The SSD will do a lot. It's not really a "mod" persay, as it's supported by Sony in terms of instructions even being provided by Sony on how to upgrade your hard drive.
In pub matches, if I decide I want to spawn a vehicle, I am always the first in the queue. I've noticed I rarely have many people spawned by the time I get in now. Honestly, I only really did it to load the game back up faster after the game crashes or I disconnect in Planetary Conquest. But I've also found the game is more stable on an SSD, and less crashes seem to happen as well.
I like to check the player list at the start of matches these days, since there's no war barge time, so I rarely end up pressing much advantage from the SSD on the field, personally.

The SSD gets you in about 3-5 secs earlie I hear, but iv only every used an SSD so got nothing to compare to.
Iv personally noticed having a better intern connection (fiber over ADSL) gets you in sooner too.
AND for the guy several posts above me lag switched do not work in DUST, everything that counts is calculated server side. The only lag you receive is that of your own connection to the server.

Having a SSD in your PS3 ensures that you will load quicker than people with HDDs. Since you load quicker you have the chance to spawn in quicker --- which leads to being able to quickly get your Maddy in in ambushes, often this allows you to rush the enemies before they have a chance to call in their own vehicles.
Oh, fun times on my vehicle alt.

Long time no see!
Basically, from what I understand, the SSD increases only he loading times at the start of matches, giving you a few seconds of grace to get the jump on the enemy; time for a free hack etc.
Although the PS3 is incapable of exploiting the SSD, and I've heard that simply installing a 7200rpm HDD as opposed to the 5400 that is default will increase your speeds just as much, and probably be a lot cheaper .

The Playstation 3 has a SATA I port. the cap out speeds for that port is 150mb/s.
The Average PLaystation hard drive runs at like 5600 RPM and has speeds of 74mb/s... Half of what it is capable of.
When you upgrade your Hard drive to something with read speeds of 150mb/s you essentially double that number.
SSD's can read well over 500mb/s caping out even the PS4's Sata 2 port.
Anything that gets you closer to your Sata port cap will improve game loading times, and in many cases the game performance its self. |

Just an FYI for the thread, the PS3 uses a sata 150 connection for the hard drive. So do ntot go and splurdge on an insanely fast SSD, just something with good seek/write/read speeds. The actual data transfer speeds are an issue really.

Go cheap, basically. I went with a Kingston SSDNow V300. The 120 GB version is $75. You can get the 60 GB version for $50 if you don't need a ton of space.

Even the developers of Final Fantasy A Realm Reborn.. Have admitted a SSD improves the ps3 significantly in alot of area's. He then had to take it back later because it voids the PS3 warranty.. Just making sure that part is known.
But yes in almost every game you play having double the hard drive speeds improves alot. From GTA's massive load times and rendering.. To Skyrim.... To FF.. to DUST.

Lag switches work in any game that has a network accessed for multi-player.
The trick is simple yet seems to have passed many by because the Myth is that they only work on the host during LAN parties. Probably because that was where they were initially used/discovered.
The lag switch simply needs to drop a few packets, just enough for CCP servers to miss a hit packet but not so many as to lose the connection. Since their servers lag all the time that number should be in the 250ms (1/4 second) to 500ms range. Fine tuning would no doubt be necessary.
CCP servers has slow ping times, 200ms works fine for EVE but it definitely is too slow for Dust. My normal ping time to Dust servers is ~160ms. Plus or minus several ms. Good ping times to real FPS games are < 50ms, ideally closer to 35ms. Frame display delays on PC games are noticeable when they drop below 30FPS (frame per second in most cases).
Recall that the average response time is that same 1/4 second. The younger one is the faster the response. Experimenting would establish a proper solution but this is a F2P game so it hardly seems worth the effort.
From the standpoint of any network solution dropped packets are a harsh reality. They must be planned for and adapted to. Simply resending the packet is actually built into the network itself in various forms.
I have watched Lag Switches in action in Dust. They are not as prevalent as they had been but many of those Mercs no longer play Dust at all. Good and bad news basically. Glad they and their lag switches are gone but fewer players is not the best solution.
One last thing, if CCP/Shanghai would have coded a proper solution then modded controllers would never have been a problem in the beginning. Firing X many rounds per second (1 more than their ROF) and the weapon jams. No destruction of a specific weapon was actually needed. They Nerf Hammer everything sooner or later so this is just me nit picking.
Welcome to Dust.
And so it goes.

I run an SSD on an old PS3. It loads faster and loads textures faster. That is only advantage provided. Although as noted previously if you access the player lists you will lose that advantage.
I play with a variety of friends and one has the newer PS3 that only has 12GB of storage. I don't know what it is but one could add a drive to it. However, the friend hadn't yet he was very quick coming into the game. Most likely because of the same advantage the SSD provides.
Recall that Sony encrypts the heck out of everything to keep them thieving gamers from stealing their most important IP. God knows the PS3 UI is super secret. What that means for your question is much of the data is on the drive but is encrypted. If it is then it needs to be decrypted and that will slow up the system when it has to load the textures, decrypt them and install them in the game video ram.
If you have a SSD laying about. Give it a try. But don't spend much cash on it. Although my system does crash less since the change.
Good Luck.
And so it goes.

Since i have playstation plus and download games, i have a 500 gb hdd with 7200 rpm. The cost/benifit ratio for a high capacity ssd is not worth it to me. Most games have little tweaks you can do, you can turn down the graphics to a lower res and itll take less time to render things but then you wont see some things so clearly.
If you dont download gamesanddont take much space you might as well go for the ssd upgrade. |

if you buy an SSD for dust you spend money without any benefits.
PS3 uses the old SATA I port, a high density hybrid drive will saturate the SATA I port fully and be on par with the SSD and the hybrid drives onboard controller will fully control & take care of the flash rom thus it wont tear it out. not to mention that you save money.
the SSD will on the other hand sooner or later tear out due to the lack of support from the hardware and the OS. after a few months it will be even slower than the hybrid drive.

I've truncated most of the rest of your wrongness for brevity.
Lag switches don't work in DUST. Lag switches only work on games where the match is hosted on one of the players' machines, like Call of Duty often is. The host goes to the lowest latency player, who then flips the lag switch so that the game is running on their machine, but everyone accesses it slower.
Since DUST matches run off of central servers, the only person a lag switcher hurts in DUST... is himself.
