If Project Legion becomes something more than a prototype, we will not leave our DUST 514 players behind. You would be able to bring your character name, applicable skills/inventory, and other elements of progression with you. We are still working on the details and we will have more to announce soon.
"If"? "IF"?! The fact that you began your sentence with "If" instead of "When" tells me a lot.
It tells me that the future of Legion is still very much in flux. Financially, developmentally and logistically you are not CERTAIN that you can deliver Legion as anything more than a tech demo at this year's fanfest.
It tells me that you've abandoned development of a game which actually exists, has seen full release and has players, LOYAL PAYING PLAYERS (albeit small-ish numbers of them), in the HOPE that you can crank out a larger cash cow.
It also tells me that everything you have to say about character data persistence across the two games is worth precisely nothing as of this moment. It's good that you're considering it, but did you honestly not realize that this needed to be something you could GUARANTEE ON ANNOUNCEMENT DAY? Really?
Regardless, the other game is still an "If", therefore anything even tangentially related to said game is an "If" as well.
You don't get credit for "If". You get credit for "When". You get bonus points for "Here it is, right now".
Now I don't begrudge you reaching for larger returns, at all. CCP is a company, companies exist to make money. But you people need to take a few night classes in business administration at your local community college. A few correspondence courses in public relations also couldn't hurt, just sayin'!
You don't take the cow that is currently producing milk, even at a trickle, behind the woodshed to meet Mr. Winchester before her replacement is grown and gravid. And when it IS time to meet Mr. Winchester, you TAKE HER BEHIND THE WOODSHED! You don't splatter her grey matter all over her calves. It has an unsettling effect on the herd.
CCP Rouge wrote: 2) Are you completely abandoning DUST dev?
No. Without promising too much, we are actively working on stuff like balancing, Planetary Conquest, matchmaking, the in-game economy, and more. And of course we continue to work with the CPM to identify ways to improve the game.
So... bugfixes and balance updates. That's all you've committed to right there.
No, wait!
*rereads*
You didn't even do THAT! You couldn't even commit to MAINTENANCE development, because that would be "promising too much".
What you HAVE actually committed to, I surmise by the omission of its mention, is the cessation of all further expansion development. No new features, items, game modes or mechanics. No actual content.
DUST 514 is dead in the water. You'll try and plug holes in the boat. If you can. Sometimes. No promises.
But asking for an oar or sails seems to be out of the question.
CCP Rouge wrote: 3) Is Project Legion going to have a PS4 version? Or something for consoles?
It is still far too early to discuss platform expansion, as like you saw we are still only working on the PC prototype at this time. But the PC architecture gives us the opportunity to grow once we have a great PC product at hand. For now, though, PlayStation 4 is not something we are working on.
Of course it's too early, we covered this in the section starting with "If".
This is the one item I'm not going to give you any grief about whatsoever. Because If there's ONE THING CCP needs to stop doing, it's writing checks that can't be cashed.
I applaud the complete and utter lack of hype-up or stringing people along here, and the absence of grandiose promises you very well might not be able to deliver on. So, kudos for making progress and collectively growing as people.
CCP Rouge wrote: 4) When are you going to give us more concrete information on Legion?
Again, Project Legion is still in an early stage of development but the whole idea behind giving a sneak peek at Fanfest is to get early feedback - and I really want to keep this discussion going, show you progress through dev blogs and such and listen to what you have to say.
Please post your feedback and questions in this thread - and let's keep this conversation going. The team and I will be reading this thread, and I will respond as soon as I can.
CCP Rouge
Here's my feedback: Legion looks very nice. I am sure the people that play Legion ("if" it sees release) will be very impressed with it.
Now here's my challenge to you, CCP Rouge and the rest of you at CCP.
Tell me: why would I want to play Legion?
After your gross mishandling of DUST 514 in general, and this Legion reveal debacle particularly, why would I want to have anything to do with CCP or its games in future?
What guarantee do I have that in, let's say three years time, I won't be hearing about how "laser focused" you are on Legion's development?
What guarantee do I have that after its release, all the cool features and ideas the Legion devs are telling me is in the pipe and on its way won't be co-opted by your next game, never to see release in Legion?
What guarantee do I have that Legion won't be bound and gagged, have its legs silently cut from under it and then left to bleed out slowly, while the money and time and feedback I THOUGHT I spent fueling Legion's growth and evolution are surreptitiously used to fund development of CCP's next pet project; Legion 514: Return of the Dust Valkyries?
Well? Tell me.
