I understand that you guys have done extra work to the unreal 3 engine. Why not use the unreal 4 and add more to it? Why use an engine that is out dated? I understand where you guys are coming from in order for dust to prevail. And I am sure you guys have thought about it. Can you (CCP) enlighten us? I just want the best for legion now that it's out there.
Edit: I did read that the Unreal 4 engine makes it easier to port on a console rather than the unreal 3. Something to think about CCP.

Because they've basically completely rebuilt the engine from scratch - completely new lighting system, Nvidia PhysX built in etc.
Source:
CCP Android wrote:We are running on a heavily modified UE3 engine. Heavily modified means that we have taken almost all parts of it and extended or changed them. Take our lighting for example, we have completely moved to fully dynamic lighting that supports bounce lighting. Take a look at a presentation one of our programmers did a few years ago on our lighting. The presentation is a little old, but the key concepts are still the same. http://advances.realtimerendering.com/s2012/CCP/Malan-Dust_514_GI_reflections(Siggraph2012).pptxThis technology has been in active development since then and is getting very advanced (IGÇÖll see if I can get CCP Photon to do a devblog on the current state of it and where we intend to take since it) We are also using a few very impressive middleware technologies. That means that we get code from companies that are experts in a certain technology and integrate it into our game. The NVIDIA PhysX middleware is a good example. It contains things like advanced particles, advanced physics and GǪ yes destruction. So the reason we are not doing destruction right now is not that our engine does not support it, but rather its not our focus right now. What engine is chosen at the beginning of development should be thought of more as a starting point for a game rather than a box that the game is developed in. |

My guess it is what they are already familiar with. Lets not forget, an engine can become heavily modified. Halflife's engine is built off of the original Quake engine.

Work on the UE3 engine cannot be directly ported over, all of the modifications would have to be redone again.

CCP said Legion will use UE4 at fanfest.. has something changed?
Or are you talking about Dust on the PS3? That would be because UE4 doesn't have a PS3 port.
I was thinking of the Valkyrie keynote. |

They already have a ton of work on UE3, so throwing that away seems beyond stupid.
What's so amazeballs about UE4 anyway?
(Well-made) Games look just as good on UE3 as they honestly need to.
It works well enough (provided CCP has some competent individuals now that can optimize a game), so they could, in theory keep a majority of the core gameplay of DUST and do a major fix and bughunt on it and smash out a alpha rather quick I could imagine. (Don't hurt me, I'm a consumer)
Because you wanted to be something you're not.

Have you ever looked at one of your skill books and realized that the difference you gain training up from level 4 to level 5 is just not worth the time and effort? Yeah, that's why. Especially after CCP already said that they heavily modified UE3 to the point that it's probably not gonna be that different from the UE4.

Ever play Killing Floor (By Tripwire Interactive)? It uses the Unreal 2 engine! Still works a charm, looks damn fine too!

The original Witcher was made using Biowares Aurora Engine, which was originally built for Neverwinter Nights. http://witcher.wikia.com/wiki/Aurora_Engine
Engines can be heavily modified beyond recognition. My only worry is that they have to spend resources making what they might have gotten for free with UE4. But of what I have seen (in replies), I think they know what they are doing. |

Unreal 3 is heavily modded, but Unreal 4 is standard. Unreal 4 already has good cross-platform support. Using something that is widely used reduces development effort in the long run. In the short term the modded Unreal 3 may have features that Unreal 4 doesn't.
I personally favor the Source engine over Unreal though. |
