Armor plates and Shield Extenders currently have a downside as well as a HP increase. Shield Extenders currently increase the shield depleted recharge delay and Armor Plates reduce speed. As far as I am aware these downsides stack without any penalty. I am suggesting that the current stacking penalty that is applied to most percentage based modules be applied to the downsides of Armor Plates and Shield Extenders but inverted and added before applying it.
For example, the Complex Armor Plate has a 5% decrease to speed. Adding three of them would give a multiplicative penalty of approx 14.26% speed penalty if my maths is correct. Using the stacking penalty for three modules and inverting the effect gives instead a penalty of 19.52%, a noticeable difference.
Obviously this is based on the assumption that there is currently no stacking penalty applying to the plates and extenders but as far as I know there is not.
This suggestion would still allow brick tanking for both shield and armor but would have more noticeable effects on the dropsuits due to the increased downsides.
For those interested in the maths I used the stacking penalty formula from http://wiki.dust514.info/index.php?title=Stacking_Penalties. For three modules the calculation is as follows: X*(1/(0.5^(((1-1) / 2.22292081) ^2))) + X*(1/(0.5^(((2-1) / 2.22292081) ^2))) + X*(1/(0.5^(((3-1) / 2.22292081) ^2))) X is the module penalty of 0.05 (5%). The three sections of the calculation are the three separate modules. |

This is a pretty neat idea, definitely worth considering. As far as i can tell, this would only apply to armor plates and shield extenders. Any other applications? I don't think any other modules in the game apply drawbacks with bonuses. Correct me if I am wrong. |

Those were specifically the ones I was thinking of but you could apply the same principle to Shield Energizers and Reactive Plates, which also have downsides (max shields decreased and speed penalty). I feel this is a more elegant solution than adding a new mechanic to discourage brick tanking and emphasizes the usage of other modules whilst still allowing brick fits for those willing to suffer the penalties. |
