Interesting article. Many devs jumping ship. Wow.

If they continue down the same path they are now I could see it. They just took a huge loss this year and World of Darkness failed. Dust may as well be a complete failure because it failed to live up to its potential. While I do not have numbers to back it up as they are likely closely held internally, i'm willing to bet this game is running in the red.
Though honestly, I'm not too worried at this point. 3 years is a good chunk of change to turn things around. If in another year Dust gets cancelled and they report another major loss THEN I would start to jump up and down waving the red flag.
They really do need to step up their game with Dust though. Unless they just plan on stringing us along and milking us for all we are worth before dumping the game. -Le Sigh- |

Saying 'in three years they could lose everything' is prettymuch a non-statement as that's prettymuch the bare minimum for a business to tank completely (unless something ****s up completely). Yeah, if they have three bad years where they actually lose money *and assets* without getting significant return (or expected future returns) they might not be here, but with the stuff they have on the table it's unlikely and as the article itself said - requires some big tinfoil hattery.

The odds of CCP collapsing in three years are pretty low.
Who knows, maybe five-ten, but they've got a pretty dedicated playerbase; I doubt somehow that everyone will just up and cancel their subscriptions.
After all, look at us...
A year into this monstrosity that is DUST, and there's no end in sight.

Companies with bad management that also don-¦t listen to their customer-¦s demands usually go under... This is not breaking news.
I kind of expect CCP to present a change in mindset at FanFest 2014. They cant continue to do stuff ass-backwards for ever, right?

Where's the other Spreadsheet Spaceship competition? CCP can shoot themselves in the foot over and over again but anything short of catastrophic they'll make due. There will always be those whom want the style of gaming fix New Eden offers.

The team on that site is almost as notoriously bad as 'Dusters' news. Also anytime someone says that CCP and Dust itself is going to fail you generally do not listen to them.

And apple will totally fail if Steve Jobs should ever die. Oh wait!
Companies lose people all the time. Attitudes change, dreams get fulfilled or dashed. New directions irritate, excite or bore those already in place. So they leave. Or decide that the constant push is too much at long last. Their family is actually more important and children do grow up very quickly, wait too long and miss them becoming adults.
The article was biased, as most are, because the author wants to see the EVE they know not change. Sorry, everything changes. The only constant is change.
Take off your tin foil hat. The loss of a $20M game venture is a bother, but frankly has nothing to do with Dust514. Dust is F2P (arguably but that is for a different post) and one might hope that the sale of AUR will be enough to keep their very inexpensive development solution moving forward. Recall that they used UE3.5, most industry insiders believed it was because the older engine was Dirt Cheap at the time. Shanghai is also not the most expensive place to find developers. Just sayin.
Welcome to Dust.
And so it goes.

My issue with these type of things is people forget that ccp made profit in 09, 10, 11, and 12, enough to offset the 21m loss. And the loss was for tax reasons mostly.
CCP changed course with eve in 2011, people are now freaking because there is no 'Jesus feature' in the expansion. And that is because they have a lot of stuff to finish and fix. People whine that dust is dead, but i just don;t see it. That's the thing, we really do not know how much dust made and how much it cost to develop. And if the roumer mill is correct, there is a huge change coming, that could change a lot of peoples minds, but who knows. I'm just a 10 year eve vet so meh |

let us attempt this with numbers
Here is the amount of players playing Dust 514
at the time of this post STEAM had 5,730 players at peak playing COD: Ghosts ( not the most popular either
this sounds very close to Dust 514 BUT
COD is on multiple rigs (PS3 PS4 XBONE XB360 and PC) oh yea forgot the WIi u
5,730 is the lowest number for COD
Today Dust 514 had 4,215 players on at peak currently as i write this there are 2,923 players on Dust 514 and 18,500 playing EVE Dust is on one rig only PS3

Maybe so, but the young and uninformed first needs to be educated before any meaningful discussion can take place.
As it is now, I seriously doubt that the author behind the article being linked to and most people reading this thread are adequately informed and educated in matters of the stock exchange and global market economics to form any coherent or meaningful arguments on the matter at hand. |

How much does it take to run Dust?
How much profit is CCP making from AUR and Pack sales on PSN?
Is it within budget? Note that a loss might well be withing budget. In particular if they are increasing EVE play count/income because Dust is reaching a new fan base for them.
That is how that math should be done. Don't base it on a completely different company, in a completely different country based on business decisions that you still don't know anything about.
And so it goes.

Himiko you obviously don't understand the basic nature of technology much less the underpinnings. Instead of political ranting your time would be better served learning the fundamentals of science. Pick any of them, biology/genetics from its origins from farmers simply applying it to a monk formalizing it, mechanics becoming defined during the renaissance is another good one.
