This wouldn't effect their layout in anyway but +1 sidearm slot.
They would have 1 light and 2 sidearm.
The weapons would cycle through with the weapon swap button.
Assaults are always QQing about versatility and this could create it.

No. Bad idea is bad.
There are better ways to 'fix' Assaults other than giving them more weapons. I.e. give them more worthwhile bonuses, better slot layout, or more PG / CPU.

That is a lot of extra PG/CPU wasted on a second sidearm. It is pointless as hell. Most of the time, my rail rifle is enough to kill people as is. When it doesn't, Mrs. Magsec picks up the slack. I have never thought "If only I had another one!"

The Imperial Commando ak.0 actually does have a Side-Arm slot in addition to it's two Light Weapon slots.
It's an oversight obviously, but CCP hasn't done anything to address it yet.

Be honest, how often do you use your sidearm over your main? In a firefight, you change to your sidearm if you are trading shots with another guy, or low on ammo on your main. This would do nothing really, unless you go back to pre-nerf flaylocks.
I feel the commando bonus is misplaced. Heavies are for taking more damage, Assaults should be for DEALING more damage. That plus 2% should have been assault bonus, and the PG bonus should have gone to the suit that holds 2 main weapons, the commando. Both would have benefited. The respective bonuses for assault would have looked a lot better that way. The 2% damage bonus, in conjunction with the reload speed/dispersion bonuses would have been a fair counter to heavies and tanked cloak scouts.
But no...and why didn't we get that? Because CCP Shanghai can't do what makes sense, and looking at the various numbers/stats, can't even do basic math.
The best fanfest announcement that could possibly be made is CCP fired the ENTIRE shanghai team, and Iceland is taking TOTAL control. |

Second sidearm is relatively useless for an assault, but I wouldn't mind an additional grenade slot, especially considering the reduction in grandes carried numbers.
Being able to decide between locus and flux, or always being able to carry AV would be quite versatile.

Umm we don't have enough CPU or PG to fit a suit that can compete with a scout as is and you want to give us another slot? To use it you'd have to put together the lightest fits ever. Bad idea.

Whole suit needs an upgrade not a couple CPU or pg for 1 module. Top ten worst ideas I've ever seen on the forums regarding assault suits.

So I'm using my SCR. I'm pretty good at it, so I can feel when I'm about to overheat, so I switch to my sidearm to keep damage up, empty my clip, and hit quickswitch to get back to my OP SCR.

It would cycle through them. Unless you only have a single sidearm.

They were more feared than either Scouts or Sentinels now. The extra equipment slot at the time rendered Logi's completely obsolete.
Assaults need serious tuning so they can do their role, CCP is working on it. I like these threads that throw ideas out there. This idea is great for three reasons: it gives a reason for increasing the CPU/PG, it plays off the Assault skill, and it doesn't force people in a direction thereby respecting the Sandbox mentality.

You know what. I actually really like this idea.
Commando should be about straight damage and the versatility of having two Light Weapons.
Assault should be about a never-ending hail of bullets. And a flat 25% reload speed bonus would help with that.
Caldari Assault bonus would have to be changed to something like -5% rail weapon spool-up time/level. Helps for RR, MagSec and Bolt Pistol, and honestly isn't that overpowered... good players work around the spool-up time already anyway.

Heavys are battleships not cruisers though. Heavy assault is a cruise/medium role
Sentinels are defensive like marauders. Point defense. Assaults are offense.

Crazy right? Yeah cuz that's what I want... But while we're on the subject I'd like to be able to use an hmg on my scout.. People say assaults should be weapon based but they're not give them a DMG bonus or rof bonus idk something assaults need. As it currently stands with the fotm commando or heavy RR once again showing that assault suits are not unique. Blah blah just make it so rifles work better with assaults and no a hip fire bonus doesn't count.

Having more potential HP than their corresponding racial logi would be a good start.
Scouts can max tank roughly 50% of the HP of its corresponding racial logi.
Racial assaults only get approx 200hp less than their equivalent logi.

Seriously, assaults just need to get the slot and stat adjustment they should have gotten alongside scouts and heavies. When that happens, everything will be fine.
And then the bricktanking > ALL problem can be fixed too.

My assault is powerful as it is. Just needs the systems and slot adjustment CCP mentioned they couldn't rework for 1.8
After that has been implemented then see about adjusting it further if needed. But as I said, doing very well already.

Yes OP it might work, but most Assaults don't use the first sidearm let alone the second. Unfortunately with the resources available in this build we don't really have anything for the Assault to specalise in.
At least not that fits CCP's description. In later builds where we have T3 Weapons Systems and Deployable Turrets then prehaps the Assault could be given a better role, but at this point in time, its just not really possible.
Unless your a Computer Scientist don't tell me how Game Mechanics Work.
