses. Plus it's cute. <3
One thing I'd like to place a negative vote on is "Legionaries", "Legionary", or any of variants. Not specific to the game/universe/narrative enough, and in my own, dumb opinion it just doesn't sound cool enough.

A capsuleer is the pilot of a starship. We're just clone soldiers. If it's factional warfare we're soldiers. If it's other PVP we're pirates, mercenaries, etc. Ground troops don't get special names. There's nothing special about the nature of what we're doing in general. You want a name for what you do? Specialize into piracy and then your a pirate, etc. |

Most soldiers, boots on the ground guys, are not 'us.' Just like most pirates, soldiers, miners in EVE are not Capsuleers. Regardless of what "that guy's" profession is, he still needs a name as we can't just call him "that guy." At the moment, we are just "that guy."

Alpha 443-6732 wrote:why not legionnaires Doesn't explain what we are that well. Anyone in a Legion, such as the Amarrian Legion, could be considered a Legionnaire. It also is not super iconic and doesn't stand out. "In DUST 514 you play as a Legionnaire" doesn't pop out as "there is clearly something different." "In EVE you play as a Capsuleer" immediately makes it clear that there is something different. That's just my opinion is all.

Which is why I think Legionnaire is not a great term. It doesn't set itself outside the realms of our reality very well.

That being true-ish, Capsuleers are categorized by what they live in. We live in our suits.
Maybe go the route of what form we take, like Bio or Biomasses. We are more organic than in-organic, unlike the capsuleers, they are minor biomass in compared with the ships they use.
"1500 Biomasses assaulted the production facility today." "1500 Bio Units assaulted the production facility today."
Maybe an acronym is warranted. BUs or BMUs. As the without them, they sorta fail the roll off the tongue test above.
Still think Suits is the best so far.

It's simple.
We just find a derogatory name for them....
What do we know about capsuleers?
1) They are stuck in a sterile field because of fear for contamination, ergo they are stuck in their ship or in their Captains Quarters.
2) They travel in little eggs that fit inside larger ships.
3) They show no signs of physical expertise or prowess.
4) We don't even know if they know how to shoot a gun, or which end shoots the gun... But they do know how to operate turrets.
I wanna call'em Eggheads. Or Eggs. What's a word for someone who is frail and cannot connect with the outside world for fear of germs from a skid on a knee?
Eggers is the word that you are looking for, and it's commonly used in Eve already. |

Mercenaries? That is a job, not what we are. For example, a Capsuleer is a Capsuleer regardless if they are a miner, a pirate, or a soldier in the Federation. What ever we are, simply calling us Mercenaries doesn't work as groups like Mordu's Legion are by a large normal humans despite being mercenaries themselves.

Eve pilots are called Capsuleers because they utilise a capsule to transfer bodies, right? (Apologies if I'm wrong) What do we use (Neural implants?), can we make a name out of it?

just Call it EVE and make it 1 game, whats the point in having it all broken up, ok so its a good idea to have the abilitys to go on and off world, fly as a Valkyrie in and around massive space battles, then purge the land and seas in epic planetary battles but surely all this will still be as awesome in 1 game. and much more preferable. you could pull up in you destroyer then, go exploring on the planet in your dropship, or just jump from place to place battling people in factional wars, it would be up to you and would be seriously awesome.

We went through the same naming debacle 15 months back when we created our Corp. It was so hard to find something that was in between too cheesy and too try-hard.
Legionnaire is the most logical term and I think that will stick as a reference to a player of EVE: Legion. It kind of makes me think of Captain Planet's 'Planeteers' which is lame.
I suppose Capsuleer and Legionnaire are on the same level, and have a nice ring together don't they? I find I refer to my Dust players as Troops, and my EVE players as Pilots to be honest.
And then there is Private Shaleen in his entirely separate category :), the man is a beast.
