Same reason why people quit World of Warcraft during the 18 months of Dragon Soul when Blizzard willingly admitted "nothing new until expansion." MMO games continue to work because of advancement. If DUST was as good or competent as a Call of Duty game in regards to shooting mechanics, I doubt people would so obviously leave.
Another might be fear. "My progression won't transfer over so why bother?" It is nihilism. "Nothing I do matters so why bother?" that comes forth from "this game is dead."
Finally, anger. I have to disagree with you about unrealistic expectations. When a company makes a game, says it is going to have all these things Soon (tm), and then goes and creates a new game that is going to have all the things that was promised in our current game, I do not see as believing what CCP was saying as "unrealistic expectations." If DUST was what it currently was and CCP never said things like "10 year development", "player market", or "real, meaningful connection to EVE" than the death of the game would not sting as hard.
DUST is dying but the idea of DUST is going to find a new home. That transition process is our current concern.

So it is as I've said all along. YOU chose to come onto CCP's website and buy into their bullshit, when you could've just taken the product at face value the way it is represented on the PSN store when you download it.
Because if people did not "buy into their bullshit" they would likely not even be here. I would imagine to guess that most people are/were playing DUST based on what it could become rather than what it was; it would actually be an interesting poll to take.
Regardless, is your contention with the community because they believed a company now that those statements are not coming true in the terms of PS3? That would be like saying "well, you trusted Bernie Madoff so it is your fault." Or, put much more closely to what is actually happening and not pure hyperbole, "Buyer Beware."
