Sony won't let CCP carry over any info to Legion.
CCP decides to force the issue by gambling their reputation that would be hurt anyway upon the Legion announcement no matter when it was given.
By CCP causing a PR fiasco it would most certainly trickle over to Sony (as it has done).
Thus allowing for "talks" to take place and easier leverage to get the ability to give players their characters et al in Legion.
Certainly plausible and not unheard of for a business. Also, likely if Sony was holding back for legal reasons or maybe to hold on to DUST as an IP through the services they own because CCP wanted to abrupltly end it and move on. Remember Valkyrie hangs in the balance.
So the Fanfest announcememt was sort of a counterf*ck to Sony's f*ck.
What do you think?

Legal reasons. Which most likely is the reason. The service is over PSN. The accounts are Sony's. There may not have been any resistence from Sony. Then again maybe their was. The two companies still have a deal for Valkyrie.
I can see Sony wanting to leverage keeping DUST in development as a product they would continue to benefit from. Not allowing character transfer to Legion would be key in that. CCP knew that would be the biggest concern by players that would want to continue over to Legion.
If there wasn't going to be a problem then why wasn't the character transfer already part of the announcement? Why then did they have to have talks with Sony after the announcement and Sony getting bombarded with refund demands?

I'm also beginning to think that this a bigger part of the overall scenario than has been realized.
Logibro's comments in some of the other threads about how exactly Legion has come about are rather revealing. Unlike Valkyrie, which initially was a Dev side/spare time project, Legion has actually thus far been created as a main project using the production resources slated for supporting and developing DUST. Without actually having the internal authority ("the green light") to do so. Which would mean since October basically, support resources allocated by CCP executives to follow through on the commitments made to Sony regarding product development were usurped at that development level to design and create a product which would NOT go to Sony or the Sony customer base. This explains not only why all FanFest runup materials term items and events as being DUST 514 instead of Mystery Legion or something else AND explains why we, here on the ground in DUST 514 have been living in crazy-bug-imbalance-see-saw-ville for months with very little done to address it. The devs groups have been working on Legion when they were supposed to have working on DUST. Marketing doesn't know, accounting doesn't know, Hilmar probably didn't know. And we sure as **** didn't know.
Now the legal part of this is where it could get real interesting. CCP of course has every right to create what they want, for who they want. UNLESS they are in a contract where doing so is a conflict. Sony has the Exclusive Distribution rights to DUST514, and it sounds like maybe Valkyrie too. Production rights, duplication rights and distribution rights are all different aspects of total copyright. Selling or leasing them is where the $$ is in creative property. And the case law is long and well established regarding conflicts of interest. Depending on how the terms are written, CCP's development cabal may have just exposed CCP to serious legal action from SONY since what's coming out is that the resources obligated to be available to support the product SONY has been distributing instead were used to develop a COMPETING PRODUCT, thus hampering Sony's ability to be profitable in distributing, since they've been basically given a willfully and knowingly defective product to distribute in the first place. If it turns out that what I'm seeing is even remotely close to the truth, there may be some heads rolling at CCP real soon. Sony has a looooong history in media distribution, especially in their BMG side. A cease and desist order for something like this is probably a mad-lib form just waiting to be signed and dated. There's NO doubt in my mind that ALL charge-backs happening ultimately will come out of CCPs pocket, and very little doubt that if Sony feels slighted or shortchanged in this in ANY way it WILL not only affect the future distribution prospects of Legion but Valkyrie too. CCP will be in a position to create the greatest video games the world has ever seen and SONY will be in a position to guarantee NOBODY EVER sees them.

Considering you character info is stored on CCP servers, your PSN account is effectively a pass through, CCP already have all tje information required for transfering characters.
Your email, address and your Characters name, Pair this with no exclusivity contract, no legal partnership or anythingmof the sort.
CCP like they have done so many times before didn't know /didn't care about the reaction. Of which it is most likely the latter, if you didn't know that telling someone the game they had been helping develop and wanted to play was being given to someone on a different platform, which you are not part of, would cause an uproar. Well for the love of god don't programme an AI.

Well said. Exactly!
This would be like how Microsoft didn't even want to go in on the deal. Sony must have also had some important caveats to DUST being on CCP's server and yet being piped through Sony's service that can benefit Sony.
Do you think Sony would want to lose those accounts if only because they can promote the subscription rate and also keep players plugged into their system vs. a competitor?
This is not unlike the comic book industry where DC and Marvel held creative rights on any characters created there.
Also, not unlike how if you come into work and create something on company time it can be legally claimed by the company. It isn't yours if you used company time to do it.
Also also, remember Prince? He changed his name to a symbol due to legal rights issues with his record label.
It is plausible that this was a media stunt meant to avoid a nasty divorce.

PIs/SPIs are stored in Playstation Network. Your Dust514 account is stored in CCPs databases along with your PSN ID. CCPs infrastructure is interfaced with PSStore via this ID. That's it.
So all your account data, virtual goods and achievements are already with CCP, always were. What would Sony object to?

What do you think? FAILED! There is NO CONTRACT what so ever between CCP and Sony. This is from the CEO of CCP games. To lazy to look for article link. What also was stated in that interview "dust 514 was not a good game". Let's face it, dust 514 has an average of 3k players at any given time. That is NO WHERE near enough players to be profitable. This ship is sinking FAST! NOTHING can save Dust or Legion. There are TONS of PC games I would play before ever touching another CCP game. July, I will be gone and all I can say is ashes to ashes. Ill stick with a company that sticks with its players. |
