A real pro would not waist time attacking a game for virtual currency. This post was as much to warn wannabes that what i described in the OP is a crime and can carry serious consequences as it was to help any victims. Honestly, I would feel far worse for a dumb kid who did this and got caught than I would for a CEO who was loose with his/her personal information and lost some virtual currency. The game is a game, a criminal record is real.

If anything, the CEO is in violation for sharing his account info as well. Sony and CCP could easily just ban both people and wash their hands of it. What they actually do though, is up to them and your wall of text means nothing.
Finally, let me clearly say that I don't think this is 'metagaming' at all. This is 100% over the line but is not illegal.
That's like saying it isn't breaking & entering if all you do is delete someone's Final Fantasy savegames while you're in.
No.

Even if the guy had been silly enough to say hand over his password it would still have been illegal if he had not given his permission to access his PSN account.
Hope the guy also put in a ticket to CCP and sorted out the security issues with Sony. So essentially, what we are saying is that if I setup a honeypot PSN and roleplay an oversharing nerd with sad brains and my infos get 'fished,' I can put a dude in prison? Okay. Now we're really metagaming here!
lets put it another way. You tell someone where you live and thoughtlessly leave your keys on your chair. Do you think it is illegal if the person then proceeds to use your key to enter your house without permission.
Or how about when cops set up a sting car, leave the door unlocked, and a mobile phone on display. Do you think taking taking the phone or the car is legal just because the car door was unlocked.
Generally granting "permission" can be the difference between legal and illegal.
As to the matter of going to jail it is probably unlikely unless you have been doing it a lot or committing other offences. However, just because it might be considered a relatively minor crime doesn't make it any less a crime.
PS. I was never the one to raise the issue of jail only that gaining access to a PSN account without permission particularly for your express benefit is still a crime.
You do not have to be crazy to play here but we are willing to train you.

Meta game is within the game. The PSN account is out of the game so therefore is not meta game.
WTF is meta game anyway. It just sounds like an excuse to act like a total ****. Answered your own question. It also is often used by CCP to wash their hands of many things, regardless of relevancy. Sort of a intellectual property version of signed paper waivers. Works good for support tickets/petitions, may lose steam if someone brings the local laws into play.
Virtual Crime generally gets a free pass but cyber bullying does not. Good luck trying to find any lines.

Neither of these issues are similar to what you said happened at all. Both of the above examples include property being stolen. In your OP, the only violation is of account sharing or at worse, fishing for account info. The above will lead to prosecution, your OP scenario is extremely shaky since no money or property was actually taken.
All that will happen is Sony/CCP will shut down accounts. |

Didnt some guy successfully sue an ex of his for deleting his save games when they broke up

I think I see your error. I am not the OP so the original post and premiss were not mine. However, please note that even accessing someones account without permission can be a criminal act regardless of whether they took something e.g. phishing for your Amazon or Itunes account or even worse your bank account and then proceeding to change the password so that you can access these accounts but the account holder can not.
