Lol. Nothing as b ad as this fiasco but, at least before we had a statue to shoot.
Several things happened at once.
An internal letter from Hilmar was made public that included the possibility of EVE moving to microtransactions. Also, Hilmar was quoted as saying (paraphrasing) "We wait to see what players do, not what they say".
This coincided with the release of Incarna that included the NEX microtransaction store. In it you could purchase for display only clothing items with this new currency called Aurum. Among these was a monocle that cost $60 real money in Aurum.
Also, the CQ was introduced as the beginning of the whole walking in stations concept. It was bloated, fried people's motherboards and was required when you logged on rather than as a choice to leave your ship and enter into it.
Furthermore, it smacked of CCP hype (actual over hyping didn't help either) and led people to criticize that large amounts of time and resources had been spent only to get to just a CQ station space vs. walking in the rest of the station when that time could have been better spent fixing problems that EVE still had and people had been wanting to get fixed.
Also, what was the point of vanity items or being in a station if you couldn't interact with others and actually go into the rest of the station?
Also, we found out that se EVEers were being used, by way of the walking in stations mechanic, as beta testers for World of Darkness and DUST. Sound familiar?
So, after five years of hyping the notion of walking in stations and going theough two rebrandings to finally become Incarna, all we got was a buggy, bloated romp around a small room, a useless Aurum store, the threat of microtrans, a letter that sounded awfully callous, that we EVEers were just test fodder for another game and bugs et al still in EVE.

Unless you want to
Excuse me. EVE costs a monthly fee and they got people like me to sign back up and hang on several months with the hype (the renewal emails they send out) that Incarna as envisioned was about to happen with the next couple of updates. The extent of which was a poor excuse for a badly coded motel room and they began the process of milking money from players with Aurum.
The only thing different is that EVE would remain on the PC.

Monkey MAC wrote:Incarna was an EvE expansion released about 2 years ago now. When it was revealed they promised that EvE players would be able to walk around the Space Stations they stopped off in.
They would be able to socialise in pubs and clubs, push their wares in vibrant markets and AWOX to their hearts content in steam filled back alleys and 'private venues'.
Instead they were given the Captain's Quarters, which was the exact same as the merc quarters we are confined to, in addition upon its release CCP announced that the focus of EvE would be shifitng towards a free-to-play model with microtransactions. Kinda like how DUST is.
The EvE players were outraged, a riot was organised, in game. EvE pilots took their ships (expensive ones at that) to high security space, once their they opened fire upon a rather busy space station by the name of Jita. Of course since they were in high sec CONCORD intervened with Cruise Missiles, not that this stopped the pilots. Infact they 'rioted' for so long they actually eliminated the stations shields, (quite a feat considering jita is invincible).
CCP saw this and listened to EvE players and between the players and the devs shaped EvE into what it is today. Its a bastion of CCPs, community centric ethos that they enjoy mentioning at every opportunity and rightly so.
However EvE players have got nothing on those of the DUST playerbase. First of all the game was changing it's goals, not its platform. In addition the Jita Riots show the freedom a real MMO playerbase has, they held a riot for crying out loud. By comparison what can DUST do? The only in-game protest I can think of is a 'sit-in' across molden heath.
But considering that, that was done as a way of locking districts, its hardly riotous behaviour. Hence why so many people have just quit like myself or biomassed completely, we have no other way of expressing our dissatisfaction.
We aren't happy that they intend to move Legion to PC-only. Personally I think Legion looks Amazing, but I want to enjoy it on my platform, on the console I was told I would be able to. That's all.
Correction, you could shoot at the statue all you wanted to and a conga line was formed orbiting it. Also, see my post above about money, time and support invested.

I agree that is angering, and I don't know how much that would have cost, but even that is nothing compared to those who not only spent money on the game and possibly the PS3 just for the game, but spent money on air fare and lodging to go to FF and be publicly humiliated is a whole other ball game.
Oh yeah, the Fanfest thing was a b*tch move. Still that is its on thing apart from the actual game and affects a small portion of the community.
Lol, at anybody that bought a PS3 while this thing was still in beta.if only they knew how CCP worked. The hype machine they run. I almost bought a PS3 just for DUST and thought better. I still only went with a playstation this past year for other things apart from DUST, namely Skylanders for the kids.

My apologies, I wasn't their, this was a relayed account I was told a while ago. But my point still stands about the DUST side of things, I mean unless you want to try a sit-in with DNS.
Lol, no problems.
Sadly however, I WAS THERE

Hyborean Strain wrote: The biggest part about the Jita protests was that it happened in systems that were crucial to the Eve economy. It paralyzed that entire part of the game, forcing people who weren't in the know to get involved too. The effect spread throughout the game and caused large disruptions in both game functions, but also server load. So there was that. But also the thread totaling the number of people unsubscribing reached about 5,000 accts before it was locked. The actual number was probably much higher. But on those 5k alone, CCP was losing $75,000 a month in subscription revenue. THAT is what got their attention. Guess which two things we can't really do?
A great example of why a company like CCP would want to move to microtrans and away from subscriptions in the first place. What a paradox eh? The player base proved the microtrans idea to be valid by their very actions sadly.
