a training corp like Dust University would help a lot. running solo is ok once you know what youre doing but as a new player it really helps to run in a squad.
being "good" at dust has a lot to do with your choice of fittings and knowing how to use them. every fit has a niche with one or two always being more over powered and capable of blurring the line of what that fit's role is actually supposed to be. right now its a scout suit with a cloak and shotgun as I'm sure youre aware.
regardless of your choice of fit there are a few... realities in dust you must accept, knowing these things will begin to help your game.
1. don't be Rambo.... you cant be a one man army here, it doesn't work, the game is a team based fps, while there are roles for the solo player and you can be successful at it, a good squad will always accomplish more and dominate the battlefield far better than a good solo player
2.get to know your fit and optimize it asap....know the effective range of your weapon of choice, and how it handles, know how resistant your suit is and its recharge rates on shield and armor, get use to how quick or slow you move etc. once you find a good fit that compliments your play style get every skill pertaining to it to 5.
3. you're gonna die a lot.... even if youre awesome at this game youre going to die at least a couple times most battles. the average player dies about 5 or 6 times in a balanced fight and in a stomp 10 - 20 times unless they give up and hide in the mcc.
4.a good corp is a must to have a good time....this is a very social game, and the people you play with can make the difference between whether youre having fun even when youre losing or just getting more frustrated and bitter to the point you feel the game actually doesn't want you to play it.
5. just when your getting comfortable with your play style and the mechanics of the game ccp will change everything and make you feel like a noob all over again for the next build....this more than anything else, they will break what worked, fix what was broke and introduce a new flavor of the month that dominates the battle field and make you regret the way you spent your sp...but stick with your build, don't lament, being good at what you do will make for a better experience over all than trying to keep up with the latest OP fit.
6. DONT BUY ANYTHING THAT COST AURUM.... ccp has been known to change and/or remove items you bought with real money at their whim, and none of it gives you a worthwhile advantage on the battle field with a slight exception to boosters, but if you refer to 5 you can see that in the end even your sp isn't safe from the nerf bat when they make what you spent it on useless.
hope this helps a bit and good luck.
this game makes me sad....
