While setting calendar dates on when you can unlock your new toys may work in EVE, we have to remember that Dust is an FPS on a console of which the majority of users have the attention span of a wet noodle. Potentially new players are simply frightened away by full proto stomp squads and are just too impatient to wait months before they can actually work for their first shiny black suit.
Dust 514 has two things going for it: -Emphasis on teamwork -Tier based skill trees Currently, the balance of this game leans so heavily towards how much SP you have that new players with half a brain are quick to learn that they will simply never be on par with their friends who have been playing for longer. We have to keep in mind that this is an FPS, a genre who's target audience want to kill their foes with gun game and user skill that sets them apart from others.
In short: -I am a 36,000,000 SP player -I would not mind going against a proto player if his user skill was less than mine -I know my squad has the tactics and coordination to take down any unorganized team regardless of their SP, skill or gear -I would willingly pay for two years worth of 1-month omega boosters if there were no weekly cap (instead I cut CCP's profit by running 3-day actives until I cap on Friday)
New player experience is currently a bad joke, new players simply do have the means to be able to compete in this kind of environment unless they play for a year. CCP needs to either remove the weekly skill cap altogether, or allow new players to grind without a cap until their first 20,000,000 SP (a competitive level) and discount their boosters for that time being. Progression up the skill tree within an micro-transaction based FPS should be based off of hours in-game, not age of your character. I want to see this game become popular, but it is just not attractive enough to engage its own target audience so long as players are told they have to wait a week before they can start progressing again. |

I really like this idea it would give new players to reach a point in the game where they can compete and not have to wait months to be at their friends level if they have enough time to grind out they sp. It would also allow people to widen the gap between them and the new guys Again, your gear and SP are only half the battle in this game, user skill and superior tactics (something that takes months to acquire in any FPS) are the other half. But you math'd wrong, once you hit your 20 mil SP mark then you begin earning SP just as slowly as the rest of us. |
