The DUST Bunny thing is cute but if it is going to be EVE: Legion, how about a name that is actually cool and CCP recognizes as a name? Capsuleers is iconic and reading a CONCORD message about "A war between 5,000 Capsuleers" doesn't some ridiculous. Imagine hearing "Caldari Prime tension increases as Bunnies attack Mordu's Legion." No, that bird won't hunt. Wait...
So how about a real, cool name? Legionnaires is too long and really is not iconic. The Valkyrie, the Capsuleers, those are guys you gotta worry about; Legionnaires doesn't scream "we are better than the average soldier." By the lore, a Squad of 6 of 'us' are capable of burning through an entire platoon of basic soldiers. We "are dangerous beyond compare." So what does CCP call us? Anyone can be a mercenary but few can be 'us.'

CCP Logibro wrote:Just want to add, Empyrean basically refers to all of the various groups that use cloning technology, so that includes us, Capsuleers and Valkyries.
As for the rest, keep it coming /popcorn My posts sometimes bring all the devs to the yahd...
Anyway, I am not a fan of Legionnaires. It is not unique to 'us.' The Real World has Legionnaires; be they in the French Foreign Legion, part of a non-profit organization in the USA, or even a type of pneumonia. It is not tied to the world of New Eden. Capsuleer is entirely a New Eden thing: the little red line that Firefox puts under it clearly proves it. It is a term that is used to describe them perfectly. If I say "Capsuleer" to someone that I am explaining EVE to, they can immediately understand just how different the universe is that such a term would/could exist. The Valkyrie (pilots) in Valkyrie are obviously based on real world mythology. However, it is a term used to describe who they are. People choose the best pilots out there, steal them, and turn them into Clone Pilots like what happened with R+ín. It does have some real world connection but quite little in the end.
Legionnaires is really quite ubiquitous. I think we should go with something that doesn't connect 'us' to the real world. I like "Immortals" because of the final line of the trailer but New Eden kind of has a surplus of people that 'live' forever so the name doesn't make them unique. Immortal does. However, because of CCP's love for their viking heritage, I propose:
Einherjar These were great heroes that fell on the battlefield in honor and were brought to Valhalla by the Valkyrie to prepare for Ragnarok. The More Sand in the Box keynote already let slip that "Valhalla (tm)" was going to be something. This is something that does have some connection to the Real World but if I am talking to my friend and trying to get them to try out Legion, if I say "We are the Einherjar" not only will I get massive nerd credit for knowing how to pronounce it thanks to listening to it repeated for hours but they will know "ah, this is something in the game's universe."

Sarducar Kahn wrote:I have often used the term Mercs, this is still applicable, accurate and short. That is a profession, not what you are though. Mordu's Legion are all (well, since Templar 1 they are expanding) all normal humans mercs. Would be like calling a Capsuleer miner just a miner. Being 'us' is not so much a job. I mean, I don't think there would be much use for humans that are 10 times stronger and tougher than normal people at a data entry job and the "I come back when I die thing" is only helpful in a profession akin to throwing your body into a meat grinder until it stops turning but we are still far far different than the average human.
Calling us, the players right now, mercs would work as we are soldiers of fortune but there are plenty of "whatever the hell we are called" that are permanent soldiers in the respective armies of the four races. Remember that CCP Eterne will be doing news letters about New Eden. A letter like "Kaalkiota sends 10,000 mercs to attack a planetary outpost believed to be the hiding place of Tibus Heth" doesn't tell you what kind of mercs or change KK with Gallente Federation where they have volunteer career soldiers. I think calling a Gallente Federation immortal soldier a mercenary would be of the highest insult. But, then again, **** the Gallente.

Jadek Menaheim wrote:As I said before, I support the idea of Nephilim, Suits, SOMS.... and of course Legion. Nephilim is so overdone though. Suits could work but doesn't mean much as anyone can wear a dropsuit but not everyone is in a Replicant body. SOMS? Suited Operation Mercenaries? If that M is mercenary, would there be a different name for full time Gallente soldiers? Legion is ambiguous. "Amarr Empire sends a legion of 20,000 men to re-secure a slave revolt planet." Is that a legion of Legion soldiers or is the legion just made up of soldiers?

Aye, DUST bunny was something that everyone thought of at the same time. It is like trying to find the first group of Homo erectus to use fire.

ShalaShasta 666 wrote:Immortals Problem with Immortals, despite my high opinion of it, is that Capsuleers and Valkyrie are also the same kind of immortal. Hell, anyone in New Eden wealthy enough to afford clone technology is effectively immortal save for Stage 3 Derj's Disease. It is just a different kind of immortal.

zzZaXxx wrote:A capsuleer is the pilot of a starship. We're just clone soldiers. If it's factional warfare we're soldiers. If it's other PVP we're pirates, mercenaries, etc. Ground troops don't get special names. There's nothing special about the nature of what we're doing in general. You want a name for what you do? Specialize into piracy and then your a pirate, etc. A Capsuleer who works for the Federation as a soldier is still a Capsuleer though, same if they are a pirate.
Most soldiers, boots on the ground guys, are not 'us.' Just like most pirates, soldiers, miners in EVE are not Capsuleers. Regardless of what "that guy's" profession is, he still needs a name as we can't just call him "that guy." At the moment, we are just "that guy."

Alpha 443-6732 wrote:why not legionnaires Doesn't explain what we are that well. Anyone in a Legion, such as the Amarrian Legion, could be considered a Legionnaire. It also is not super iconic and doesn't stand out. "In DUST 514 you play as a Legionnaire" doesn't pop out as "there is clearly something different." "In EVE you play as a Capsuleer" immediately makes it clear that there is something different. That's just my opinion is all.
Shadowswipe wrote:Suits.
It is classy and will never go out of style. It is what we use on the battlefield. We are professional killers. We dress to impress at all times. We wear the Suit.
(Amarr suits even have coattails)
"Today, 1 million Suits stormed the battlefield on both sides." You can wear a dropsuit without being one of 'us' though.
Surt gods end wrote:Every time I think of the name legion, I think of the "french foreign legion" And it comes off just as intimidating as that name. lol
Which is why I think Legionnaire is not a great term. It doesn't set itself outside the realms of our reality very well.

Mercenaries? That is a job, not what we are. For example, a Capsuleer is a Capsuleer regardless if they are a miner, a pirate, or a soldier in the Federation. What ever we are, simply calling us Mercenaries doesn't work as groups like Mordu's Legion are by a large normal humans despite being mercenaries themselves.
