I found my cloaked scout counter: A wired headset that mixes game and chat sound into the headset (surround sound). I can now hear scout footsteps as they try and sneak up on me.
This works as long as other squad members are not with me, although if I'm with people they quickly take revenge for me.
(There are some wireless headsets that do this too, typically via a usb adapter that takes AV input)
I've been testing cloak and shotgun with a Militia light suit and Militia shotgun (w/ CPU mods), and I have to say it's fairly easy to sneak up behind someone and 1-2 shot them. The key is picking off people who are alone. All it takes is to see someone and then go around an obstacle the other direction to get to their back. If I can do this with Militia gear and a basic cloak, I'm sure it's far easier with Advanced/Proto.
Unfortunately the cloak is perfect the way it is. The shotgun is perfect the way it is. The two by themselves are perfectly balanced. The problem is the combination, and the fact that the combination is heavily abused. And it gets more ridiculous with 2+ cloaked shut-gunners, which happens a lot. You may think you got killed by a single shot-gunner, but it may be that you were being attacked by multiple - you only see who got the last shot off that killed you.
The cloak is very well used for anti-tanking. It is one of the best tank counters there are. Nerfing the cloak in any way would make it less effective in this regard. Nerfing the shotgun would just make it useless for non-cloakers.
I hate to say it, but as much as I am frustrated by cloaked shot-gunners, I'd rather deal with it then loose out on the positive benefits.
(And no, I haven't, nor will I ever, spec into a cloaked shotgunner) |

My only problem with the cloaked shotty as is would be the 'decloak and fire' problem we have at the moment, for those complaints about being shot in the back by scouts I've got nothing but facepalms.
Why: if they shot you in the back the cloak didn't weigh much in that fight......

If CCP added a slight delay between decloak and firing it would solve the problem. But knowing them they will nerf cloaks, nerf shotguns and make it so scouts can only have pillow fights.

The reason why cloakers can easily sneak up behind people is because of the bonus to profile dampening. They can sneak up on you without it appearing on their radar. It's annoying for sure, but if you're with people they should be able to attack the scout right after they kill you. Most cloakers attack when you're alone, which is why I have the headset :P. |

The shotgun is a borderline underpowered. If there was no cloak, only the most skilled shotgunners could die less than 4 times a game. There wouldn't be a single suit in the game that couldn't counter it. It still makes a great sidearm for my SMG scout.

Hurray for sound hax! I too use my head set for various advantages. Listening for tanks, identifying enemy weapons, differentiating between forges or rails in my ADS, etc.
As for the cloak issue, I think if the decloak sound was amplified tenfold it would be balanced. This would make it that if a scout attacks a group, even spread out a bit, he'd be noticed by everyone and maybe be able to get one kill, but then killed by the responders. Also, instantly removing the cloak automatically decloaks you (there seems to be a slight delay).

To be honest I rarely have problems with cloaked shot gunners. I have way more problems with heavies not that this is a huge problem but in certain maps heavies can get really annoying...
The average cloaked scout is rather easy to counter and the ones that are hard to counter won't really need the cloak to be effective its just a nice addition.
IMHO the cloak SG combo is not even OP its viable the SG has been in a bad place before 1.8 now with the cloak its more viable and therefore more used. (but that the cloak is needed to make the SG a viable weapon speaks for it self on how bad the SG really is).
The question I ask my self all the time is why is it ok for assaults, tankers and heavies to get 30 kills or more per game but not for scouts?
Currently scouts do exactly what they are supposed to do they harass and seed fear among the enemy.... |
