I found my cloaked scout counter: A wired headset that mixes game and chat sound into the headset (surround sound). I can now hear scout footsteps as they try and sneak up on me.
This works as long as other squad members are not with me, although if I'm with people they quickly take revenge for me.
(There are some wireless headsets that do this too, typically via a usb adapter that takes AV input)
I've been testing cloak and shotgun with a Militia light suit and Militia shotgun (w/ CPU mods), and I have to say it's fairly easy to sneak up behind someone and 1-2 shot them. The key is picking off people who are alone. All it takes is to see someone and then go around an obstacle the other direction to get to their back. If I can do this with Militia gear and a basic cloak, I'm sure it's far easier with Advanced/Proto.
Unfortunately the cloak is perfect the way it is. The shotgun is perfect the way it is. The two by themselves are perfectly balanced. The problem is the combination, and the fact that the combination is heavily abused. And it gets more ridiculous with 2+ cloaked shut-gunners, which happens a lot. You may think you got killed by a single shot-gunner, but it may be that you were being attacked by multiple - you only see who got the last shot off that killed you.
The cloak is very well used for anti-tanking. It is one of the best tank counters there are. Nerfing the cloak in any way would make it less effective in this regard. Nerfing the shotgun would just make it useless for non-cloakers.
I hate to say it, but as much as I am frustrated by cloaked shot-gunners, I'd rather deal with it then loose out on the positive benefits.
(And no, I haven't, nor will I ever, spec into a cloaked shotgunner) |

Why: if they shot you in the back the cloak didn't weigh much in that fight......
The reason why cloakers can easily sneak up behind people is because of the bonus to profile dampening. They can sneak up on you without it appearing on their radar. It's annoying for sure, but if you're with people they should be able to attack the scout right after they kill you. Most cloakers attack when you're alone, which is why I have the headset :P. |
